When a supplier writes “Teflon chemical hose” on a label, the wetted liner may be PTFE, FEP, PFA or another member of the same family. Those materials share broad chemical inertness, but they differ in temperature ceiling, flexibility and optical clarity.

That distinction matters at the buying stage. Two hoses marketed under the same familiar name can carry different temperature ratings, and the difference decides whether a line survives a hot flush. Ask the supplier to name the specific liner polymer, not the family, and to put that name on the datasheet and the invoice.

A Teflon chemical hose is normally built as a thin extruded liner, a stainless steel braid, and an outer cover or open braid. The liner carries the chemistry, the braid carries the pressure, and the cover protects both. Each layer can be specified separately, which is why the same nominal product can be sold at very different ratings.

Confusion also arises because the term is used loosely for anything with a fluoropolymer liner. A hose with a rubber jacket and an FEP-lined hose behave differently at temperature, even when both are sold as chemical hose. Read the liner polymer first, then read the jacket, then read the braid.

FEP vs PTFE: How Do the Two Liners Compare on Specs?

The two polymers are close relatives with one structural difference that drives most of the practical divergence. Table 1 sets out the comparison as suppliers generally publish it.

Table 1. FEP and PTFE liners compared on temperature ceiling, optical clarity and flexibility.

Temperature decides the liner first. If the line runs steadily at or above the FEP ceiling of about +204 °C, PTFE is the only practical choice of the two. If it runs cooler and the process benefits from seeing the product, an FEP hose is easier to work with and usually cheaper to build.

Choose on routing second. An fep hose bends to a smaller radius at the same bore, which helps inside skids and around equipment. A ptfe hose holds a straighter path and resists collapse better, which helps on long runs and where the line must drain fully.

Choose on observation third. A semi-transparent liner lets an operator confirm flow, spot entrained air and catch colour changes without breaking the line. That is a genuine operational benefit on pilot plants, dosing lines and laboratory rigs, and it is the single strongest argument for an fep hose where temperature permits.

How Do You Read the Temperature and Pressure Envelope on a Datasheet?

A temperature rating and a pressure rating are separate promises, and neither is valid outside the conditions the supplier used to measure it. Braided fluoropolymer hose is often quoted at ambient conditions, with a progressive reduction as temperature climbs.

Read the two figures together. Table 2 shows what each field on a fluoropolymer datasheet is actually telling you.

Table 2. How to read the ratings on a fluoropolymer hose datasheet

Field

Meaning

Question to Ask

Temperature rating

Limits within which the liner and braid stay serviceable

Does the full rating still apply at the top of this range?

Pressure rating

Continuous pressure at a stated reference temperature

What is the derated figure at my working temperature?

Burst pressure

Failure pressure in test, used to set the safety factor

Never a service limit in its own right

Minimum bend radius

Tightest bend that avoids kinking and braid stress

Does the installed route stay above it when hot?

Vacuum rating

Negative pressure the construction resists

Is suction or full drain-down part of the duty?

Heat reduces the strength of both the polymer and the braid, so a Teflon chemical hose rated at its highest pressure when cold is not rated at that pressure when hot. Ask for the derated figure in writing at your real operating temperature, and do not accept an ambient number as a substitute.

The rating also depends on the assembly, not just the hose body. A crimped coupling that is weaker than the hose becomes the limiting item, and the published rating should describe the finished assembly rather than the tube alone. Where a supplier quotes only a tube rating, treat the assembly rating as unknown until confirmed.

Buyers often treat a rating as a target to beat, and the two ways of getting it wrong are not symmetrical. A liner specified above the duty costs more and then behaves; one specified at the average duty looks cheaper until the line is run at its peak. In our experience the second mistake is the one that reaches the maintenance log. Where the duty varies, write down the normal and the peak condition and let the supplier place the rating against them.

How Does Bore Profile Change Flow, Flexibility and Cleanability?

The bore profile changes flow, drainage and cleaning more than most buyers expect. Two hoses with the same inside diameter and the same liner can behave quite differently once the profile differs.

A straight bore gives the lowest pressure loss for a given diameter and drains completely when the line is emptied. It also cleans easily, because there is no crevice for residue to collect in. Where the duty involves product changeovers or hygienic service, a smooth bore is usually the correct default.

A corrugated liner trades some of that flow for flexibility. The corrugations allow a much smaller bend radius, which helps where space is tight, and they absorb movement in a line that flexes in service. The cost is a higher pressure drop, a harder cleaning task and a small volume of liquid that stays in the troughs when the line is drained.

Choose the profile from the installation rather than from the catalogue. Where the route is short and fixed, the straight profile is nearly always better. Where the hose must flex repeatedly, follow a tight path, or connect two points that move relative to one another, a convoluted construction earns its penalty.

