1. What a 2J4 Adapter Does
A 2J4 adapter is a 45° elbow body with a JIC male 74° cone at connection 1 and a JIC female 74° seat at connection 2. It joins a male cone stud end on one side to a male cone stud end on the other, so both ends belong to the SAE J514 74° cone family and each seal is metal-to-metal.
The part changes the gender of a 74° connection and angles the line through 45° in the same body. Every printed row of this series is equal-ended, so 2J4-08 presents a 3/4″x16 male cone end and a 3/4″x16 female seat end. The body angle, not the threads, is the reason a buyer selects this series over the straight version.
Why a male-to-female adapter is used. A male-to-male stud joins two female seats. Where a circuit presents a male stud that has to be extended, or where a new fixed seat has to be created in front of a stud, the male-to-female function is required, and this series provides it with a 45° bend.
The first case is extending a stud out of a seat. A stud that sits deep in a manifold seat, or that is shorter than the space the line has to cross, cannot be reached by the tube assembly in a straight line. This adapter lands its male cone end on that existing seat and carries a new female seat away at 45°, so the tube leaves the block on a diagonal instead of running along the stud axis.
The second case is putting a fixed female seat onto a male stud. When a line already presents a male cone stud, a second stud cannot land on it. This adapter screws its female seat end onto that stud and presents a machined 74° internal seat on the new 45° axis, which a further tube assembly can enter. No swivel nut enters this sealing path.
How the two ends differ even though both are 74°. Both ends are made to the same 74° included angle, which is what makes them one family and lets either end seal against the standard 74° counterpart. The difference is which side of the joint each end presents. Connection 1, the E end, is a male end carrying an external 74° cone, a convex machined surface, and that cone is the sealing element. Connection 2, the F end, is a female end carrying an internal 74° seat, a concave machined surface, plus an internal thread, and that seat is what the opposite part seals against. One end seals by being the cone, the other by receiving a cone, so a part identified as “74°” on the thread alone may still be the wrong gender for the port.

Both connections are on the same sealing family and, on this series, the same thread size, so the choices are the gender of each end and the direction of the 45° leg. The E and F columns and the leg dimension B answer those questions directly.
2.3 Construction and Materials
The body of a 2J4 adapter is machined from bar stock on CNC lathes, with the cone, the seat, the threads and both hexes turned so that the 45° leg is held to the drawing and each threaded end stays square to its own axis.
- Body material: carbon steel as standard; 304 or 316 stainless steel on request; brass for selected sizes.
- Plating and finish: trivalent chromium zinc plating (Cr3+) for carbon steel as standard; zinc-nickel plating available. Plating thickness and corrosion performance are confirmed per order.
- Seal material options: both joints of this series are metal-to-metal, so the adapter itself carries no elastomer. Where the same circuit uses elastomer-sealed components, NBR, FKM and EPDM are the available compounds.

2.4 Pressure and Temperature
Working pressure for a 2J4 adapter is not set by the series code. It is governed by the thread size, the wall thickness of the elbow body, the sealing method and the material selected. Working pressure for these sizes is confirmed per order by HENGHUA engineering, based on the thread size, sealing method and material selected.
Temperature is a material fact, not a performance claim. NBR seals work at approximately -30°C to +100°C, FKM (Viton-type) at approximately -20°C to +200°C, and EPDM at approximately -40°C to +120°C. Because the 74° cone joints here are metal-to-metal, these figures apply to the elastomer-sealed components of the same circuit. Carbon steel with zinc plating suits general hydraulic service; specify 304 or 316 stainless steel for corrosive duty.

What each column means
- PART NO. – the HENGHUA part number: the prefix

The dash code is the size step, following the nominal tube outside diameter in sixteenths of an inch, so -04 is a 1/4″ tube size. The printed thread for each code is:

Nut and sleeve are ordered separately. The adapter is supplied as the body only. Use nut NB200 with sleeve NB500 for metric tube, and nut NB200 with sleeve NB300 for inch tube.
3. How to Read a 2J4 Part Number
A 2J4 part number has two elements: the series prefix and the size code. This series carries no suffix.
The prefix 2J4 identifies the family: a 45° elbow JIC adapter with a male 74° cone at one end and a female 74° seat at the other. A different prefix identifies a different geometry, such as the straight version of this gender combination, its 90° elbow, a male-to-male stud, a plug, or a cross standard adapter with an NPT or BSPT thread.
The size code is the SAE dash size, and on this series it applies to both ends. That makes every printed part number equal-ended, so the number of codes does not change the reading: a reducing combination is a special made to a drawing rather than a printed row.
Worked example: 2J4-06.
2J4– 45° elbow JIC male 74° cone to JIC female 74° seat adapter, SAE J514.06– both ends are the 9/16″x18 size.- From the table: A is 22.8 mm, B is 10.5 mm, S1 is 14 mm and S2 is 19 mm.
A buyer ordering 2J4-06 receives a 45° elbow whose male cone end lands on an existing 9/16″x18 seat and whose female seat end presents a 9/16″x18 seat on the angled axis. The leg dimension B, 10.5 mm here, is the number to check against the space behind the port.
4. Installation and Fitment
A 74° cone joint is assembled by hand first and then tightened to seat the cone. HENGHUA does not print a single torque figure for the series, because the correct tightening depends on the nut and sleeve fitted, the tube material and the wall thickness. Follow the nut supplier’s recommendation, or confirm the figure with HENGHUA engineering per order, and never use an extension bar or an impact tool.
Make up the female seat end first where its male stud is fixed to a port, because the body hex S2 can be held while that joint is set. Then bring the tube assembly to the male cone end and hold S1 while the nut is tightened, which keeps the tightening load out of a seated joint.
Keep the cone and the internal seat clean and free of nicks. JIC 74° cone threads are not the sealing element, so do not use thread tape or sealant as a leak cure. Cap open ends before storage, because debris scores the faces and produces a seep. Bring the tube squarely to the adapter, because on a 45° body the tube has to follow the angled leg, and forcing it along a straight line side-loads the seat. The body can be reused while both the cone and the seat are undamaged.
Common fitment errors and their symptoms:
- Landing the female seat end on a female seat. Symptom: the two internal seats face each other, so the thread will not start.
- Choosing the 45° body where the routing needs a right angle. Symptom: the tube has to be sprung sideways to reach the leg, and the joint weeps under vibration.
- Fitting the wrong dash size. Symptom: the nut will not start by hand, or starts and then bottoms out without contact on the cone.
Six-step assembly
- Confirm the part number against the line list, and confirm which end in hand is the male cone and which is the female seat.
- Inspect the cone, the internal seat and the mating surfaces for nicks, corrosion and previous overtightening marks.
- Clean the cone, the seat and the threads with a lint-free cloth and a compatible cleaning fluid.
- Screw the female seat end onto its male stud by hand, hold S2 with a wrench and tighten that joint in stages.
- Fit the nut and sleeve to the tube, bring the tube square to the male cone end along the leg, then hold S1 and tighten the nut in stages.
- Pressurise the circuit, check both joints for weeping, and re-check the tightness after the first thermal cycle.

