The same construction in a compressed-air line is a braided air hose, and that is the version most buyers are looking for. The braid is what converts a soft tube into a pressure-carrying line: it takes the hoop stress, resists kinking, and extends service life under flexing. Choosing correctly means matching the reinforcement material to the pressure, temperature, and chemical exposure, then matching the fittings to the hose’s construction.

If you are choosing a braided hose, this guide answers what decides it: which reinforcement material to use, how braid and spiral differ, which fittings terminate braided hose, what each type suits, and which failures signal the wrong braid.

About a 15-minute read at 250 words per minute; rated ranges follow ISO 5774:2023, ISO 2398:2024.

What Is a Braided Hose?

Three layers define a braided hose. The tube carries the medium and must be chemically compatible with it. The braid carries the pressure load and is the layer that gives the hose its strength. The cover protects the braid from abrasion, UV, and chemical attack. If you are still deciding whether a reinforced hose is the right product at all, start with what an air hose is.

Some braided hoses are sold uncovered so the braid is visible — common on stainless-steel-braided water and fuel lines, where the woven surface is part of the product’s function and appearance. Industrial air and hydraulic braided hose almost always carries a cover, because exposed braid abrades quickly against workshop surfaces.

Note the terminology trap: “braided” describes the reinforcement geometry, not the material. A braided air hose and a braided hydraulic hose can look similar and be engineered for entirely different pressures.

What the Braid Actually Does

The braid performs four jobs at once, and understanding them explains most selection mistakes.

Carries hoop stress. Internal pressure tries to expand the tube. The braid’s filaments resist that expansion in tension. Burst pressure is largely a function of reinforcement material, filament count, and braid angle.

Sets the bend radius. A tighter braid limits how far the hose can bend before the tube collapses. This is why braided hose resists kinking better than unreinforced tubing.

Constrains length change. Unreinforced hose shortens and lengthens noticeably under pressure. A braid locks the length, which matters in fixed installations.

Protects the tube from outside. Steel overbraid in particular acts as armor against impact and abrasion.

The braid angle matters more than most buyers realize

The optimal angle for a pressure-carrying braid is about 54°44′ to the hose axis — the neutral angle at which the braid neither expands nor contracts the hose under pressure. Manufacturers braid close to that angle for pressure hose.

Away from it, behavior changes measurably. A shallower angle (closer to the axis) gives more length change under pressure but easier bending. A steeper angle gives a stiffer hose with better length stability. This is why two hoses with the same burst rating can feel completely different to handle.

The Four Reinforcement Materials

Four reinforcement materials cover nearly every braided hose sold. They differ in pressure capability, weight, fatigue behavior, and cost, and they are not interchangeable. For the tube compounds and covers either side of the braid, see フレキシブルホースの材質.

Table 1. Reinforcement material comparison. Ratings are typical ranges for the reinforcement material class — the finished hose rating also depends on tube, braid layers, and end fittings.

Reinforcement material

Typical use

Pressure capability

Strengths

Limits

Polyester textile yarn

Air hose, water hose, light-duty lines

200–300 PSI working

Light, cheap, flexible, will not rust

Lowest pressure ceiling; degrades with heat over time

Nylon, high-tenacity

Air hose, PU hose, medium-duty

250–400 PSI working

Tougher than polyester, good fatigue life

Absorbs moisture; rating drops when wet in some designs

High-tensile synthetic spiral

Higher-pressure air and general industrial

400–1,000 PSI working

Much higher rating than braid at similar weight

Stiffer; needs larger bend radius

Stainless steel wire (1 or 2 layers)

Hydraulic hose, high-pressure air, fuel lines

1,000–5,000+ PSI working

Highest pressure, heat tolerance, abrasion armor

Heavy, costly, can fatigue if routed badly

Two practical notes. First, braid layers multiply capability: a two-wire braid is not twice as strong as one wire, but it is substantially stronger and stiffer. Second, wire braid and rubber tube are usually a system. A wire-braided hydraulic hose is built to a named standard, so mixing a wire braid with an unbonded tube is a factory decision, not a field one. That is why a stainless steel braided hose is quoted as an assembly rather than as a length of hose: the rating belongs to the combination of wire, tube, and crimp, not to any single layer.

Figure 1. Braid versus spiral geometry in the same hose size: in a braid the yarn groups cross over and under one another, while spiral winds them in one direction in alternating layers. That is why braid vs spiral changes pressure, bend radius and cost.

If your application runs at 200 PSI, braid is enough. If it runs at 1,000 PSI and cycles thousands of times, spiral reinforcement is not an upgrade — it is a requirement.

