The 1B-WD adapter is a BSP male to BSP male hydraulic adapter that combines a double use stud end with a captive seal on the opposite end. The stud end seals either on a 60 degree cone seat or on a flat face with a bonded seal washer. The second end carries a retained captive seal, so the sealing washer stays on the adapter during fitting and cannot be dropped or omitted. Threads are BSPP, also called G thread, to ISO 228-1. HENGHUA supplies the series in carbon steel with zinc plating, in 304 and 316 stainless steel, and in brass.

1. What a 1B-WD Adapter Does

The adapter joins two BSPP connections on the same centre line. What separates it from a plain double use adapter is the captive seal arrangement: the F end is machined to accept a retaining seal, and the matching washer is held in a groove or lip so it travels with the part. In service this removes the most common cause of leakage on that joint, which is a washer that has been left out, fitted the wrong way round or reused after being flattened.

The double use stud end at the E side works in two ways. Where the port is machined with a 60 degree internal cone, the mating nipple seals on the cone. Where the port presents a flat annular face, a bonded seal washer seals on that face. Both methods use the same part number, so a maintenance store needs one line item for either port design.

2. Specifications

2.1 Connection 1

Connection 1 is the double use BSP male stud end.

  • Thread form: BSPP (G thread) to ISO 228-1, parallel, 55 degree thread form, stated as size and threads per inch, for example G1/2″X14.
  • Port end geometry: 60 degree internal cone seat combined with a flat face for a bonded seal washer.
  • Sealing options: 60 degree cone seat or bonded seal washer on the flat face.
  • Sizes in the series: G1/4″X19 through G1.1/4″X11.

2.2 Connection 2

Connection 2 is the BSP male end with the captive seal.

  • Thread form: BSPP (G thread) to ISO 228-1, parallel.
  • Sealing method: captive seal washer retained on the adapter, designated in the chart by the WD code for the size, for example WD-B08 for G1/2″X14.
  • Captive seal material: NBR, FKM or EPDM, selected to the order.
  • Configuration: straight, both connections on one axis.

2.3 Construction and Materials

  • Carbon steel body with zinc plating as standard.
  • Trivalent chromium zinc (Cr3+) plating and zinc-nickel plating as available options.
  • 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel for corrosive and marine duty.
  • Brass bodies where a non-ferrous part is required.
  • Captive seal washers in NBR, FKM or EPDM.
  • All sealing faces and the captive seal groove are machined to the drawing.

2.4 Pressure and Temperature

Working pressure depends on the size, the wall thickness of the body and the sealing method, so it is not quoted as one figure for the series. HENGHUA engineering confirms the working pressure for each ordered size and seal combination on the order.

Temperature is set by the sealing elastomer:

  • NBR: approximately -30 C to +100 C.
  • FKM: approximately -20 C to +200 C.
  • EPDM: approximately -40 C to +120 C.

The usable range of the assembly is the narrower of the metal and elastomer limits.

Chart note: E is the double use BSP male stud end and F is the BSP male captive seal end. A, B and L are lengths in millimetres as defined on the series drawing, S1 is the hex across flats, and the WD code names the captive seal washer size that fits the F end. Every 1B-WD adapter in the range is supplied to these dimensions.

3. How to Read a 1B-WD Part Number

  • 1B is the base series: BSP male double use for 60 degree seat or bonded seal.
  • WD is the suffix that marks the captive seal design.
  • The first number pair is the E thread, the double use stud end.
  • Where a second number pair appears before WD, it is the F thread, the captive seal end.
  • Two digits of the same value mean both ends take that size.

Examples:

  • 1B-08WD: E end G1/2″X14, F end G1/2″X14 with captive seal WD-B08.
  • 1B-08-12WD: E end G1/2″X14, F end G3/4″X14 with captive seal WD-B12.
  • 1B-16-20WD: E end G1″X11, F end G1.1/4″X11 with captive seal WD-B20.

4. Installation and Fitment

  1. Check that the captive seal washer is present and seated in its groove before fitting. It should not fall off when the adapter is turned upside down.
  2. Confirm the port sealing method at the E end: 60 degree cone or flat face with a bonded seal washer.
  3. Clean the threads and the sealing faces. Trapped swarf or paint on a flat face prevents the washer from sealing.
  4. Lubricate the threads lightly with a hydraulic-system-compatible compound and start each end by hand.
  5. Tighten on the hex with a wrench, never on the body or on the hose, to the torque that suits the thread size and the port material.
  6. Hold the adapter while tightening the second connection so the first joint is not disturbed.
  7. Pressurise and check both joints for weeping before the machine goes back into service.
  8. Replace the captive seal washer at the interval set for the machine, or whenever the joint is opened and the washer shows flattening or cracking.
