Metric Male 74° Cone Adapter with Bonded Seal 1QL — 74° Cone to Metric Male Face Seal

Metric male 74 degree cone metric male with bonded seal hydraulic adapter 1QL specification and dimension chart

Why This 74° Cone Adapter with Bonded Seal Passes the Compliance Gate

A bonded seal is a washer with a rubber element vulcanised into a metal ring, and it lives or dies on two dimensions: the free height of the rubber above the metal, and the hardness of the compound. Too little rubber and the joint seeps; too soft and it extrudes under pressure. Every 1QL 74° cone adapter with bonded seal is supplied with its washer dimensioned and hardness-tested against the catalogue code (ZHD-10 through ZHD-42), the sealing face on the adapter is machined square and flat to take the washer, and the 74° cone end is cut in the same setup as its thread and measured on a profile projector. The seal code is recorded on the packing so a replacement washer can be ordered without measuring the old one.

The part is a straight adapter with a metric male 74° cone on one side and a metric male stud end closed by a bonded seal on the other. Both ends are metric, and the catalogue covers both equal-ended and reducing combinations — for example 1QL-14-12 is M14×1.5 on the cone side against M12×1.5 on the port side.

Principais vantagens

  • Seals on a flat face, not in a groove. The bonded seal needs a machined spot face, not a precision O-ring groove, which makes it the practical choice for castings, welded bosses and older housings that were never cut for an O-ring.
  • Controlled compression. The metal ring of the washer limits how far the rubber can be squeezed, so the seal cannot be over-compressed by a gorilla with a wrench — the most common cause of face-seal failure.
  • Replaceable in the field. The washer is a consumable: change it during service and the joint is renewed without touching the adapter.
  • Two systems in one part. A wide metal 74° cone on the tube side, a face seal on the port side, joined without an intermediate nipple.
  • Reducing combinations. The table covers equal and reducing sizes, so a 74° cone line can be brought onto almost any metric port thread without stacking two adapters.

Especificações Técnicas

What Is a 74° Cone Adapter with Bonded Seal?

It is a straight adapter whose tube-side end is a metric male 74° cone connection and whose port-side end is a metric male stud with a bonded seal washer. The washer clamps between the shoulder of the adapter and a flat, machined face on the port; the rubber element provides the seal and the metal ring controls compression and provides a positive mechanical stop. In catalogue terms it is a bonded seal joint, and the washer codes in the table — ZHD-10 to ZHD-42 — identify the size to re-order.

Cone Geometry — 74°, 60° and 37° Are Not Interchangeable

The tube side is a metric 74° cone, and it does not interchange with the other cone systems in common use:

System Included angle Tópico Sealing location
Metric 74° cone (this family) 74° Metric On the 74° cone face
60° cone (DIN 3861 / ISO 1179) 60° BSP parallel (G) On the 60° cone face
37° flare (JIC, SAE J514) 37° UNF On the 37° flare face
Metric 24° cone (DIN 2353) 24° Metric On the 24° cone face

The included angles differ, so the contact band sits at a different diameter and a different axial position in every case. A “close” match produces edge or line contact that can pass a cold static test and weep at working temperature. Confirm both halves of the joint before ordering.

Dados dimensionais

In the drawing, E is the thread of the 74° cone end and F the thread of the bonded-seal stud end, D the tube outside diameter, A the length of the cone end from the hex to its face, B the length of the stud end from the hex to its face, L the overall length, S1 the across-flats hex of the body and S2 the across-flats of the stud end. The BONDED SEAL column gives the washer code for that size.

Two numbers in B decide whether the joint works: the stud length must be long enough for the washer to seat on the port face before the hex bottoms out, and the thread must still have full engagement. On a spot face that is recessed or on a port with a counterbore, check B and L against the drawing, not against the old part.

The washer code follows the port thread size, not the tube size — which is why a 1QL-14 (8 mm tube) uses ZHD-14 while the reducing 1QL-14-12 uses ZHD-12. Quote the washer code from the table, or from the marking on the part you are replacing.

Material and Heat Treatment

Carbon steel bodies, machined from bar or forged, hardened according to pressure class and plated in trivalent chromium or zinc-nickel. Stainless 304 / 316L is available to order. Bonded seals are supplied with a carbon steel or stainless ring and an NBR element as standard; FKM and EPDM elements are available for temperature and fluid compatibility.