Figure 3. Smooth bore and corrugated fluoropolymer hose profiles, compared on flow, drainage and minimum bend radius.

Chemical Compatibility: How to Check Before You Buy

Chemical compatibility is the match between the wetted materials and the medium, and it must be checked at the concentration, temperature and mixture you actually run. A material that passes at ambient temperature may fail in a hot, concentrated version of the same fluid.

Start with the supplier’s compatibility table and find your fluid by name. Then work through three checks.

Grade and concentration — the same chemical at two different concentrations can sit on opposite sides of the recommendation for a given polymer, so a table that lists only one concentration is not enough to decide a purchase.

Temperature — most published chemical compatibility ratings assume an ambient reference condition. Where your process runs hot, ask the supplier to confirm the rating at that temperature, because both the polymer and the elastomer seals lose resistance as heat rises.

Mixture — real plant streams are rarely a single chemical, and a solvent mixed with an acid can attack materials that handle each alone. Where the stream is a mixture, describe the full composition to the supplier and ask for a written recommendation rather than extrapolating from two single-fluid ratings.

For a worked example on one specific medium, the PTFE hose guide for hydrochloric acid service follows the same checks back from the fluid. Finally, look beyond the liner: gaskets, O-rings, thread sealants and any wetted metal all sit in the same fluid. A perfectly inert liner paired with the wrong gasket still leaks, and the failure will look like a liner problem even though it started at the seal.

Which Standards and Declarations Apply to Fluoropolymer Hose?

Fluoropolymer hose sits across several standards, and knowing which one applies keeps a specification honest. SAE 100R14 describes a PTFE-lined hose with a stainless steel braid, and it is the reference most North American buyers recognise for fluoropolymer hose. Datasheets for that PTFE-lined construction commonly quote a working range of either −54 °C to +204 °C or −60 °C to +260 °C, and the exact limit must come from the datasheet for the assembly you buy.

For chemical service in Europe, EN 12115 is the relevant chemical hose standard, but it covers rubber and thermoplastic hoses rather than multilayer composite constructions. The standard defines two types and four electrical grades, and the full detail of that structure is set out in our guide to the EN 12115 chemical hose standard.

Food and pharmaceutical duty adds its own declarations. A food grade hose is normally supported by a statement of compliance to FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 for the fluoropolymer, and pharmaceutical users often ask for USP Class VI documentation. These are declarations the supplier must be able to produce in writing; a datasheet that claims suitability without naming the reference is not evidence.

Where the line runs in a classified area, electrical properties also come into scope. Antistatic and conductive grades are defined by resistance limits and measured to a published method, and the required grade follows from the area classification rather than from personal preference.

Where Is a Teflon Chemical Hose Used?

Fluoropolymer-lined hose appears wherever the medium would attack ordinary rubber or metal, and where cleanliness matters as much as resistance. Three sectors account for most of the volume.

Chemical Processing

Reactor charging, sampling, additive dosing and transfer between vessels all use PTFE-lined hose because the medium is aggressive and the line is frequently reconnected. A ptfe hose is the default where temperature is high, and the liner is chosen so that one hose can serve several products without cross-contamination.

Pharmaceutical and Food

Here the requirement is cleanliness plus inertness. A food grade liner does not react with the product, does not shed particles and can be cleaned in place or flushed between batches. This construction dominates in hygienic service, and documentation of the wetted materials is part of the batch record rather than an optional extra.

Semiconductor and Laboratory

High-purity lines need a liner that releases nothing into the product stream. FEP is common because the semi-transparent wall lets an operator confirm flow and spot bubbles, and because a smaller bend radius fits packed equipment. Laboratory rigs often standardise on one liner family so that fittings, gaskets and cleaning procedures stay consistent.

Which Fittings and End Connections Suit Fluoropolymer Hose?

On a Teflon chemical hose, the connection decides whether the assembly performs to its rating. Fluoropolymer hose is normally supplied with crimped couplings, but reusable fittings remain useful where a line is assembled in the field.

Table 3 lists the common families and where each is normally found.

Table 3. End connections for a Teflon chemical hose

Connection

Typical Wetted Material

Common Use

Note

JIC 37° flare

Stainless steel

General chemical and hydraulic-adjacent lines

Flare seat must be undamaged to seal

Camlock coupling

Polypropylene or lined metal

Frequent connect and disconnect

Gasket material must match the medium

Flanged end

Lined steel or PVDF

Fixed plant piping, larger bore

Liner must seal across the flange face

Sanitary clamp

PTFE or PVDF

Hygienic and clean service

Do not over-tighten and crush the liner

Reusable fitting

Stainless steel

Field assembly and repair of long runs

Re-torque to the maker’s figure after service

A crimped fitting is generally stronger and more repeatable than a reusable one, because the crimp is set on a machine to a controlled diameter. The trade-off is that a damaged crimp cannot be field-repaired, so the assembly must be rebuilt. Where the line is long and expensive, keep one spare assembly rather than relying on a field repair.