Braided Air Hose: The Most Common Use

For most buyers asking about a braided hose, the product they need is a braided air hose. Textile-braided air hose typically runs 200 to 300 PSI working pressure and is the workhorse of garages, workshops, and production floors because the braid keeps the tube from kinking while staying light enough to handle. For the same decision across the other common constructions, see PVC vs rubber vs hybrid air hose.

Three things to know before buying a braided air hose:

Match bore to tool demand, not to fitting size. A 1/4-inch braided air hose loses enough pressure over 50 feet to starve an impact wrench, even though the fittings are the same size.

Textile braid does not improve abrasion resistance. The cover does that. If the hose drags on concrete, you need a heavier cover, not a tighter braid.

Textile braid is not the same as wire braid. A stainless steel braided air hose is a different product with a different weight, feel, and price. It is chosen for hot, abrasive, or high-pressure environments.

Put numbers on the sizing question. At a 100 PSI inlet, a 1/4-inch bore passes roughly 40 SCFM, a 3/8-inch bore roughly 80 SCFM, and a 1/2-inch bore roughly 140 SCFM at a reference condition of 23 °C / 73 °F. An impact wrench rated at 4 to 8 SCFM is comfortable on 3/8 inch, and the エアホースのサイズ表 lists the matching bore for common tools.

A 1/4-inch line long enough to add meaningful pressure drop will leave an impact wrench short of its rated 90 PSI. Choose the bore for the tool’s consumption, not for the port thread, and keep the run short.

Braided Hose Fittings

A braid only performs if the fittings transfer its load. Four termination families cover almost every braided hose fitting on the market:

Barbed fittings — pushed into the tube and secured with a ferrule or clamp. Common on low-pressure air and water hose. Simple, repairable in the field, limited by the clamp’s grip.

Crimped fittings — swaged onto the hose with a die. This is the factory standard for hydraulic and high-pressure air hose. The crimp compresses the braid, so it is permanent and the strongest option.

Reusable fittings — screwed onto the hose and re-tightened as needed. Useful for field repair; heavier, and only valid up to the pressure class the fitting is rated for.

JIC, BSP, and NPT threaded ends — the connection standard at the port. Thread type must match the equipment, and mismatched threads tightened hard will leak or crack the port.

Two rules that save money:

Never fit a crimped wire-braided hose with a field-installed barb and clamp. The clamp grips the cover, not the braid, so the pressure rating collapses to whatever the cover can hold.

Keep fitting material compatible with the tube. Brass with textile-braided air hose is standard; stainless with stainless overbraided lines avoids galvanic corrosion. A stainless steel braided hose is normally supplied as a finished assembly for the same reason.

Matching the fitting to the pressure class

The fitting and the braid have to be rated together: a braided hose fitting that only seals the tube without gripping the braid will pull apart before the hose reaches its rating. Three matches decide the assembly’s real class:

Match the end method to the class. Barbed ends suit the lowest class, crimped ends above that, reusable ends for field repair within their class.

Match the material to the medium. Brass suits textile braid; a dissimilar pair invites galvanic corrosion.

Match the thread to the port. Thread form is a measurement.

Braided Air Hose by Application

Table 3. A 3/8-inch textile-braided hose at 200 to 300 PSI handles general workshop air. A two-wire-braid hose at 1,000 PSI and above handles compressed-gas rigs and mobile hydraulics. A stainless overbraid on PTFE handles brake, clutch, and hot lines. Hybrid constructions sit between those cases, and what a hybrid air hose is explains when a mixed compound is the better answer.

How to Choose a Braided Hose in Five Steps

These five steps apply to any reinforced hose, not only to braided construction, and they run in order of how expensive each mistake is. For the wider category, how to choose an air hose sets out the same decisions with the material options side by side:

State the medium. Air, water, oil, fuel, steam, or food product — this selects the tube compound before anything else.

State the working pressure and the peak. Size the braid to the peak, not the average. Keep the system’s normal pressure well under the hose’s working rating.

State the temperature range. Extreme heat is what kills textile braid first; extreme cold is what stiffens the cover.

State the bend radius available. Measure the tightest bend the installation demands and compare it to the hose’s published minimum. A hose forced below its radius will fail at the fitting.

Confirm the end connections. Thread type, size, and fitting style must be confirmed by measurement, not by eye.

Choosing the connection before the braid

A braided hose fitting has to transfer the braid’s load, not merely seal the tube. Whether the hose ends in a crimped ferrule, a reusable end fitting, or a machined stainless steel end, the connection is as consequential as the reinforcement itself. That is why the sequence is always the same: settle the medium and pressure, compare braid vs spiral construction, and only then specify the fitting.

