What Are BSP Hydraulic Fittings?

BSP hydraulic fittings are threaded connectors made to the British Standard Pipe thread system, a Whitworth-form thread with a 55° flank angle. BSP is the dominant pipe thread standard outside North America, and it appears in two forms that are frequently confused:

  • BSPP (parallel): a straight thread designated G, made to ISO 228-1. It does not seal on the threads. Sealing comes from a bonded washer, an O-ring, or a gasket compressed between the faces.
  • BSPT (tapered): a 1:16 taper thread designated R (male), Rc (female), or Rp (parallel female), made to ISO 7-1. It seals by thread interference and normally requires a thread sealant.

  1. Cut the hose square with a sharp hose cutter.
  2. Prepare the hose end per the hose maker’s instructions (skive where required, e.g. 4SH and R12).
  3. Insert the stem fully into the hose bore.
  4. Slide the ferrule over the hose end and seat it against the stem shoulder.
  5. Crimp with a hydraulic hose crimping machine to the target crimp diameter from the hose maker’s chart.
  6. Verify the crimp O.D. with a caliper and record the value.

BSP connection-side rules:

  • BSPP: fit a bonded washer or O-ring seal, tighten the nut, and never apply thread sealant to the parallel threads.
  • BSPT: apply a compatible thread sealant or tape to the male taper; the seal comes from thread interference.
  • A BSPT male may thread into a BSPP female, but add sealant; a BSPP male must never be forced into a tapered port.
  • Never mix BSP with NPT: the 55° and 60° flank angles are incompatible and will gall or leak.

Can NPT and BSP threads be mixed? No. NPT is a 60° American tapered thread; BSP is a 55° British thread (parallel or tapered). They are not interchangeable, and mixing them causes galling, leaks, or thread damage.
