1N9 Adapter – 90° Elbow NPT Male Hydraulic Adapter (ANSI/ASME B1.20.1)
The 1N9 adapter is a 90° elbow hydraulic adapter with an external NPT taper pipe thread at both ends, made to ANSI/ASME B1.20.1, and it turns a pipe-threaded connection through a right angle. It joins a female NPT port on one leg to a female NPT port on the other leg, so a line can be taken out of a manifold, valve block or pump housing at 90° without bending the pipe or the tube itself.
Because both ends seal on the pipe thread rather than on a cone or an O-ring, both mating ports must be machined to the same NPT size and taper form. That exact match at both ends is the precondition for eliminating leakage at the conversion point.

1. What a 1N9 Adapter Does
A 1N9 adapter is a 90° elbow with an external NPT taper pipe thread at each end. It connects two female NPT ports that sit at right angles to one another, and it is the usual way to bring a pipe-threaded line out of a block and away at 90° without adding an elbow plus a nipple.
The part moves fluid between two pipe-threaded ports and turns the direction of flow. Equal-ended versions such as 1N9-08 carry the same thread at both ends; reducing versions such as 1N9-04-08 carry a smaller thread at the first end and a larger thread at the second end, so the elbow also performs the size change.
Both ends of this series are male. The horizontal end is the E connection and the vertical end is the F connection, exactly as marked on the series drawing. On an equal-ended part the two threads are identical; on a reducing part the E thread is the smaller of the two printed threads.
An NPT joint is a thread-sealing joint, so the thread itself is the sealing element. This series therefore belongs to the pipe-thread family of the catalogue rather than to the JIC 37° flare, JIC 74° cone, SAE O-ring boss, ORFS or four-bolt flange families, where the seal is made on a machined seat. 2. 1N9 Specifications
2.1 Connection 1 – NPT male taper end (E)

2.2 Connection 2 – NPT male taper end (F)
- Thread standard and family: ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 general purpose taper pipe thread (NPT); dryseal NPTF to SAE J476 available on request.
- Thread size range available: 1/8″x27 to 2″x11.5. In a reducing row this end is the larger of the two threads printed, and it is the leg that runs at 90° to connection 1.

Connections 1 and 2 are the same family, gender and sealing type; they differ only in the thread size in a reducing row and in the direction of the leg. Read E as the horizontal axis and F as the vertical axis, as printed in table 2.5 and on the series drawing.
2.3 Construction and Materials
The body is machined from bar stock on CNC lathes, with the two threads, the elbow port and the hex turned in one setup so that the two thread axes stay square to one another.
- Body material: carbon steel as standard; 304 or 316 stainless steel on request; brass for selected sizes.
- Plating and finish: trivalent chromium zinc plating (Cr3+) for carbon steel as standard; zinc-nickel plating available. Plating thickness and corrosion performance are confirmed per order.
- Seal material options: the NPT joint here seals on the thread, so the adapter itself carries no elastomer. Where the same circuit uses elastomer-sealed components, NBR, FKM and EPDM are the available compounds.
- Machining process: bar-stock turning, thread form produced to the port standard, taper and thread pitch checked against the drawing with gauges.
- Hex feature: a single hex (S1) on the lower body, from 11 mm to 63 mm across flats, used to hold the elbow while each end is made up. No bulkhead feature in this series.
2.4 Pressure and Temperature
Working pressure for a 1N9 adapter is not set by the series code. It is governed by the thread size, the wall thickness of the elbow body, the sealing method and the material selected. Working pressure for these sizes is confirmed per order by HENGHUA engineering, based on the thread size, sealing method and material selected.
Temperature is a material fact, not a performance claim. NBR seals work at approximately -30°C to +100°C, FKM (Viton-type) at approximately -20°C to +200°C, and EPDM at approximately -40°C to +120°C. The NPT joint here is a metal thread joint, so these figures apply to the elastomer-sealed components of the same circuit. Carbon steel with zinc plating suits general hydraulic service; specify 304 or 316 stainless steel for corrosive, offshore or washdown environments.

