What Are BSP Hydraulic Fittings?

BSP hydraulic fittings are threaded connectors made to the British Standard Pipe thread system, a Whitworth-form thread with a 55° flank angle. BSP is the dominant pipe thread standard outside North America, and it appears in two forms that are frequently confused:

Can NPT and BSP threads be mixed? No. NPT is a 60° American tapered thread; BSP is a 55° British thread (parallel or tapered). They are not interchangeable, and mixing them causes galling, leaks, or thread damage.

How do I confirm a BSP fitting matches my hose? Three checks: confirm the BSP size and form (G, R, or Rc) on the port, match the hose I.D. to the hose-side pairing column, and confirm the hose construction against the ferrule series table. Can a BSPT male fit a BSPP female? Yes. A tapered male threads into a parallel female and forms an interference seal; apply a compatible sealant. The reverse — a BSPP male into a tapered female — must not be attempted.

What do G and R mean on a BSP fitting? G designates a parallel BSPP thread per ISO 228-1. R designates a tapered BSPT male thread per ISO 7-1; Rc is a tapered female, and Rp is a parallel female in the ISO 7-1 system.
