BJ Adapter – JIC Male 74° Cone to JIC Female 74° Seat Branch Tee Adapter (SAE J514)

The BJ adapter is a branch tee adapter with a JIC 74° cone male run and a JIC female 74° seat on the branch, all to SAE J514. Two tube assemblies connect on the straight run, and a third connection is taken off at right angles to the run through the female seat port.

Both ends must match their mating port exactly, because that match is the precondition for eliminating leakage at the conversion point. 1. What a BJ Adapter Does

A BJ adapter is a three-port tee with two JIC 74° cone male ends in line and a JIC female 74° seat on the perpendicular branch. It splits a line into a run and a branch, and it changes the gender at the branch so that a male cone tube end can be made straight into the tee without an extra adapter.

This JIC adapter therefore has three ports and their columns, and the two directions of the tee are read separately:

  • E is one end of the run, a JIC 74° cone male port.
  • F is the other end of the run, a JIC 74° cone male port, directly opposite E.
  • G is the branch port, a JIC female 74° seat that takes a male cone stud end.
  • A is the run length from the E end face to the branch centre, C is the same measurement from the F end face, and B is the branch length from the run centre line to the female port face.
  • S1 is the hex across flats of the body, on the run axis, and S2 is the hex across flats of the female branch collar.

Run versus branch geometry decides how the part is fitted. The run is the straight axis through E and F and it is the axis that carries the main flow. The branch is the perpendicular axis from the run centre line out to G, and it is where the flow divides. Fluid can flow either way along the run, but the branch always leaves at right angles to it.

2. BJ Specifications

2.1 Connection 1 – JIC 74° cone male run ends (E and F)

  • Thread standard and family: SAE J514, JIC 74° cone seat family, inch thread.
  • Thread size range available: 7/16″x20 to 2.1/2″x12, in the steps printed in table 2.5.
  • Gender: male adapter stud ends.
  • Sealing method: 74° external cone seating metal-to-metal on the mating 74° internal cone at both ends of the run.
  • Mating port standard: SAE J514 74° cone seat, made up with the matching nut and sleeve for each tube.
  • Columns: E is the thread of the first run port and F is the thread of the second run port, directly opposite E on the same axis; both columns print the same thread in every row.

2.2 Connection 2 – JIC female 74° seat branch end (G)

  • Thread standard and family: SAE J514, JIC 74° seat family, inch thread, in the female version of the same cone sealing principle.
  • Thread size range available: 7/16″x20 to 2.1/2″x12, matching the run ports in every printed row, printed in column G.
  • Gender: female adapter port, with the 74° seat machined into the branch collar.
  • Sealing method: a 74° internal seat that a male 74° cone stud end seats into, metal-to-metal, with the joint made up by the nut of the mating tube assembly.
  • Mating port standard: SAE J514 74° cone male stud end, made up with the matching nut and sleeve for the tube. The branch collar is held at hex S2 while that joint is tightened.

2.3 Construction and Materials

The body is machined from bar stock on CNC lathes. The run, the female branch collar, the three 74° seat forms and the threads are turned and checked so that the branch stays square to the run axis.

  • Body material: carbon steel as standard; 304 stainless steel or 316 stainless steel on request.
  • Plating and finish: trivalent chromium zinc plating (Cr3+) for carbon steel as standard; zinc-nickel plating available. Plating performance is confirmed per order rather than published as a series figure.
  • Seal material options: none in the tee itself, because all three ports are metal cone joints. Where a seal material is required in the circuit, NBR, FKM and EPDM remain the options for the mating hose and tube assemblies.
  • Seat forms: two external 74° cones on the run and one internal 74° seat in the branch collar, all machined to the SAE J514 cone form.
  • Hex features: the body hex S1, from 11 mm to 63 mm across flats, and the female branch collar hex S2, from 15 mm to 75 mm across flats, both printed row by row in table 2.5.

2.4 Pressure and Temperature

Working pressure for a BJ adapter is not set by the series code. It is governed by the thread size, the wall thickness of the body and the tube, the sealing method and the material selected, and is confirmed per order by HENGHUA engineering.