What each column means
- PART NO. – the HENGHUA part number: the prefix
1N9, then one size code for an equal-ended part or two codes for a reducing part. - E – the thread of connection 1, the horizontal leg, printed with the letter Z for the external NPT taper pipe thread, then the pipe size and the threads per inch, for example
Z1/2"X14. - F – the thread of connection 2, the vertical leg, in the same notation. When E and F match, the part is equal-ended.
- A – the length from the end of connection 1 to the centre line of the vertical leg, in millimetres.

The printed table contains no nut, sleeve, pressure or temperature column, and no note lines are printed under it, so the thread pairs in the E and F columns are the complete specifying data for this series.
3. How to Read a 1N9 Part Number
A 1N9 part number has three elements: the series prefix, one or two size codes, and no sealing suffix.
The prefix 1N9 identifies the family: a 90° elbow with an external NPT taper pipe thread at both ends. A different prefix identifies a different geometry, such as a straight NPT male adapter, an NPT male to NPT female adapter, a tee, a plug, or a cross standard adapter with a JIC or BSPT end.
The size code is the nominal pipe size step, and it matches the pipe size printed in the E and F columns. One code means both ends are the same size; two codes mean the first is connection 1 (the E column) and the second is connection 2 (the F column), which makes the part a reducer built into the elbow.

A buyer ordering 1N9-04-08 receives a 90° elbow with a smaller taper thread on the horizontal leg and a larger one on the vertical leg, which lets a 1/4″ pipe run leave a 1/2″ port at a right angle without a separate reducer.
4. Installation and Fitment
This 1N9 adapter is a thread-sealing part, so the make-up procedure differs from a cone or O-ring sealed joint. HENGHUA does not print a single torque figure for the series, because the correct tightening depends on the port material and the thread condition. Follow the equipment maker’s recommendation, or confirm the figure with HENGHUA engineering per order, and never use an extension bar or an impact tool on a taper pipe thread.
Thread preparation: apply a liquid thread sealant or PTFE tape to the male taper thread, leaving the first thread clean so that the sealant does not enter the circuit. The thread is the sealing element here, so a dry NPT thread will weep no matter how hard it is tightened.
Port condition: inspect the female port for a cracked or bell-mouthed thread and for old sealant left in the flanks. A tired port thread cannot be recovered by more torque. Bring the elbow squarely to the port before starting the thread, and hold the body hex (S1) while the line side is made up, so that the tightening load does not travel through the seated port thread.
Contamination control: cap open ends before storage and before the line returns to service, because debris in the thread flanks and the flow path is a common cause of a weeping joint. An adapter with clean, undamaged threads and an undamaged taper can be reused after the old sealant is removed; one with flattened thread crests, a crack at the hex or a scored taper is replaced.
Common fitment errors and their symptoms:
- Mixing an NPT thread with a BSPT thread. Symptom: the two start by hand at some sizes, then bind or weep, because the thread angle and the pitch do not match.
- Overtightening to stop a seep. Symptom: a cracked port boss or a split hex, because a taper thread acts as a wedge in a brittle casting.
- Using a 37° flare or an O-ring boss part in an NPT port. Symptom: the part screws in but there is no cone or O-ring to seat against, and the joint leaks at first pressure.
Six-step assembly
- Confirm the part number against the line list and check that the E and F threads match the two ports.
- Inspect both port threads and the adapter threads for damage, corrosion and old sealant.
- Clean the threads with a lint-free cloth and a compatible cleaning fluid.
- Apply thread sealant to the male taper thread, leaving the first thread clean.
- Start each end by hand, hold the body hex with a wrench, and tighten progressively without an extension bar.
- Pressurise the circuit, check both legs for weeping, and re-check the tightness after the first thermal cycle.
5. Applications and Industries
Application tags for this series: hydraulic systems, water jetting, oil and gas, industrial equipment, construction machinery, agriculture, marine, material handling. The part is specified by its thread pair rather than by industry.
Pipe-threaded equipment integration. Many pumps, valve blocks, filters and cylinders still present a female NPT port, even where the rest of a machine uses flared or O-ring sealed lines. This adapter provides the pipe-thread interface on both legs and turns the line at 90°, which is the usual requirement at a pump outlet or a return-line filter head.
Repair and replacement. Maintenance crews fit a 1N9 adapter when a bent pipe or a damaged nipple has to be replaced on site. A single elbow replaces a straight adapter plus a fitting elbow, which removes one joint from the leaked path.
High-pressure test benches. Test rigs need repeatable interfaces between the pump side, the gauge line and the test article. A taper pipe thread is easy to remake on a bench, and the body hex lets the elbow be held while the gauge side is tightened.
Water jetting and washdown equipment. Water jetting rigs, pressure washers and washdown manifolds commonly use NPT ports. Specify 304 or 316 stainless steel for these duties so that the body resists the water and the chemicals used in the process.