Routing around an obstruction. Where a straight adapter would leave the tube fouling a neighbouring port, a pump body or a frame member, the 45° body steps the line away with one joint instead of two, and it needs less room behind the adapter than a 90° elbow.
Extending a stud out of a manifold seat at an angle. The male cone end of this adapter lands on a recessed or short seat and carries the new female seat out at 45° to the original stud axis, which suits a crowded manifold face where the tube has to leave the block diagonally.
Putting a fixed female seat on a male stud. An equipment port or a welded boss can present a male 74° cone stud. The female seat end screws onto that stud and presents a new machined 74° seat on the angled axis, so a further tube assembly can be connected. Because the seat is machined into the elbow body rather than carried by a swivel nut, no extra swivel joint enters the sealing path.
Repair, test benches and OEM lines. Maintenance crews fit a 2J4 adapter when a damaged tube end, a seized stud or a stripped seat has to be resolved on site, and one angled adapter often replaces a straight adapter plus a fitting elbow, removing a joint from the leaked path. Test rigs use the same part for repeatable interfaces between the pump, the gauge line and the test article, and for production lines it is supplied to a drawing-based specification fixed per programme.
6. Replacement and Cross-Reference Guide
Cross-reference for this series is organised by standard and sealing method, never by brand. Two adapters interchange only if the standard, thread size, seat angle, gender at each end, body angle and seal type all match.
This 2J4 adapter is a SAE J514 45° elbow adapter with a male 74° cone at connection 1 and a female 74° seat at connection 2. It is not interchangeable with a JIC 37° flare fitting: a 37° flare seals on the conical flare face while a 74° cone seals on the wide cone face, and the two seats will not mate. It is also not interchangeable with an ORFS fitting under SAE J1453, with an SAE O-ring boss stud end under SAE J1926-3, or with an NPT fitting, which seals on the thread flanks under ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 and needs a sealant.
To identify the correct replacement, measure three things.
- Thread. Measure the outside diameter and the pitch on both ends, and note which end has the external thread and which has the internal thread. A 3/4″ end measures about 19.0 mm outside diameter with 16 threads per inch; a 9/16″ end measures about 14.3 mm with 18 threads per inch. Record diameter, pitch and gender together.
- Seat angle. Use a seat angle gauge or a straight edge against the cone or the seat. A 74° cone is wide and shallow; a 37° flare is narrower and steeper. If the angles differ, the parts do not interchange regardless of thread match.
- Gender, body angle and seal type. Confirm whether each end is a male cone or a female seat, confirm whether the joint relies on a metal cone, an elastomeric O-ring or the thread itself, and check the leg dimension. A 74° cone joint has no O-ring in its sealing path, and a straight, 45° or 90° body is not interchangeable in a fixed routing even when the threads match.
Where the port standard is not SAE J514, a cross standard adapter of the same size is the correct part. Record the three measurements with the part number, and HENGHUA can match the replacement to the series and size code in table 2.5.

8. FAQ
What is the difference between JIC 37° flare and ORFS, and which should I use?
A JIC 37° flare joint seals metal-to-metal on a 37° conical flare face under SAE J514. An ORFS joint seals a flat face against an elastomeric O-ring under SAE J1453. Choose the family that matches the port already on the equipment, because the two are not interchangeable; the 2J4 series is on the JIC 74° cone side, so confirm the seat angle first.
Can NPT and BSPT be interchanged?
No. NPT is a 60° taper pipe thread under ANSI/ASME B1.20.1, and BSPT is a 55° taper pipe thread under ISO 7-1. The thread form, angle and pitch differ, so the two will not seal even though some sizes start by hand. Order a cross standard adapter when the two sides differ.
How do I identify the correct 2J4 size?
Measure the thread outside diameter and the pitch on both mating interfaces, note the gender of each, and check the leg dimension against the space available. Read across the E and F columns of table 2.5, and when thread, seat angle, gender and body angle all match a printed row, that row is the correct part number.
