SAE Hydraulic Fittings
SAE Hydraulic Fittings: JIC, ORFS, ORB & Flange Standards
SAE hydraulic fittings are the American connection family: four SAE standards cover nearly every hydraulic port on US-built machinery. JIC 37° flare (SAE J514), ORFS O-ring face seal (SAE J1453), O-ring boss (SAE J1926), and 4-bolt flanges (SAE J518) each seal differently and are never interchangeable. This page is the complete guide to our SAE hydraulic fittings range: family-by-family sealing principles, thread charts for ORFS and ORB, matching hose-side series, installation rules, and ordering terms. Identify your SAE family from the tables, then request a quote in minutes.

What Are SAE Hydraulic Fittings?
SAE hydraulic fittings are threaded or flanged connectors built to standards published by SAE International, the engineering body behind most North American hydraulic interfaces. Each SAE standard defines its own thread and its own sealing method, and the families look similar enough that misidentification is the most common cause of wrong orders.
| SAE Family | Стандартный | How It Seals | Typical Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Вспышка JIC 37° | SAE J514 / ISO 8434-2 | Metal-to-metal 37° flare seat | General industrial and mobile |
| ORFS | SAE J1453 | O-ring on a flat face | Zero-leak, high-pressure |
| O-ring boss (ORB) | SAE J1926 / ISO 11926 | Уплотнительное кольцо на торцевом отверстии | Ports on pumps, valves, motors |
| 4-bolt flange | SAE J518 / ISO 6162 | O-ring face, clamped by 4 screws | Large bores, high pressure |
Core value: identify the SAE family first — the thread can look the same while the seal method makes the connection incompatible.
Три пути взаимодействия с клиентами:
- Для производителей оригинального оборудования (OEM) — standardize on one SAE family per circuit and lock in repeatable assembly quality.
- Для конечных пользователей и служб технического обслуживания — identify whether the failed connection is JIC, ORFS, ORB, or flange, then order the right replacement the first time.
- Для дистрибьюторов — consolidate all four SAE families in one catalog, with mixed-size sample kits and private labeling.
Основные технические характеристики
ORFS Fittings (SAE J1453)
ORFS, or O-ring face seal, is the zero-leak member of the SAE family: an O-ring sits in a groove on the flat face of the male end, and a threaded union compresses it against the matching flat face. No flare, no taper, no sealant — the seal is positive and survives high pressure and vibration. ORFS hydraulic fittings in the common sizes:
| Dash | Thread | Typical Service |
|---|---|---|
| -04 | 9/16-18 UNF | Up to about 400 bar |
| -06 | 11/16-16 UN | Up to about 400 bar |
| -08 | 13/16-16 UN | Up to about 400 bar |
| -10 | 1-14 UNS | Up to about 400 bar |
| -12 | 1-3/16-12 UN | Up to about 400 bar |
| -16 | 1-7/16-12 UN | Up to about 315 bar |
| -20 | 1-11/16-12 UN | Up to about 250 bar |
| -24 | 2-12 UN | Confirm per size |
Ratings follow common industry practice and decline with size; we confirm the exact value for your configuration. See our separate ORFS detail page for the full range on request.
SAE O-Ring Boss Fittings (SAE J1926)
ORB, or O-ring boss, is the standard port connection on SAE pumps, valves, and motors: a straight thread with the O-ring seated under the hex, sealing against the spotfaced port. The threads only clamp the joint; the O-ring does the sealing. SAE O-ring boss fittings in the common sizes:
| Dash | Thread | Typical Service |
|---|---|---|
| -04 | 9/16-18 UNF | Up to about 6,000 psi |
| -06 | 11/16-16 UN | Up to about 6,000 psi |
| -08 | 13/16-16 UN | Up to about 6,000 psi |
| -10 | 1-14 UNS | Up to about 5,000 psi |
| -12 | 1-3/16-12 UN | Up to about 5,000 psi |
| -16 | 1-7/16-12 UN | Up to about 5,000 psi |
| -20 | 1-11/16-12 UN | Up to about 4,000 psi |
| -24 | 2-12 UN | Confirm per size |
Ratings follow common industry practice; confirm the exact value for your configuration and seal compound.
JIC 37° Flare Fittings (SAE J514)
JIC fittings seal metal-to-metal on a 37° flare cone with straight UNF threads. They are the workhorse of North American hydraulics, covered in full on our dedicated JIC page, including the complete SAE J514 dash and thread chart from -04 to -32.
SAE 4-Bolt Flange Fittings (SAE J518)
SAE flange fittings seal with an O-ring in the flange head face, clamped by a split flange and four screws. Code 61 is rated 3,000 to 5,000 psi by size; Code 62 is rated 6,000 psi. Full size and code charts are on our dedicated flange page.
Hose-Side: Matching Ferrule Series
The hose end of our SAE hydraulic fittings is matched to a hose family and ferrule series. The table below lists the full crimp-side range, dash 03 to 32 (DN 4 to 50).
| Series | Hose Family | Стандартный | Dash | Crimp Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 00110-A / 00110 | 1SN | SAE 100 R1AT / EN 853 | 03–32 | No-skive |
| 03310 / 00200 | 2SN | SAE 100 R2AT / EN 853 | 03–32 | No-skive |
| 00210 | 2SN | DIN 20022 | 03–32 | No-skive |
| 00400 | 4SP / 4SH | EN 856 | 04–32 | One-piece |
| 00400 / 01400 | R12 | SAE 100 R12 | 06–24 | One-piece |
| 00018 | R7 thermoplastic | SAE 100 R7 | 03–12 | No-skive |
| 00TF0 / 00710 | PTFE (Teflon) | Per hose maker | 03–32 | One-piece |
Assembly working pressure follows the hose family and the connection type, whichever is lower. Confirm the final value against your hose data sheet and our engineers.

