What Is a JIC Female Fitting for R5 Hose?

A JIC female fitting is the counterpart of the JIC male: instead of an external cone, it carries a female UNF thread and an internal 74° cone seat. The 74° figure is the included angle of the cone, with each flank 37° from the axis, which is why JIC fittings are also called JIC 37 degree flare fittings. When a male JIC 37° flare stud is tightened into the seat, the two cone faces contact metal-to-metal and the joint seals without O-rings, washers, or sealant. Sizes from -20 to -32 carry the (R5)W designation: at these larger diameters the nut collar incorporates a retaining wire ring that holds the assembly together and keeps the nut aligned during installation on heavy hose. Keep the W in the part number when ordering the large sizes; it is part of the order code.

Crimping an R5 hose fitting follows the same discipline as any JIC crimp fittings job: the crimp parameters decide everything, so never start without the data sheet.

1. Corta la manguera en ángulo recto: use a hose cutter, never a hacksaw or an angle grinder. Textile hose frays easily, so a clean cut is even more important than on wire hose.
2. Marca la profundidad de inserción: read the insert depth for your hose series from the crimp data sheet and mark the line on the hose cover.
3. Lubricar e introducir: apply a thin film of assembly lubricant to the stem and the hose bore, then push the fitting into the hose until the mark meets the ferrule.
4. Engarzar y comprobar: select the die per the crimp table, crimp in one continuous stroke, then measure the crimp outside diameter with a caliper and compare with the tolerance.

Connecting the JIC Female End

Clean the internal 74° cone seat and the mating male 37° flare stud with a lint-free cloth. On the (R5)W sizes, confirm the retaining wire ring sits correctly in the nut collar before assembly. Thread the male stud into the female end by hand until the cone faces touch, then tighten to the torque listed for the thread size, holding S1 or S2 with a second wrench as access requires. JIC 37 degree flare fittings seal by cone contact alone, which is why both cone faces must stay clean and dry. Do not apply sealant to the cone faces.
