What Is an ORFS Female Hydraulic Hose Fitting?

ORFS (O-Ring Face Seal) seals on the flat end faces, not on the threads. An ORFS female hydraulic hose fitting carries a swivel nut, while the mating male end is a flat face with a machined O-ring groove. When the nut is torqued, the two faces meet and the O-ring is compressed, so sealing does not depend on thread interference.

As with all SAE J1453 fittings and ISO 8434-3 fittings, ORFS is not interchangeable with JIC 37 degree (SAE J514), ORB (SAE J1926 / ISO 11926) or SAE 45 degree (SAE J513). 2. Mark the insertion depth on the hose cover using the data sheet.
3. Lubricate the hose tail and push the fitting in to the mark without twisting.
4. Crimp to the specified dimension, then verify the crimp OD with a vernier caliper.

Always match the crimp setting to the hose and fitting combination in the data sheet. A wrong setting will not be corrected later by over-torquing the nut.

Connecting the ORFS End

Clean the flat face and check the O-ring before every assembly. Replace the O-ring if it is cut, flattened or hardened, then seat it fully in the groove. Thread the swivel nut on by hand until the faces touch, then torque to the value in the data sheet. The female swivel can be backed off to align the hose without breaking the seal, but never wrap the threads with tape or apply sealant.
