A caustic hose for sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide service must hold a strongly alkaline liquid, survive the heat it is usually handled at, and flush clean before the alkali crystallizes. Those three demands point to a different material set than the oil-resistant compounds most plants keep on the shelf. Alkali service is where the ordinary rules change, so this guide explains the variables that actually decide the hose.

1. The Short Answer: Matching a Caustic Hose to NaOH and KOH

For most dilute alkaline and hot-water duties, an EPDM tube is the normal starting point. HENGHUA publishes a program of chemical hose for these duties, and publishes EPDM as its compound for hot water, steam up to +165 °C, brake fluid and dilute acids. The same call-out states plainly that EPDM is not for oils.

That is why alkali service is not a plain job for the oil-resistant compounds a plant may already stock. Where concentration, temperature or purity push past what EPDM is published to cover, polyolefin tubes such as UHMWPE, XLPE or polypropylene, and fluoropolymer tubes such as PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), FEP or PFA, become the options to compare.

Table 1. Compound options for caustic and alkali hose service

Compound

Coverage cited in this article

Role in NaOH and KOH service

EPDM

Hot water, steam up to +165 °C, brake fluid and dilute acids (HENGHUA published call-out)

Normal starting point for dilute alkaline and hot-water duty; not for oils

NBR

Mineral oils, diesel and hydraulic fluids (HENGHUA published call-out)

Oil-service compound; not the default for alkaline media

FKM (fluorocarbon)

High-temperature oils and aggressive chemicals up to +200 °C (HENGHUA published call-out)

For high temperature combined with aggressive chemical exposure

PTFE

Nearly all chemicals, −70 °C to +260 °C (HENGHUA published call-out)

Fluoropolymer option at the demanding end of alkali duty

Polyolefins: UHMWPE, XLPE, polypropylene

Generic compound family; no single per-product rating is claimed here

Considered with fluoropolymers where concentration, temperature or purity demand more

Fluoropolymers: FEP, PFA

Generic compound family; no single per-product rating is claimed here

Same role as PTFE where the service demands it

Two questions decide most alkali jobs. The first is whether the tube’s published coverage reaches your working temperature, not just your medium. The second is whether the hose can be flushed clean after the run. Answer both before you compare prices, because a cheaper tube that is not cleanable will cost more over a year of blocked lines and premature replacement.

2. Why Caustic Is Not Just Another Chemical

NaOH and KOH are both strongly alkaline, and that alone separates them from the acids and solvents handled elsewhere on site. Alkali attack on a polymer is not the same failure mode as acid attack, and a compound that performs well against one family tells you nothing about the other. Two practical habits follow. First, caustic is usually handled hot, so the hose sees a hot concentrated liquid rather than a cool dilute one. Second, the same alkali hangs up as a solid when it cools, so a hose that is not flushed can set hard inside.

That combination — hot, concentrated, and prone to solidifying on cooling — is what makes alkali service different for a caustic hose. A hose that survives the chemistry but cannot be cleaned will still fail, because the residue is the problem. A hose that is cleanable but softens at the working temperature will also fail. Selection therefore has to cover the tube compound, the temperature envelope and the cleaning routine together, and not one at a time.

Temperature is what tips the balance in most plants. A dilute alkali at ambient temperature is a far easier proposition than the same alkali concentrated and hot, and the two do not call for the same tube or the same end connection. The hose is often the last item on the line to be reviewed, even though it is the item that has to flex, bend and be replaced by hand.

A sodium hydroxide hose is not simply a potassium hydroxide hose with a different label. The two alkalis are handled at different strengths and see different cooling behavior on the same site, so the same physical layout can need two different tube compounds. Check the medium on the line before you reuse a specification from a neighboring unit.

What the hose has to do:

Survive the hot, concentrated end of the alkali range, not only the dilute end.

Stay cleanable, so a medium that sets hard on cooling cannot trap residue.

Match the wetted fitting and gasket, not just the tube compound.

Carry a rating that is quoted with its concentration and temperature.

3. Which Caustic Hose Compound Fits Dilute, Hot or Concentrated Service

NBR is the compound most plants reach for, because so much of a site runs on oils, diesel and hydraulic fluid. HENGHUA lists NBR for exactly those duties and lists EPDM as not for oils. The two compounds are aimed at opposite families, so a stock policy built around oil resistance leads the wrong way for caustic. For dilute alkaline and hot-water service, EPDM is the normal choice; HENGHUA publishes EPDM steam hose for saturated steam as one product in that family, with EPDM published up to +165 °C.

EPDM’s published call-out is dilute acids, hot water and steam, and in alkali service its role is the mild, dilute end. Concentrated, hot alkali is the case to verify against the specific product’s published conditions before you specify.

