1. What a 1JT4-SP Adapter Does

A 1JT4-SP adapter is a one-piece elbow with a JIC 74° cone male end on one leg and a BSPT male taper thread on the other, with 45 degrees between the two legs. It connects a tube assembly terminated with a JIC 74° cone nut and sleeve to a port threaded with a BSPT taper pipe thread, and it changes the direction of the line by 45 degrees at the same time.

This JIC adapter does two jobs in one part: it makes the thread and sealing conversion, and it makes the bend. The E column is the SAE J514 JIC 74° cone end, printed in the inch style such as 9/16"X18, and the F column is the BSPT end, printed as an R thread such as R3/8"X19.

The difference between this male adapter and its straight counterpart is geometry, not sealing. Temperature is a material question and is stated here as a material fact rather than a performance claim. For NBR seals the working range is approximately -30°C to +100°C, for FKM (Viton-type) approximately -20°C to +200°C, and for EPDM approximately -40°C to +120°C. Both ends of this series are metal joints, so those ranges apply to the seals elsewhere in the circuit and to the thread sealant used at the taper end.

Nut and sleeve are ordered separately. The 1JT4-SP stud does not include them. Use nut NB200 with sleeve NB500 for metric tube and with sleeve NB300 for inch tube.

3. How to Read a 1JT4-SP Part Number

A 1JT4-SP part number has three elements: the series prefix, one or two size codes, and the SP suffix that marks the BSPT end.

4. Installation and Fitment

The two ends of a 1JT4-SP adapter are prepared by different rules. The JIC end is a cone joint, tightened until the cone seats metal-to-metal with no sealant in the cone path. The BSPT end is a taper thread joint, run in until the threads interfere, with a thread sealant suited to the fluid on the male thread. Contamination control: cap both open ends before storage, because debris carried into the cone seat or the taper thread stops the joint from bedding.

Six-step assembly

What is the difference between JIC 37° flare and ORFS, and which should I use?

A JIC 37° flare joint seals metal-to-metal on a 37° conical flare face under SAE J514. An ORFS joint seals a flat face against an elastomeric O-ring under SAE J1453. Choose the family that matches the port already on the equipment. The 1JT4-SP series is on the JIC 74° cone side of SAE J514, with a taper pipe thread at the other end.

Can NPT and BSPT be interchanged?

No. NPT is a 60° taper pipe thread under ANSI/ASME B1.20.1, and BSPT is a 55° taper pipe thread under ISO 7-1. The thread form, the angle and the pitch differ, so the two will not seal even though some sizes start by hand. The 1JT4-SP adapter is a BSPT part, so an NPT port needs a different thread family, not more sealant.
