1T9-SP 90 Degree Elbow BSPT Male Adapter – BSPT Male 1T9-SP Adapter for Taper Thread Ports

1. What a 1T9-SP Adapter Does
The 1T9-SP adapter is a 90° elbow hydraulic adapter with a BSPT male taper thread on both ends. It joins two ISO 7-1 taper threaded ports and turns the fluid path through a right angle, so a hose, tube or sub-assembly can leave a manifold, block or pump body in a direction the port itself cannot provide.
The core value of this part is fit accuracy at both ends. Each end has to match its mating port in thread form, thread size and taper, because an exact thread match is the precondition for a leak-free conversion point. A correctly machined fitting threads in by hand and then tightens progressively as the taper engages.
Sealing on this series follows ISO 7-1, the standard for pipe threads where the pressure-tight joint is made on the threads. The taper drives the crests of the external thread into the flanks of the internal thread, so the metal-to-metal contact along the flanks is what holds the fluid. Because the seal forms on the flanks and not on a cone seat or a flat face washer, a thread sealant or PTFE tape is required, and the joint must be tightened enough to seat without being tightened so far that the port is expanded or split.

2.1 Connection 1 – BSPT male taper thread (end E)
- Thread family: British Standard Pipe taper thread, ISO 7-1.
- Designation: R external taper thread, for example R1/4″X19.
- Gender: male.
- Sizes available on end E: R1/8″X28, R1/4″X19, R3/8″X19, R1/2″X14, R3/4″X14, R1″X11, R1-1/4″X11, R1-1/2″X11, R2″X11.
- Sealing method: thread flank interference with a thread sealant or PTFE tape applied to the male taper thread.
- Mating port: an internal taper thread to ISO 7-1, designated Rc (or Rp where a parallel internal thread is specified against a taper male end).
2.2 Connection 2 – BSPT male taper thread (end F)
- Thread family: British Standard Pipe taper thread, ISO 7-1.
- Designation: R external taper thread, for example R1/2″X14.
- Gender: male.
- Sizes available on end F: R1/8″X28, R1/4″X19, R3/8″X19, R1/2″X14, R3/4″X14, R1″X11, R1-1/4″X11, R1-1/2″X11, R2″X11.
- Sealing method: thread flank interference with a thread sealant or PTFE tape applied to the male taper thread.
- Mating port: an internal taper thread to ISO 7-1, designated Rc (or Rp), positioned on the second axis at 90° to end E.
Because both ends are BSPT male, this series is a male-to-male elbow. It is the correct choice when two taper threaded ports have to be bridged at a right angle without an intermediate hose assembly.
2.3 Construction and Materials
- Bodies are machined from bar stock on CNC lathes, then the taper thread is cut and checked with thread gauges before the part moves to finishing.
- Body material options: carbon steel, 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, with brass available on request.
- Plating options: trivalent chromium zinc plating (Cr3+) or zinc-nickel plating. Carbon steel with zinc plating is the standard choice for general hydraulic service; 304 and 316 stainless steel suit corrosive and offshore environments.
- This series carries no elastomer seal. The pressure-tight joint is made on the taper thread, so the sealant or tape selected by the installer is part of the sealing system.
- The hex across flats S1 is machined on the body to allow the elbow to be tightened with a spanner on both legs.
2.4 Pressure and Temperature
Working pressure for these sizes is confirmed per order by HENGHUA engineering, based on the sealing method, thread size and material selected. A single figure cannot be published for the whole range, because the pressure capability of a taper threaded joint is governed by the thread size, the wall thickness of the body and of the mating port, and the quality of the thread engagement.
Temperature behaviour follows the body material and the thread sealant or tape in use. Carbon steel with zinc plating is suitable for general hydraulic service, while 304 and 316 stainless steel are selected for corrosive environments. Where an elastomer is present on a related BSP series in this catalogue, the material ranges are approximately -30°C to +100°C for NBR, -20°C to +200°C for FKM and -40°C to +120°C for EPDM; these are material facts for the seals supplied across the range and are quoted here so you can align a seal choice with the fluid in your circuit.

