A 1N adapter is a straight steel hydraulic adapter that carries a male NPT taper thread at both ends, so two pipe-threaded ports, hoses or components can be joined without changing the thread form. 1. What a 1N Adapter Does

An adapter that is one thread family away from the port it meets will either cross-thread, bottom out before the flanks engage, or weep under pressure no matter how much sealant is applied.

The sealing principle of this series is the dryseal pipe thread. Pressure tightness is made on the thread flanks as the male taper is drawn into the female taper. Unequal rows in the table, such as 1N-08-16, place a smaller NPT thread at E and a larger NPT thread at F. Both ends remain male NPT; only the size steps up.

2.3 Construction and Materials

  • Body material: carbon steel, 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel or brass, selected per order.
  • Plating: trivalent chromium zinc plating (Cr3+) or zinc-nickel plating on carbon steel bodies. Stainless steel bodies are supplied without plating.

How to read the columns:

  • PART NO. is the ordering code. A single size block, as in 1N-06, is an equal-end adapter. Two size blocks, as in 1N-06-12, mean the E end takes the first size and the F end the second.
  • E is the thread at the first end, written in catalogue notation. The letter Z marks the American tapered pipe thread, NPT. The fraction is the nominal pipe size and the number after X is the thread pitch in threads per inch, so Z3/8″X18 is a 3/8″ NPT thread with 18 threads per inch.
  • F is the thread at the second end, in the same notation. When E and F are identical the adapter is straight equal-end; when they differ the adapter steps between two pipe sizes.
  • A is the end length recorded at the E end, in millimetres.

3. How to Read a 1N Part Number

The 1N series code has three parts: the series prefix, the size code of the first end and, when the ends differ, the size code of the second end.

  • 1N is the series prefix. It identifies the straight hex-body adapter with a male NPT taper thread at both ends, as listed in this table.
  • The first size block after the prefix is the E end. The dash number is the nominal pipe size expressed in sixteenths of an inch: 02 means 2/16″ or 1/8″, 04 means 4/16″ or 1/4″, 06 means 6/16″ or 3/8″, 08 means 8/16″ or 1/2″, 12 means 12/16″ or 3/4″, 16 means 16/16″ or 1″, 20 means 1.1/4″, 24 means 1.1/2″ and 32 means 2″.

Worked example using a real row of the table. Part number 1N-06-12 decodes as follows:

  • Series: 1N, straight male NPT adapter with a hex body.
  • E end: dash 06, so a Z3/8″X18 NPT male thread, 3/8″ nominal pipe size at 18 threads per inch.
  • F end: dash 12, so a Z3/4″X14 NPT male thread, 3/4″ nominal pipe size at 14 threads per inch.

4. Installation and Fitment

An NPT joint is made by drawing a tapered male thread into a tapered female thread until the flanks lock. Tightening is therefore a feel-and-angle operation, not a flat torque figure. Bring the adapter in finger-tight, then snug it with a wrench and continue only as far as the port maker’s specification requires. Do not use the hex S1 to force a thread that is already bottoming, and never torque a 1N body by gripping the threads.

Thread preparation matters more on this series than on any flared or O-ring series, because the thread is the seal.   4. Apply the selected thread sealant to the male thread, starting one thread back from the end.
  5. Fit the adapter hand-tight, check alignment of the run, then snug the hex S1 with the correct wrench size.
  6. Pressure-test or leak-check the joint with the fluid and at a pressure agreed for the system, then re-check the thread engagement mark and the alignment of the run.

Common fitment errors and their symptoms:

  • Forcing an NPT thread into a BSPT port. The two thread forms look similar at a glance but differ in thread angle and pitch. The symptom is a thread that binds after two or three turns and then weeps along the thread.
  • Using a flared adapter where the port is NPT. The adapter will not seal at all, because no flank contact is generated and no elastomer or cone is present.
  • Reusing a joint without renewing the sealant. The symptom is a slow weep that grows with thermal cycling.
  • Over-tightening to stop a weep. The symptom is a cracked port boss or a split female thread, because the tapered threads generate very high hoop stress when forced.
  • Mixing sealant types on one joint. The symptom is inconsistent break-out torque and sealant debris in the circuit.

What is the difference between JIC 37° flare and ORFS, and which should I use? A JIC 37° flare fitting seals metal-to-metal on a conical flare face, and it is specified by SAE J514 in the SAE 37° flared family. An ORFS fitting, specified by SAE J1453, seals on a flat face against an elastomeric O-ring held in a groove. Use the family that matches the port on your equipment; the two are not interchangeable with each other and neither is a substitute for this tapered pipe-thread series.

Can NPT and BSPT be interchanged? No. NPT is an American tapered pipe thread made to ANSI/ASME B1.20.1, and BSPT is a British tapered pipe thread made to ISO 7-1. They differ in thread form and pitch, so the same nominal size will usually start by hand and then bind. A tapered BSPT male thread in an NPT female port will not reach flank contact over its full length, and the joint will weep. Use an adapter that converts between the two families instead.