Cross-reference for this series is organised by standard and sealing method, never by brand. Two adapters interchange only if the standard, thread size, taper form and sealing method all match.
A 1N9 adapter is a 90° elbow with an NPT taper pipe thread to ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 at both ends. It is not interchangeable with a BSPT part: NPT is a 60° taper pipe thread and BSPT is a 55° taper pipe thread under ISO 7-1, so the thread angle and form differ even where the pitch looks similar on a gauge. It is also not interchangeable with a BSPP part, where the joint is not pressure-tight on the threads and needs a 60° seat or a bonded seal under ISO 228-1 / ISO 1179, or with any JIC 37° flare, JIC 74° cone, SAE O-ring boss, ORFS or four-bolt flange part, where the seal is made on a machined seat.
To identify the correct replacement, measure three things.
- Thread diameter and pitch. Measure the outside diameter of the male taper thread and count the threads over one inch. The printed E and F columns give the pitch for each size, for example
Z1/2"X14is 14 threads per inch. Record diameter and pitch together, because a similar diameter appears with a different pitch elsewhere. - Taper form. Confirm that the thread is a taper pipe thread and not a parallel one. An NPT thread narrows along its length and seats by wedging into the port; a parallel thread runs straight and needs a seat or a washer.
- Sealing method. Confirm whether the joint relies on the thread, a cone, an elastomeric O-ring or a flat face. This series seals on the thread and needs a sealant; a part with a cone, a captive O-ring or a flat grooved face belongs to another family and will not seal in an NPT port.
Where the port standard is not NPT, a cross standard adapter of the same pipe size is the correct part. Record the three measurements with the part number, and HENGHUA can match the replacement to the series and size code in table 2.5.

8. FAQ
What is the difference between JIC 37° flare and ORFS, and which should I use?
A JIC 37° flare joint seals metal-to-metal on a 37° conical flare face under SAE J514. An ORFS joint seals a flat face against an elastomeric O-ring under SAE J1453. Choose the family that matches the port already on the equipment, because the two are not interchangeable. This series is neither of these: it is an NPT taper pipe thread part that seals on the thread, so it is used only where both ports are female NPT.
Can NPT and BSPT be interchanged?
No. NPT is a 60° taper pipe thread under ANSI/ASME B1.20.1, and BSPT is a 55° taper pipe thread under ISO 7-1. The thread form, angle and pitch differ, so the two will not seal even though some sizes start by hand. Order a cross standard adapter when the two sides differ.
How do I identify the correct 1N9 size?
Measure the outside diameter of the male thread on the mating part or the port, count the threads over one inch, and read across the E and F columns of table 2.5 for that thread pair. When both threads and the taper form match a printed row, that row is the correct part number. If one end is NPT and the other is a different standard, the correct part is a cross standard adapter.

Why does an NPT joint need a sealant while a JIC cone joint does not?
On an NPT joint the seal is made on the thread flanks, so a sealant or a dryseal NPTF thread is what stops the leak; the pressure path crosses the thread. On a JIC 74° cone or 37° flare joint the thread only provides the clamping load, and the seal is made by metal-to-metal contact on the cone or flare face, so no sealant is used there. Applying the wrong rule, such as tape on a cone thread, is a common cause of a joint that weeps.
Can I fit the 1N9 adapter to a port with a 37° flare seat or an SAE O-ring boss?
No. A 37° flare seat, a 74° cone seat and an O-ring boss are all machined sealing surfaces, and a taper pipe thread has nothing to seat against them. Use the family that matches the port, or a cross standard adapter that presents the correct seat on one end and the correct thread on the other, and confirm the port standard from the equipment drawing before ordering.