Column notes: PART NO. is the ordering code for the complete elbow. E and F are the thread designations of the two male ends, where E is the first end listed and F the second. A and B are the two leg dimensions of the elbow as drawn on this page, in millimetres. S1 is the hex across flats, in millimetres, used for tightening. Confirm the exact measurement scheme against the outline drawing before you design around these figures.
3. How to Read a 1T9-SP Part Number
The code has three parts. 1T9 is the series identifier, the SP suffix marks the taper thread (ISO 7-1) version of the series rather than the parallel thread version, and the digits between them carry the size.
1– male British Standard Pipe adapter family.T– taper thread, ISO 7-1 (BSPT).9– 90° elbow configuration.SP– BSPT variant of the series, with R external taper threads.
Two digit size codes use the standard British pipe sizes: 02 = 1/8″, 04 = 1/4″, 06 = 3/8″, 08 = 1/2″, 12 = 3/4″, 16 = 1″, 20 = 1-1/4″, 24 = 1-1/2″, 32 = 2″.
Where a code carries two size numbers, the first number is end E and the second is end F. Worked example: 1T9-04-06SP is a 90° elbow with R1/4″X19 on end E and R3/8″X19 on end F, leg dimensions A 26.5 mm and B 28.5 mm, and a 16 mm hex across flats. Reading the code correctly is the whole of the ordering exercise, because the reduced end changes both the thread designation and the leg dimensions.
4. Installation and Fitment
- Inspect both the adapter taper thread and the port thread before assembly. Burrs, swarf or a previously stretched thread will not seal, and a damaged port is the most common cause of a weeping joint.
- Clean the threads, then apply thread sealant or PTFE tape to the male taper thread. Keep the sealant or tape off the first thread crest so that none of it enters the fluid path.
- Thread the elbow in by hand until it seats, then tighten with a spanner on the hex. Tighten to snug plus the small additional movement needed to bring the second leg onto the required axis. Never force the elbow past the point where resistance rises sharply: a taper thread expands the port as it enters, and over-tightening splits the port boss.
- Plan the final orientation before final tightening. If the elbow passes the required angle, back it out and restart with fresh sealant or tape instead of tightening further to correct the position.
- Support the port body while tightening, especially on aluminium or thin-wall manifolds, so that the reaction torque is not carried by the boss alone.
- Taper threaded joints are not designed for repeated assembly and disassembly; each reassembly distorts the thread slightly and requires fresh sealant. Replace the adapter if the thread shows flattening or if a thread gauge indicates the taper has been drawn out.
- Common fitment errors: cross-threading on the first turn, which damages both threads; too little sealant, which shows as a slow weep at the thread; and over-tightening, which shows as a cracked port. Mixing a BSPT male end into a BSPP parallel port is also a frequent error: the two forms are not interchangeable and the joint will not seal.
5. Applications and Industries
Typical application tags for this series: hydraulic systems, water jetting, oil and gas, industrial equipment, construction machinery, agriculture, marine and material handling.
- Cross-standard equipment integration. A machine with ISO 7-1 taper threaded ports has to accept a hose route that leaves at 90°. The 1T9-SP adapter bridges the two ports directly, with no welded assembly and no extra joint.
- Repair and replacement. Taper threaded ports on older pumps, valves and cylinders are frequently damaged or fitted with the wrong thread form. A correctly sized BSPT male elbow restores the connection at the point of failure.
- High-pressure test benches. Manifolds and test blocks drilled with taper threaded ports use this elbow to route instrumentation lines out of a crowded panel at right angles.
- OEM assembly lines. When a fixed line layout is defined, the elbow is specified once and used on every unit, so the leg dimensions A and B in the table above become part of the line designer’s envelope.
6. Replacement and Cross-Reference Guide
Identify a replacement by standard and sealing method, never by brand. This catalogue is organised so that you can move between series without a brand reference.
Measure these three things on the part you want to replace:
- Thread size and pitch. Measure the outside diameter of the male taper thread and count the threads per inch. In this range, 1/8″ is 28 threads per inch, 1/4″ and 3/8″ are 19, 1/2″ and 3/4″ are 14, and 1″ and above are 11.