Where concentration, temperature or purity demand more than EPDM is published to cover, the tube moves to a polyolefin such as UHMWPE, XLPE or polypropylene, or to a fluoropolymer such as PTFE, FEP or PFA. PTFE is published for nearly all chemicals across −70 °C to +260 °C, which places it at the demanding end of alkali duty. A fluid compatibility chart for NBR, EPDM and FKM is a useful screening aid for this step.

Compound choice is a starting point, not a guarantee. The same family can be built into very different hoses depending on the reinforcement, the cover and the end connection, so a generic mention of EPDM or PTFE on a data sheet is not the whole story. Ask for the published conditions of the specific product, and check them against the medium, the concentration and the temperature on your line. That is the only way to know whether a given caustic hose is suited to a given duty.

A clear or see-through tube is a construction choice: it tells you how the wall is built, not what the compound is published to carry. A caustic clear hose is no exception, so check the compound and its published conditions, and read the transparency as a separate question.

Figure 1. Matching a caustic hose inner tube to dilute, hot or concentrated alkali duty.

4. Concentration and Temperature Move the Answer Together

A rating is only meaningful with the conditions it was measured at. A chemical-resistance chart is a screening aid, and its rating means something only together with the concentration, the temperature and the exposure time behind it. Immersion tests report volume swell, hardness change and tensile or elongation change; a chart does not. So a hose rated for one set of conditions does not carry that rating to a different concentration or a higher temperature.

Where a maker publishes a derating factor for a specific product, the derated working pressure is the rated pressure multiplied by that factor (calculated). That is the arithmetic to apply when a hose will run hotter than the condition its rating was published at. The published envelopes in Table 2 show how wide the spread can be between one standard and another, which is one more reason not to borrow a rating across conditions.

Two conditions, not one, drive the material. Raise the concentration and the same tube may no longer be suitable; raise the temperature and the same tube may lose working pressure. A caustic soda transfer line that is quoted at one pair of values therefore tells you nothing about a second pair, and the pump, the static head and the line size all sit inside the same calculation.

Keep concentration and temperature separate when you read a rating. A rating is published at a concentration and a temperature together, and it is the pair that carries. If you change the concentration but not the temperature, or the temperature but not the concentration, you have left the condition the rating was written for, and you need a new figure.

Table 2. Fittings, Flanges and Gaskets Are a Separate Decision

The hose tube and the end connection are two decisions, and caustic service treats them differently. A generic carbon-steel end is not the default answer here; caustic service commonly specifies stainless steel or a compatible alloy for the wetted end. The gasket between the flange faces is a third material in the same joint, and it has to be chosen for the same alkaline medium and temperature as the tube. An alkali hose that is sound in the tube can still leak at a joint built from the wrong alloy.

Where the assembly is a transfer hose governed by 33 CFR 154.500(d), connections must be full threaded, or flanges meeting ANSI B16.5 or B16.24, or quick-disconnect couplings meeting ASTM F1122. Those are the connection rules; they sit alongside, and do not replace, the material decision for the wetted parts. Write the fitting material, the flange standard and the gasket material onto the hose record with the tube compound.

Three parts to confirm at the joint:

The wetted material of the end connection, and whether it suits the alkali.

The flange standard or coupling type, checked against the governing rule.

The gasket material, selected for the same medium and temperature as the tube.

Figure 3. The end connection, flange and gasket are a separate material decision in alkali service.

6. Handling, Crystallization, Cleaning and the Hose Record

Hot caustic is a burn hazard, and a leak at a flange or a coupling is the exposure route that matters most. Treat every hot alkaline line as a burn risk and keep the hose route and the couplings where they can be seen. NaOH and KOH are not interchangeable: a sodium hydroxide hose and a potassium hydroxide hose carry different chemicals, and the dissolution behavior of each affects how the line is cleaned and drained.

Crystallization is the failure mode that catches people out. Alkali that is hot and liquid in the line sets as a solid when it cools, so a hose left full can block and the solid can be hard to move. Flush the line on a defined routine, drain it, and cap or store the hose so residue cannot dry inside. A caustic soda transfer line that is flushed on schedule will stay serviceable far longer than one left standing with residue in it.

Line cleaning is a design input, not an afterthought. If a hose cannot be drained and flushed, alkali residue will collect at the low points and at the couplings, where it cools first. Choose a hose that can be rinsed through, keep the run as short and as drainable as the layout allows, and write the routine down so it survives a shift change. The hose record is only useful if the flush history and the service conditions on it are current.

What to record on the hose record:

The medium, and whether it is NaOH or KOH.

The concentration range and the working temperature range.

The tube compound and the wetted fitting, flange and gasket materials.

The published pressure rating and the condition it was published at.

The flush interval, the flush medium and the last flush date.

The date of manufacture and the date of the latest test.

7. How to Specify a Caustic Hose: What the Supplier Must Be Told

A supplier cannot quote for alkali service from the words “caustic hose” alone. The medium, the concentration, the temperature range, the flow, whether the duty is suction or discharge, and the cleaning regime are the inputs that decide the tube, the reinforcement and the end connection. Give all six in writing, and ask for the published coverage of the proposed tube against your conditions rather than a single headline rating.

