1J Adapter – JIC Male 74° Cone Straight Hydraulic Adapter (SAE J514)

The 1J adapter is a straight JIC male adapter with a 74° cone at each end, made to the SAE J514 standard, and it joins two 74° cone tube ends. It is used where a hydraulic line has to be extended, converted between two JIC 74° cone sizes, or brought out of a manifold with a 74° cone seat. Both ends are male 74° cone stud ends, so the part is a straight stud.

1. What a 1J Adapter Does

A 1J adapter is a straight stud with a JIC 74° cone male end at each side. It connects a tube assembly that is terminated with a JIC 74° cone nut and sleeve to a second JIC 74° cone connection, either the same size or a reduced size.

The part does one job: it moves fluid between two 74° cone ports without changing direction. Equal-ended versions such as 1J-08 carry the same thread at both ends. Reducing versions such as 1J-08-12 carry a smaller thread at the first end and a larger thread at the second end, which converts a line without an additional reducer.

Because the seal is a cone seal, the condition of both cones governs the result. A nicked or flattened cone leaks no matter how much torque is applied afterwards, and section 4 covers the handling rules that keep the cones serviceable.

2.3 Construction and Materials

The body of this JIC male adapter is machined from bar stock on CNC lathes, with the cone, the threads and the hex turned in one setup so that the two ends stay concentric.

  • Body material: carbon steel as standard; 304 stainless steel or 316 stainless steel on request; brass for selected sizes.

2.4 Pressure and Temperature

Working pressure for a 1J adapter is not set by the series code. It is governed by the thread size, the wall thickness of the tube and the stud, the sealing method and the material selected. Temperature is a material question and is stated here as a material fact rather than a performance claim. For NBR seals, the working range is approximately -30°C to +100°C. For FKM (Viton-type) seals, it is approximately -20°C to +200°C. For EPDM seals, it is approximately -40°C to +120°C. These figures apply to the elastomer, and therefore to the elastomer-sealed components in a circuit rather than to the metal cone joint of this series.

Carbon steel with zinc plating suits general hydraulic service; specify 304 or 316 stainless steel for corrosive, offshore or washdown environments.

What each column means

  • PART NO. – the HENGHUA part number. The series prefix 1J is followed by one size code for an equal-ended part, or by two size codes separated by a dash for a reducing part.
  • E – the thread of connection 1, printed as diameter x threads per inch in the SAE style, for example 7/16"X20.
  • F – the thread of connection 2, in the same notation. When E and F are identical the part is equal-ended.
  • A – the length from the end of connection 1 (the cone end) to the hex face on that side, in millimetres, as marked on the series drawing.
  • B – the equivalent length from the end of connection 2 to the hex face on that side, in millimetres.
  • L – the overall length of the part from cone end to cone end, in millimetres.
  • S1 – the hex across flats, in millimetres, used to hold the body with a wrench during assembly.

Thread size and dash chart

The dash code is the size step. In the SAE convention it follows the nominal tube outside diameter in sixteenths of an inch, so -04 is a 1/4″ tube size. The printed thread for each equal-ended code is:

Note: the dash chart above gives the thread of the equal-ended part for each size code. The printed row 1J-05 lists 1/2"X14 at connection 1, which is reproduced in table 2.5 exactly as printed; the size 05 cone thread quoted by every reducing row of the same series and by the matching nut and sleeve is 1/2"x20, so the dash chart uses that value. Confirm the thread against your port drawing before ordering a size 05 part.

Nut and sleeve are ordered separately. The 1J stud does not include them. Use nut NB200 with sleeve NB500 for metric tube, and nut NB200 with sleeve NB300 for inch tube.

3. How to Read a 1J Part Number

A 1J part number has three elements: the series prefix, one or two size codes, and no sealing suffix on this series.

The prefix 1J identifies the family: a straight JIC male 74° cone stud made to SAE J514. A different prefix in the same catalogue identifies a different geometry, such as an elbow, a female seat version, a plug, or a cross standard adapter with an NPT or BSPT port at the other end.

The size code is the SAE dash size. One code means both ends are the same size. Two codes separated by a dash mean the first code is connection 1 (the E column) and the second code is connection 2 (the F column), which makes the part a reducer.

Worked example: 1J-04-06.

  • 1J – straight JIC male 74° cone stud, SAE J514.
  • 04 – connection 1 is the 7/16″x20 size.
  • 06 – connection 2 is the 9/16″x18 size.
  • From the table: A is 14 mm, B is 14.1 mm, L is 34.1 mm and S1 is 17 mm.

A buyer ordering 1J-04-06 therefore receives a straight stud with a smaller 74° cone end and a larger 74° cone end, and must fit the nut and sleeve that match each tube, not just each stud thread.

The same size codes are used across the JIC 74° cone family, so the plug and elbow versions of a given size fit the same tube assemblies as the straight stud. Check the series prefix first, then the size codes.

4. Installation and Fitment

A 74° cone joint is assembled by hand first and then tightened to seat the cone. HENGHUA does not print a single torque figure for the series, because the correct tightening depends on the nut and sleeve fitted, the tube material and the wall thickness. Follow the nut supplier’s recommendation, or confirm the tightening figure with HENGHUA engineering per order. Bring the nut up by hand until it is snug against the cone, then tighten in stages, and never use a pipe extension or an impact tool on a cone joint.