Temperature is a material question and is stated here as a material fact rather than a performance claim. For NBR seals the working range is approximately -30°C to +100°C, for FKM (Viton-type) approximately -20°C to +200°C, and for EPDM approximately -40°C to +120°C. All three ports of this tee are metal cone joints, so those ranges apply to the seals elsewhere in the circuit.

Carbon steel with zinc plating suits general hydraulic service; specify 304 or 316 stainless steel for corrosive or offshore service.

What each column means

  • N.º DA PEÇA. – the HENGHUA part number: the prefix BJ plus the size code.
  • E – the thread of the first run port, a JIC 74° cone male end, printed as diameter x threads per inch in the SAE style, for example 9/16"X18.
  • F – the thread of the second run port, opposite E on the same axis, printed in the same style.
  • G – the thread of the branch port, a JIC female 74° seat in the branch collar, printed in the same style.
  • A – the run length from the E end face to the centre of the branch, in millimetres, as marked on the series drawing.
  • B – the branch length, from the run centre line out to the face of the female port, in millimetres. It is the shortest of the three lengths in every row, because the female seat sits in a compact collar.
  • C – the run length from the F end face to the centre of the branch, in millimetres. A and C are equal in every printed row, so the run is symmetric.
  • S1 – the hex across flats of the tee body, in millimetres, used to hold the body when the two run joints are tightened.
  • S2 – the hex across flats of the female branch collar, in millimetres, used to hold the branch while the male cone end of the branch tube is made up into it.

Thread size and dash chart

Every row of this series is a single-size tee: the run and the branch print the same JIC thread, and the part number carries one size code rather than two.

Nut and sleeve are ordered separately. The BJ tee does not include them. Each of the two run ends needs its own nut and sleeve, and the branch needs the nut and sleeve of the tube that is made into the female seat. Use nut NB200 with sleeve NB500 for metric tube and with sleeve NB300 for inch tube.

3. How to Read a BJ Part Number

A BJ part number has two elements: the series prefix and one size code.

The prefix BJ identifies the geometry of this branch tee adapter: two JIC 74° cone male ends on the run and one JIC female 74° seat on the branch. Other letters in the same family mark the female end elsewhere on the body: a run tee carries the female seat in the run rather than in the branch, and other prefixes mark an NPT branch or a fully female tee.

The size code is the only variable: 04 through 32, taken from the SAE dash convention based on the nominal tube outside diameter in sixteenths of an inch. There is no second size code on this series, because the printed range is single-size only, so a stepped branch is not part of the standard range.

Worked example: BJ-08.

  • BJ – JIC 74° cone male to JIC female 74° seat branch tee.
  • 08 – the size code for a 3/4″x16 thread, printed on all three ports.
  • From the table: A is 32 mm, B is 11 mm, C is 32 mm, S1 is 19 mm and S2 is 24 mm.

A buyer ordering BJ-08 therefore receives a tee whose run takes two 3/4″x16 tube assemblies and whose branch accepts a 3/4″x16 male cone stud end. Hold the body at S1 for the two run joints and the branch collar at S2 when the branch joint is made up.

4. Installation and Fitment

The run ends of a BJ adapter are male cone joints, tightened until the cones seat metal-to-metal, and the branch is a female adapter joint, tightened until the male cone of the branch tube seats in it. All three joints are metal-to-metal, so no port takes thread tape or sealant. HENGHUA does not print a single torque figure for this hydraulic adapter, because correct tightening depends on the mating ports, the tube material and the wall thickness.

Working order: make up the two run joints first, with the body held at hex S1, then make up the branch joint with the branch collar held at hex S2. Making the branch up first leaves the body free to turn while the run nuts are tightened.

Cone seat handling: keep all three cone seats clean and free of nicks, including the internal seat in the branch collar, which is the hardest of the three to inspect. Replace the tee if a seat has been deformed by overtightening.

Contamination control: cap all three open ports before storage, because debris on a cone seat stops the joint from bedding.