A worked example

A workshop asks for 50-foot air lines to run 1/2-inch impact wrenches at 90 PSI. The medium is compressed air, so the tube is oil-resistant rubber or polyurethane. The system peaks at the 120 to 150 PSI compressor cut-out, so a textile-braided hose rated 200 to 300 PSI has margin.

This installation allows a 6-inch bend radius, and the ports are 1/4-inch NPT. The braid is not the limiting item here — the bore is. A 50-foot 1/4-inch line starves a 1/2-inch impact wrench, so the right answer is a 3/8-inch bore, not a stronger braid on the same bore.

Braided Hose Standards and Test Methods

Standards are how you verify a braided hose claim without testing it yourself. Three things appear on a compliant hose, and each can be checked.

The manufacturing standard. Textile-reinforced thermoplastic air hose is commonly produced to ISO 5774; rubber air hose to ISO 2398; wire-braided hydraulic hose to a defined pressure-and-impulse standard family. The standard tells you which test regime the hose was designed against.

The pressure ratings. Working pressure and, on better-labeled products, burst pressure. Those two catch the majority of substitution problems, because both are expensive to fake and cheap to perform.

What to ask for in a quote

Two reports carry most of the risk out of a purchase, and both are cheap for a supplier to produce. Ask for the burst test on the finished assembly, not the bare hose, because the fitting is part of the pressure boundary. Ask for the adhesion test between tube, braid, and cover.

Then get four facts in writing:

The standard the hose is manufactured to, by number and year.

Working and burst pressure, printed rather than implied.

The reinforcement, as braid layer count and material.

The rated temperature range, with the tube compound named.

Confirm the minimum order quantity, lead time, and warranty length. The braid provides the pressure capability; the tube provides the chemical compatibility.

Is a braided hose stronger than a regular hose?

Yes, in pressure terms. The braid carries hoop stress that an unreinforced tube cannot, so a braided hose is rated far higher than tubing of the same bore. It also resists kinking and holds its length under pressure. The trade is stiffness, weight, and cost.

What is the difference between braided and spiral hose?

Braid interlaces reinforcement groups over and under each other; spiral winds them in the same direction in alternating layers. The geometry decides the performance: spiral carries more pressure and survives more impulse cycles, while braid bends tighter, weighs less in light duty, and costs less. Neither is an upgrade of the other — the pressure class and the bend radius allowed decide between them.

Are stainless steel braided hoses better than textile braided hoses?

Not universally. Steel overbraid is better where pressure, heat, or abrasion is severe. Textile braid is better where weight, flexibility, and cost matter and pressures stay moderate — which describes most workshop air hose use. The practical point is that a stainless steel braided hose is a specialist assembly for the top of the pressure and temperature range, not the general answer for a workshop air line.

Can braided hose be repaired?

Low-pressure hose with barbed or clamped ends can be repaired in the field, provided the replacement end is rated for the same pressure and the clamp suits that cover. Crimped high-pressure hose cannot: once the crimp is cut off, the assembly no longer holds its rating. Re-crimping is a factory operation, so the safe answer is a new factory-crimped assembly.

How do I choose the right bore size for a braided hose?

Size the bore for the air the tool consumes, not for the thread on the port. At a 100 PSI inlet a 1/4-inch bore passes about 40 SCFM, 3/8 inch about 80 SCFM, and 1/2 inch about 140 SCFM. Compare that with the tool’s rated consumption, then add margin for the run.

Can a braided hose carry water, steam, or fuel?

Yes, but the braid is not what decides it. The tube compound sets chemical compatibility, and the cover sets whether permeated vapor can escape. Wire braid with a heat-rated tube suits hot water and steam where the cover is perforated. Textile braid with an oil-rated tube suits fuel and oil. A PTFE tube under stainless overbraid suits aggressive chemical lines.

How long should a braided hose last?

There is no single number, because life is set by duty rather than by age. A textile-braided workshop air hose used indoors and kept off the floor commonly runs several years. The same hose dragged over concrete in sunlight can fail in months, as abrasion and UV reach the cover and then the braid. Store it coiled and out of sunlight.

Why does a braided hose fail right behind the fitting?

Because that is where the flexing concentrates. The crimp or ferrule locks the braid, so the hose cannot bend gradually along its length; every movement of the line is worked into the short section immediately behind the end. Run below the published minimum bend radius, that section fatigues and the braid strands break one by one.

Do braided hoses need special fittings or clamps?

They need ends that grip the braid, not just the tube. A barb and clamp that only compresses the cover holds a low-pressure line, but on a braided hose the pressure load runs through the reinforcement, and an end that ignores it will pull apart below the hose’s rating. Crimped ends compress the braid and are the standard above low pressure.

HENGHUAについて

HENGHUA manufactures braided air hoses and reinforced hose assemblies for workshops, distributors, and OEM brands worldwide.