Обжим и монтаж
The hose end of every SAE fitting is crimped with standard hydraulic crimping machines and common die sets. We provide reference crimp data and die selection for your machine model with every order.
Crimp-side steps:
- Cut the hose square.
- Prepare the hose end per the maker’s instructions; skive where required (4SH, R12).
- Insert the stem fully into the hose bore.
- Slide the ferrule on and seat it against the stem shoulder.
- Crimp with a hydraulic hose crimping machine to the target crimp diameter from the hose maker’s chart.
- Verify the crimp O.D. with a caliper and record the value.
SAE connection-side rules:
- Identify the family before assembly: a 37° flare seat, an O-ring face, an O-ring boss, or a flange face each needs its own mating part.
- JIC and ORB threads can share the same size (both 9/16-18 at -04) yet never interchange — the seals are different.
- For ORB, seat the O-ring fully past the threads before tightening; the port face must be clean.
- For ORFS, keep the face O-ring free of dirt; a scratched face or damaged O-ring leaks.
- For flange connections, tighten the four screws in a cross pattern, in two passes.
Nomenclature: Reading the SAE Standards
Every SAE connection is described by its J-number standard, its family name, and its dash size. Learn these fields and you can read any SAE description:
| Поле | Значение | Пример |
|---|---|---|
| J-number | The SAE standard that defines the geometry | SAE J1926 = ORB |
| Family | The common name | ORFS, ORB, JIC, flange |
| Dash | Nominal size in 1/16 in steps | Dash -08 |
| Configuration | Straight or angled | 90° elbow |
A typical description reads: -08 ORFS male x 3/4 in hose, straight. We assign the exact part number for your configuration on request — send the SAE family, thread, hose family, and dash, and our engineers confirm the code before you order.
Matching and Identification
SAE families are identified by their sealing surface. Use this table as the first filter:
| Connection | Thread | Sealing Surface | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| JIC (SAE J514) | Straight UNF | 37° flare cone | Cone on the male end |
| ORFS (SAE J1453) | Straight UN | Flat face + O-ring groove | O-ring visible on the face |
| ORB (SAE J1926) | Straight UN | O-ring under hex shoulder | Port has a spotface |
| SAE flange (SAE J518) | None | Flange face + O-ring | Four-bolt pattern |
| 45° flare (SAE J512) | Straight | 45° cone | Low-pressure automotive |
The 45° flare system per SAE J512 is for low-pressure automotive and refrigeration service, not for high-pressure hydraulics. If you cannot identify the SAE fittings by inspection, send photos with a ruler in the frame and we identify the family, size, and matching set free of charge.

SAE Hydraulic Fittings FAQ
Can JIC and ORFS fittings be interchanged? No. They can share similar straight threads, but JIC seals on a 37° flare cone and ORFS seals on an O-ring face. A JIC male will not seal in an ORFS port and vice versa; forcing them causes leakage or thread damage.
What is the difference between ORB and ORFS? Both use O-rings with straight threads. ORB (SAE J1926) carries the O-ring under the hex shoulder and seals against a spotfaced port. ORFS (SAE J1453) carries the O-ring in the flat face of the fitting and seals against a matching flat face.
How do I confirm an SAE fitting matches my hose? Three checks: confirm the SAE family and thread against the port, match the dash size to the hose I.D., and confirm the hose construction against the ferrule series table. Send us both measurements and we verify the full part number.
Carbon steel or stainless steel — which do I need? Zinc-plated carbon steel suits standard service in most SAE hydraulic fittings applications. Stainless steel SAE fittings suit corrosive chemicals, offshore, food, and hygienic environments. Brass is not typical for high-pressure SAE hydraulic service.
What does SAE J1926 mean? J1926 is the SAE standard for straight-thread O-ring boss ports and studs, published in metric form as ISO 11926. It defines the thread sizes, O-ring grooves, and port dimensions for ORB connections.
What pressure can ORFS fittings handle? ORFS fittings are typically rated up to about 400 bar in the smaller sizes, declining with size. Confirm the exact rating for your dash size and material with our engineers.
Why choose SAE instead of metric or BSP fittings? Choose the system that matches your equipment: SAE-standard connections dominate US-built machines, while metric 24° cone and BSP systems dominate European and Asian builds. The systems are not interchangeable, so match the port you have.