How to Specify a Teflon Chemical Hose

A specification is what makes two quotations and their price comparable. Give the following fields and a supplier can quote the correct liner, braid and end connection rather than a generic hose.

Liner polymer — name PTFE or FEP, not the family name alone.

Medium, concentration and mixture — list every component of the stream, not only the main one.

Continuous and peak temperature — the higher figure governs the pressure rating.

Continuous and peak pressure — include surge where a positive displacement pump is involved.

Duty — pressure only, suction only, or both, since suction adds a vacuum requirement.

Bore, length and bore profile — inside diameter in millimetres or inches, using the mm to inches conversion chart when supplier conventions differ, overall length, and the bore profile.

End connections — type, size, wetted material and the thread or flange standard at each end.

Environment and documentation — indoor or outdoor service, wash-down chemicals, and the certificates or declarations you must retain.

Then confirm the derated figures. Ask the supplier to state the temperature rating and the derated pressure as they apply at your operating temperature, and to confirm any electrical or food contact declaration in writing. Ask also for the lead time on a bulk order and the minimum quantity before you commit. Keep that reply with the purchase order, because it is the only document that will settle a dispute later.

Replace, never repair. A fluoropolymer liner that has been permeated, blistered, discoloured or creased at a coupling is finished, and no amount of re-crimping restores it. Braid with broken or corroded wires, a coupling with a damaged sealing face, and any hose that has been kinked below its minimum bend radius are all stop-use conditions. Tag the assembly out of service, drain and neutralise it, and destroy it so that it cannot re-enter the plant.

Teflon Chemical Hose FAQs

Is FEP as chemically resistant as PTFE?

For most plant media, yes. The two polymers share nearly the same resistance to acids, bases and solvents, and either will usually handle a given chemical stream. The practical difference appears at temperature, where PTFE keeps working well above the point at which FEP must be derated or replaced. Treat the choice as a temperature decision first and a chemistry decision second.

Which liner should I choose for a line that runs above the FEP ceiling?

PTFE. A continuous duty at that temperature sits above the practical ceiling for FEP, so an FEP-lined hose would lose strength and service life quickly. PTFE retains useful properties to about +260 °C, which leaves a working margin. Ask the supplier to confirm in writing the pressure your own service conditions allow, because an ambient figure will not hold at that temperature.

Why is my braid corroding when the liner is intact?

Because vapour is migrating through the liner wall and attacking the wire from inside the jacket. The liner has not failed in the sense of leaking liquid, but it is thin enough to pass a small amount of vapour at your operating temperature. A thicker liner, a lower running temperature or a vented cover will reduce the effect. Inspect the braid at every service interval.

Can I use a food grade liner for solvents as well as for product?

Often yes, provided the liner polymer suits both and the supplier confirms the exposure. A food grade declaration covers what the material releases into product, not what it resists chemically. Ask for a chemical compatibility statement for the solvent in addition to the food contact declaration, because the two documents answer different questions.

Do I need antistatic hose for a chemical line?

Only where the area classification or the site assessment requires it. Static builds up when a non-conductive fluid moves through a non-conductive liner, and the risk depends on conductivity, flow velocity and the surrounding atmosphere. Where a grade is required, specify it explicitly and confirm the resistance limits and the test method rather than assuming any black hose will do.

What is the difference between a corrugated and a smooth bore liner in practice?

A smooth bore gives lower pressure loss and cleans more completely, which suits fixed routes and hygienic duty. A corrugated liner bends much more tightly and absorbs movement, at the cost of pressure drop and a small retained volume. Decide on three checks: does the line stay fixed, must it drain dry, and does it flex in service? A fixed line that must drain points to smooth bore; a line that flexes with equipment movement points to corrugated.

How long does a bulk order usually take?

Lead time depends on bore, liner polymer, end connections and whether the fittings must be machined to a non-standard pattern. Standard bores with crimped stainless steel fittings move fastest; special liners and large flanged ends take longer. For a bulk order, give the supplier the full specification up front, because a quotation built on an incomplete description will be revised later and the price will move with it.

Source Teflon Chemical Hose by Specification

Two quotations only compare on price when both describe the same liner, the same braid and the same end connections at the same temperature.