Suction and discharge are not the same duty, and the answer is not always one hose. A suction line has to hold its shape against vacuum, and full vacuum is a specific figure: 29.9 inHg, which equals 1.013 bar or 760 mmHg. A discharge line has to hold working pressure. Where a plant runs both duties on the same route, a suction and discharge hose may cover it, but state both duties so the supplier can check.

For a discharge duty, one product to compare is a suction and discharge hose rated 150 psi, which HENGHUA publishes within its chemical range. Ask your supplier to state the compound, the end connection and the published conditions on the quotation, so the offer can be checked against this list. If a duty falls outside the published range, say so early rather than accept a rating that was written for a different condition. To move forward, contact HENGHUA with the six inputs in Table 4.

Table 4. The difference matters because alkali service is usually hot, concentrated and prone to crystallizing when it cools. A general chemical hose may cover the chemistry and still be the wrong choice if it is not cleanable or not published for your working temperature. Match the published coverage to your conditions before you order.

Why is EPDM used for caustic when it is not oil resistant?

Alkali and oil are opposite families of media. HENGHUA publishes EPDM for hot water, steam up to +165 °C, brake fluid and dilute acids, and states that it is not for oils. NBR covers oils, diesel and hydraulic fluids. Choosing by oil resistance therefore leads away from the alkali answer. For dilute alkaline and hot-water service, EPDM is the normal starting compound.

When would you move to a fluoropolymer?

When concentration, temperature or purity is beyond what EPDM is published to cover. PTFE is published for nearly all chemicals across −70 °C to +260 °C, which places it at the demanding end of alkali duty. FEP and PFA are fluoropolymer alternatives in the same family. Move up only when your conditions require it, because the higher-performing tube usually costs more and is stiffer to route.

Does a rating at one concentration carry to another?

No. A chemical-resistance rating means something only together with the concentration, the temperature and the exposure time it was measured at. Immersion tests report volume swell, hardness change and tensile or elongation change, but a printed chart does not carry those details. Do not move a hose from one service condition to another on the strength of a single headline rating.

Why do fittings matter as much as the tube?

The wetted end connection sees the same alkali as the tube. A generic carbon-steel fitting is not the default answer for caustic service; stainless steel or a compatible alloy is commonly specified. The gasket between flange faces is a separate material choice for the same medium and temperature. Where a hose is covered by 33 CFR 154.500(d), the connection must meet the listed threaded, flange or coupling requirements.

Is NaOH service different from KOH service?

Yes. NaOH is caustic soda and KOH is potassium hydroxide, also called potash lye. They are different chemicals with different dissolution behavior, so a procedure written for one is not automatically valid for the other. A sodium hydroxide hose and a potassium hydroxide hose should each be checked against the medium the line carries before you match either to a hose record.

Does caustic soda transfer need a suction hose or a discharge hose?

It depends on the duty. A suction line has to resist collapse under vacuum; full vacuum equals 29.9 inHg, 1.013 bar or 760 mmHg. A discharge line has to hold working pressure. Tell the supplier which duty applies and give the working pressure, because reinforcement and construction differ between the two, and many plants use a suction and discharge hose where both duties occur.

How should the hose be cleaned after caustic service?

Define a flush routine and follow it. Alkali that is hot and liquid in the line sets as a solid when it cools, so a hose left full can block and the solid can be hard to move. Flush the line, drain it, and cap or store the hose so residue cannot dry inside. Record the flush interval, the flush medium and the last flush date on the hose record.

What temperatures can these hoses handle?

It depends on the compound and the construction, so there is no single answer. HENGHUA publishes EPDM for steam up to +165 °C and PTFE across −70 °C to +260 °C, and the composite hose standard EN 13765:2018 covers −30 °C to +150 °C. Those are different products under different conditions. Ask for the published envelope of the specific hose at your concentration and temperature.

What pressure rating should a hose carry in caustic service?

Start from the duty. HENGHUA publishes chemical suction and discharge hose at 150 psi and 250 psi, and chemical discharge hose at 150 psi, with a 4:1 design safety factor across the range. For a transfer hose under 33 CFR 154.500(a), the minimum design burst pressure must be at least four times the relief-valve setting or maximum pump pressure, plus static head. Confirm which rule governs your line.

Do a distributor, a plant operator and a project contractor need the same tube and compounds?

Yes, in the tube and the compounds; no, in what each has to record. A distributor standardizing a stock range needs the compounds whose published conditions cover the widest band. A plant operator running one transfer line needs the compound matched to that line’s concentration and temperature, plus a flush routine. A project contractor specifying a new unit needs the six specification inputs in Table 4 written into the requisition, so the fitting and gasket are quoted with the tube.

About HENGHUA

HENGHUA is a hose manufacturer supplying distributors, chemical plant operators, EPC contractors and tank-terminal operators.