- Taper or parallel. Check the thread diameter along its length. A parallel thread holds the same diameter; a taper thread measures smaller at the first thread and grows towards the shoulder.
- Sealing method. This elbow seals on the thread flanks with a sealant. If the part you are replacing seals on a 60° cone seat, a bonded seal or an O-ring on a flat face, it belongs to a BSPP series, not to this one.
| What you measure | What to order |
|---|---|
| Male taper thread both ends, 90° | 1T9-SP series, matched size codes |
| Male taper on one end only | 1T-SP (straight) or 5T-SP / 5T9-SP (male x female) |
| Parallel male thread with a 60° seat or bonded seal | The BSPP series in this catalogue |
| Female taper thread both ends | 7T (straight) or 7T9-PK (90° elbow) |
| Taper male thread to seal a port permanently | 4T-SP or 4TN plug series |
7. Ordering, Packaging and Delivery
To order, send us the series code, the full part number, both thread sizes, the seal material or sealant requirement, the plating and the quantity. For this series a complete requirement reads: 1T9-SP, part number 1T9-04-06SP, end E R1/4″X19, end F R3/8″X19, carbon steel with trivalent chromium zinc plating, 500 pieces.
Parts are supplied in bulk cartons or in individual bags for distributor shelves, with labels showing the part number and thread sizes. Sample orders and mixed cartons are available so that you can validate the thread fit and the leg dimensions before a production order. Lead time is confirmed per order, together with the packing format and the labelling required for your warehouse or your production line.
8. FAQ
Q1. What is the difference between BSPP and BSPT, and can they be interchanged? BSPP is a parallel thread to ISO 228-1, where the joint is sealed on a 60° cone seat, a bonded seal or an O-ring rather than on the thread. BSPT is a taper thread to ISO 7-1, where the pressure-tight joint is made on the thread flanks with a sealant. They are not interchangeable: a taper male thread does not seal in a parallel port, and forcing one in damages the port.
Q2. What is the difference between a 60° cone seat and a bonded seal, and which should I choose? Both belong to the BSPP family. A 60° cone seat seals by metal-to-metal contact between the cone of the stud end and the cone of the port, so it needs no separate part. A bonded seal is a metal washer with an elastomer insert that seals on a flat face. Choose the cone seat for the highest pressures and the bonded seal where the port is a plain flat faced port.
Q3. How do I identify the correct 1T9-SP adapter size? Measure the outside diameter of the male taper thread and count the threads per inch, then match the thread size and pitch to a row of the table in 2.5. If the two ends differ in size, the part number carries both codes, with end E first. When in doubt, send a photo with a rule across the thread and we will identify the row for you.
Q4. What seal material should I select for my fluid and temperature? This series seals on the thread flanks and carries no elastomer, so the first choice is the thread sealant or tape, which must be compatible with the fluid. Where a related series in this catalogue uses an elastomer, NBR covers approximately -30°C to +100°C, FKM -20°C to +200°C and EPDM -40°C to +120°C. Confirm the sealant choice for your fluid with us before assembly.
Q5. How is the working pressure of this adapter determined? Working pressure is confirmed per order by HENGHUA engineering, based on the sealing method, thread size and material selected. It cannot be published as one figure for the whole range, because the strength of a taper threaded joint depends on the thread size, the wall thickness of the body and of the mating port, and the quality of the thread engagement.
Q6. What is the minimum order quantity and can I get samples? Sample quantities are available so that you can check thread fit and dimensions before committing to a production order. Minimum order quantity depends on the size, the material and the plating, and is confirmed in the quotation. Mixed cartons can be arranged for distributors who stock several sizes of the same series.
Q7. Is a BSPT elbow reusable after removal? A taper threaded joint is not intended for repeated assembly. Each time the elbow is removed and refitted, the thread deforms slightly and the sealant must be renewed. Replace the part if the thread shows flattening or if a thread gauge shows the taper has been drawn out.