Alignment: bring each tube square to its port. On the branch, a tube pulled sideways loads the female seat unevenly and the joint weeps at one side.

Reuse policy: a body with undamaged cone seats can be reused; the tube nuts and sleeves are replaced at every rebuild.

Common fitment errors and their symptoms:

  • Trying to make a male cone end into the branch without a nut and sleeve. Symptom: the branch joint cannot be tightened, because the female seat needs a nut to load the cone.
  • Using the branch collar hex to swing the run. Symptom: a loosened branch joint and a weep at the seat.
  • Overtightening the branch to stop a weep. Symptom: a deformed seat and a leak that returns at the next pressure cycle.

Six-step assembly

  1. Confirm the part number against the line list, and check that E and F are the male run ports and G is the female branch.
  2. Inspect the two external cones and the internal branch seat for nicks, corrosion and previous overtightening marks.
  3. Fit a nut and sleeve to each run tube, bring the tubes square to E and F by hand, then tighten both run joints in stages while holding the body at hex S1.
  4. Fit the nut and sleeve to the branch tube and bring its male cone square to the female seat.
  5. Hold the branch collar at hex S2 and tighten the branch joint in stages until the cone seats.
  6. Pressurise the circuit, check all three ports for weeping, and re-check tightness after the first thermal cycle.

5. Applications and Industries

Adding a branch to an existing line. Where a pressure or return line has to feed a second function, this hydraulic adapter splits the flow without a separate manifold port, and the female branch lets a male cone tube end be made straight in.

Cross-reference here is organised by standard and sealing method, never by brand: two fittings interchange only if standard, thread size, seat angle, seal type and geometry all match.

A BJ adapter is a JIC adapter with two SAE J514 74° cone male ends on the run and a JIC female 74° seat on the branch. It does not interchange with a tee whose branch is a male cone end, because the branch gender differs, and it does not interchange with a JIC 37° flare fitting, which seals on a 37° conical flare face. It also does not interchange with an ORFS fitting, which seals a flat face against an O-ring under SAE J1453.

To identify the correct replacement, measure four things.

  1. Thread at all three ports. This series prints the same thread on E, F and G, so measure one port and confirm the other two match. A 3/4″ end measures about 19.1 mm outside diameter with 16 threads per inch, which reads as a size 08 port.
  2. Gender at the branch. Look into the branch port: an internal 74° seat confirms this series, while a male cone end on the branch means a different member of the tee family.
  3. Run and branch dimensions. Measure A and C from each run end face to the branch centre line, and B from the run centre line to the branch face. A short B against a longer A and C is the signature of the female branch collar.
  4. Sealing surfaces. All three ports should be metal cone forms with no O-ring groove and no taper thread, which confirms a JIC 74° joint at every port.

Where the branch has to be a different thread family, or where all three ports have to be male, the correct part is a different member of the tee family, so check the sealing method and the gender before ordering another JIC adapter. Record the measurements with the part number and HENGHUA can match the replacement.

8. FAQ

What is the difference between JIC 37° flare and ORFS, and which should I use?

A JIC 37° flare joint seals metal-to-metal on a 37° conical flare face under SAE J514. An ORFS joint seals a flat face against an elastomeric O-ring under SAE J1453. Choose the family that matches the port already on the equipment. The BJ adapter is on the JIC 74° cone side of SAE J514 at all three ports.

Can NPT and BSPT be interchanged?

No. NPT is a 60° taper pipe thread under ANSI/ASME B1.20.1, and BSPT is a 55° taper pipe thread under ISO 7-1. The thread form, the angle and the pitch differ, so the two will not seal even though some sizes start by hand. No port of this tee is a pipe thread; all three are straight-thread JIC cone joints.

How do I identify the correct BJ adapter size?

Measure the thread outside diameter and the threads per inch at any one port, because all three ports of a printed row carry the same thread, then read across the E, F and G columns of table 2.5. Confirm the row by checking that the branch port is a female seat and that the A, B and C dimensions match the space available.