Cone seat handling: keep both the stud cone and the mating female cone clean and free of nicks. Wipe the cone with a lint-free cloth and inspect it under good light before assembly. A cone that has been overtightened is already deformed and must be replaced.

Thread preparation: JIC 74° cone threads are not the sealing element, so do not wrap them with thread tape or use sealant as a leak cure. A light oil on the threads lets the nut run up smoothly.

Contamination control: cap open ends before storage and before the line goes back into service, because debris that reaches the cone seat scores the faces and produces a seep that no further tightening removes.

Alignment: bring the tube squarely to the stud before starting the nut, because a tube pulled sideways into the cone loads the seat on one side and weeps at first pressure.

Reuse policy: the stud body with an undamaged cone can be reused. The nut and sleeve are the wear items, and the assembly is replaced whenever a cone shows galling or a bright polished band.

Common fitment errors and their symptoms:

  • Mixing a 37° flare with a 74° cone seat. Symptom: the nut runs up but the joint weeps at first pressure, and the two seat angles are visibly different under inspection.
  • Fitting the wrong dash size. Symptom: the nut will not start by hand, or starts and then bottoms out without contact on the cone.
  • Overtightening to stop a seep. Symptom: a deformed cone and a leak that returns immediately.
  • Reusing a sleeve already compressed on another tube. Symptom: the tube pulls back from the cone and the joint leaks under vibration.

Six-step assembly

  1. Confirm the part number against the line list and check that both threads match the mating tube assemblies.
  2. Inspect both cones and the mating seats for nicks, corrosion and previous overtightening marks.
  3. Clean the cone and the threads with a lint-free cloth and a compatible cleaning fluid.
  4. Fit the nut and sleeve to each tube, then bring the tube square to the stud by hand.
  5. Run the nut up by hand until it is snug, then tighten in stages to the recommended figure without an extension bar.
  6. Pressurise the circuit, check both ends for weeping, and re-check the tightness after the first thermal cycle.

5. Applications and Industries

Application tags for this series: hydraulic systems, water jetting, oil and gas, industrial equipment, construction machinery, agriculture, marine, material handling. Cross-standard equipment integration. A machine built to an SAE J514 tube standard often has to connect to a line assembled elsewhere. This series provides the 74° cone interface on both sides, and reducing rows such as 1J-06-12 let one part step between a smaller tube run and a larger manifold port.

Cross-reference for this series is organised by standard and sealing method, never by brand. Two hydraulic tube fittings interchange only if the standard, the thread size, the seat angle and the seal type all match.

A JIC male adapter in this series is a SAE J514 straight stud with a 74° cone at both ends. It is not interchangeable with a JIC 37° flare fitting: the thread may look similar at some sizes, but a 37° flare seals on the conical flare face while a 74° cone seals on the wide cone face, and the two seats will not mate. It is also not interchangeable with an ORFS fitting, which seals a flat face against an elastomeric O-ring under SAE J1453, or with an NPT fitting, which seals on the thread flanks under ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 and needs a sealant.

To identify the correct replacement, measure three things.

  1. Thread. Measure the outside diameter of the thread and the pitch. A 7/16″ end measures about 11.1 mm outside diameter with 20 threads per inch; a 9/16″ end measures about 14.3 mm with 18 threads per inch. Record diameter and pitch together, because the same diameter can appear with a different pitch in another family.
  2. Seat angle. Use a seat angle gauge or a straight edge against the cone. A 74° cone is a wide, shallow cone; a 37° flare is a narrow, steeper flare. If the angles differ, the parts do not interchange regardless of thread match.
  3. Seal type. Confirm whether the joint relies on a metal cone, an elastomer O-ring or the thread itself. A 74° cone joint has no O-ring in the sealing path; if the part in your hand has a captive O-ring or a flat face groove, it belongs to a different family.

Where the port standard is not SAE J514, a cross standard adapter of the same size is the correct part rather than a forced thread. Record the three measurements with the part number, and HENGHUA can match the replacement to the series and size code from the printed table in section 2.5.

What is the difference between JIC 37° flare and ORFS, and which should I use?

A JIC 37° flare joint seals metal-to-metal on a 37° conical flare face under SAE J514. An ORFS joint seals a flat face against an elastomeric O-ring under SAE J1453. Choose the family that matches the port already on the equipment, because the two are not interchangeable. The 1J series is on the JIC 74° cone side of SAE J514, so confirm the seat angle before ordering.

Can NPT and BSPT be interchanged?

No. NPT is a 60° taper pipe thread under ANSI/ASME B1.20.1, and BSPT is a 55° taper pipe thread under ISO 7-1. The thread form, the angle and the pitch differ, so the two will not seal even though some sizes start by hand. Use the thread that the port is machined to, and order a cross standard adapter when the two sides differ, rather than forcing a mismatched pipe thread.

How do I identify the correct 1J size?

Measure the thread outside diameter and the pitch on the mating port, then read across the E and F columns of table 2.5 for that thread pair. When the thread and the seat angle both match a printed row, that row is the correct part number.

What seal material should I select for my fluid and temperature?

For general mineral hydraulic oil within -30°C to +100°C, NBR is the usual choice. For higher temperatures up to approximately +200°C, or where the fluid attacks NBR, choose FKM (Viton-type).