Working Pressure and Operating Envelope

The face-seal end is rated with its bonded washer against a flat face of adequate hardness and surface finish; the tube end is rated with its sleeve and nut assembly. The lower of the two governs. A 4:1 burst ratio is typical of the steel body. Because the washer is the sealing element, the pressure and temperature envelope of the washer compound should be checked separately from the steel.

Temperature Range

NBR elements: −40 °C to +120 °C. FKM: −20 °C to +200 °C. EPDM for steam, water-glycol and brake-fluid adjacent duties where NBR is not compatible. Above the elastomer limit, a different sealing principle (metal cone or O-ring in a machined groove with a high-temperature compound) should be specified.

How to Read the Part Number Matrix

1QL-22 is family 1QL (metric 74° cone to metric male with bonded seal), size 22 = 14 mm tube with M22×1.5 on both ends. 1QL-22-18 is the reducing version: the same 14 mm tube and M22×1.5 cone end, but an M18×1.5 port end with the ZHD-18 washer. The first number always describes the cone end, the second the port end.

Installation and Fitment Guide

Step-by-Step Assembly

  1. Confirm the port thread matches F and that the port face is flat, machined, clean and free of burrs, paint or old gasket material. A face seal needs a face.
  2. Check that the bonded seal is the correct code, is not distorted and has not been compressed before — a washer that has already been torqued is scrap.
  3. Confirm the tube side is a 74° cone; 60° and 37° seats will not seal against it.
  4. Fit the washer over the stud thread and run the assembly in by hand until the washer touches the face.
  5. Hold the body with S1 and tighten to the specified stud-end torque. Stop when the metal ring seats — additional force does nothing but stretch the stud.
  6. Assemble the 74° cone end with its sleeve and nut, holding the body so the face joint stays undisturbed.
  7. Re-check both ends after the first thermal cycle; replace the washer whenever the joint has been broken.

Torque and Sealing Notes

The face-seal end does not need thread sealant — the thread provides clamping, the washer provides sealing. The 74° cone end is metal-to-metal and also needs no tape or compound. Torque the face seal to the point where the metal ring is seated, no further; the rubber element cannot compress beyond the ring, so extra torque simply loads the stud. Always replace the washer when the joint is opened.

Installation Warnings

  • Do not reuse a bonded seal that has been torqued, heated or handled roughly.
  • Do not fit a bonded seal against a rough, painted, curved or damaged face.
  • Do not mix 74°, 60°, 37° and 24° cone components.
  • Do not use thread sealant as a substitute for a washer.
  • Do not hold the adapter by the cone end when tightening the face-seal end.

Applications and Industries

Adapter with bonded seals are common where older or cast housings have flat spot faces rather than O-ring grooves: machine tools, presses, hydraulic power units, gearboxes, pumps, mobile machinery, marine and dock equipment and test benches. The metric male 74° cone adapter with bonded seal is the standard way to bring a 74° cone tube run onto a flat-faced metric port with a controlled, replaceable seal.

OEM Customization and Quality Traceability

Reducing and enlarging combinations, non-standard lengths, special hex, alternative materials, alternative seal compounds and customer plating are produced to drawing. Incoming material verification, first-article inspection, thread gauging, cone and face measurement, washer hardness and height verification, proof pressure testing on sample lots and final inspection are recorded against the order, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates on request.

FAQ

What is a bonded seal? A washer with a rubber element chemically bonded into a metal ring. The rubber seals; the metal ring limits compression and stops over-squeezing.

How is it different from an O-ring? An O-ring needs a machined groove. A bonded seal needs only a flat spot face, and it cannot be over-compressed.

Which washer do I need? The code in the table for your port thread — ZHD-10 to ZHD-42. It follows the port thread, not the tube size.

Does the port end need sealant? No. The washer seals; the thread clamps.

Can I reuse the washer? No. Replace it whenever the joint is broken.

Is this the same as an ISO 6149 adapter? No. The 1QH family seals on an O-ring in a grooved port per ISO 6149-3. This family seals on a flat face with a bonded washer.
