A coiled multilayer hose with a PVC-coated cover and stainless steel end fittings.

What Makes a Composite Hose Different

The difference is that nothing in a multilayer hose is monolithic. Each requirement is carried by a separate layer: the helix resists collapse and holds the bore open, the film stops the medium, the fabric carries the load, and the cover protects the rest. The layers are not bonded into one solid wall, so the finished article bends far more easily than a hard-walled rubber hose of the same bore.

Because a multilayer hose keeps its layers separate, it can be tailored: change the film and the same hose handles a different chemical family, and the helix and the fabric do not need to change.

A composite hose also resists flattening better than most alternatives: the spirals carry the crushing load and the bore springs back. That behaviour is difficult to reproduce in a bonded construction.

The Layer Stack, From Inside Out

Five layers sit in a fixed order, and the order is not arbitrary: the lining film sits inside the load-carrying fabric, and the cover sits outside it.

In Europe the finished article is normally specified to EN 13765, which covers thermoplastic multilayer, non-vulcanised hose for hydrocarbons, solvents and chemicals.

One boundary is worth fixing early: EN 12115, the standard for rubber and thermoplastic chemical hose, does not apply to a multilayer assembly like this one. See the EN 12115 explained guide for where that line falls.

Table 1 lists the five layers and what each one does.

Helix — holds the bore open, takes crushing loads, and codes as g or S on the datasheet.

Film — the only wetted layer, and the one that decides the chemical list.

Fabric — carries the hoop stress and never touches the product.

Sampul — a consumable that protects the fabric from abrasion and weather.

Outer helix — takes ground contact and sets the coil shape.

Table 1. The layer stack in order: helix, film, fabric, cover, outer helix.

What Does the Inner Wire Helix Do?

The inner wire helix is a continuous spiral of metal that sits just inside the lining film. It carries almost no hoop stress; its job is to stop the bore collapsing when the line is under vacuum or when something heavy rests on it.

Material selection for the helix is about corrosion rather than strength. Galvanised steel is the economical default, stainless steel suits wet or marine environments, and a polypropylene-coated steel helix is used where the wire could be exposed to a mildly aggressive medium. Note the coding convention: suppliers often mark it as `g` for galvanised and `S` for stainless.

Because the inner wire helix is a spiral and not a smooth tube, the bore is not perfectly round when the hose is bent. A slightly non-round bore is normal, and it is why flow calculations should use the published inside diameter rather than an estimated effective one.

Which Lining Film and Fabric Sit Inside?

The lining is a thin polypropylene film in the most common constructions, and that polypropylene film is what the medium actually touches. The material handles acids, alkalis and many aqueous chemicals well and is inexpensive, which is why it dominates general chemical transfer.

Where the medium would attack polypropylene, a ptfe lining takes over. That lining extends the chemical range to strong solvents and oxidising acids, and it also raises the temperature ceiling. Where a polypropylene film would be attacked within weeks, the fluoropolymer version simply continues. A ptfe lining costs more and is slightly stiffer, but it makes one construction suitable for a much wider product list.

Between the films sit the reinforcing fabrics. Polyester and polyamide fabrics carry the hoop stress and give the wall its tensile strength. They are never wetted in a correctly built hose, so their selection is about mechanical performance rather than chemistry.

What Does the Outer Cover Protect?

The cover protects everything underneath. A PVC-coated polyester fabric is the standard choice because it resists abrasion, weathering and light chemical splash. Polypropylene covers suit duties where the cover itself may see product.

Outside the cover sits a second helix. It shields the fabric from the ground and from contact with the structure, and it gives the coil its shape so the hose lies predictably when it is rolled. On a multilayer hose used on a dock or a tank farm, this outer spiral takes most of the daily abuse.

Why the Two Wire Helixes Matter

Two spirals instead of one bonded helix is what separates a multilayer hose from a rubber suction hose. An embedded helix can hold a bore open, but it is bonded into the wall, so the wall still carries the ground load. Here the outer spiral takes that load instead, so the wall stays light and the ground load never reaches the fabric.

The practical benefit of a composite hose shows up in three situations you can recognise on site. A line under vacuum would flatten an unreinforced wall, while this build holds its bore. A line run over by a vehicle springs back into shape. A line dragged across a kerb sacrifices the outer spiral instead of the fabric.

The spirals also explain the bend behaviour. The multilayer hose bends easily because the layers slide against each other, but it will kink if it is bent more tightly than its published figure. The helix cannot prevent that, because at some radius the inner spiral itself folds. Respect the minimum figure and the multilayer hose lasts; ignore it and the film creases and fails.

Lining Film Selection: PP, PTFE, ECTFE and UHMWPE

Four films cover most chemical transfer duties. Table 2 compares them on the points that decide a purchase.

Table 2. Lining films compared for chemical range and temperature ceiling

Film

Chemical Range

Temperature Ceiling

Notes

Polypropylene

Acids, alkalis, aqueous chemicals

Around +100 °C

Lowest cost, poor with aromatic solvents

PTFE

Broadest, including strong solvents

Up to about +150 °C in this build

Highest cost, widest product list

ECTFE

Strong acids and oxidisers

Around +150 °C

Good mechanical strength at temperature

UHMWPE

Acids, alkalis, abrasive slurries

Around +80 °C

Best abrasion resistance

Choose on the medium first and temperature second, exactly as you would for a rubber-lined chemical hose. Where two films both suit the product, the cheaper one wins unless the duty is abrasive or the temperature is high. Where the product list is long and changes often, a ptfe lining can replace several dedicated hoses, which is often cheaper overall than stocking a hose per chemical.

Cover Options and What They Protect Against

The cover is a consumable, and it is designed that way. Its job is to be damaged so that the film and fabric are not.

A PVC-coated polyester cover is the general-purpose choice. It resists sunlight, water, abrasion and the light splash that happens around a loading point. It should be inspected for cuts and for hardening, because a stiff cover cracks and then exposes the fabric.

A polypropylene cover suits duties where the outside may contact product, because the material is chemically broader than PVC. Nylon rope covers are used where extra abrasion resistance and grip matter more than chemical resistance, typically on dock and marine duty.

Whatever the cover, treat a cut through to the fabric as the end of the useful life of the assembly. The outer cover is the first layer to show wear, which makes it the layer an inspector reads first. The cover is the only thing standing between the load-carrying fabric and the environment, and a compromised cover turns a reliable hose into a slow-failure risk.

Working Pressure, Vacuum and Bend Radius

Three figures govern safe use, and they interact. Table 3 shows how the numbers are usually presented and what each one means in practice.

Table 3. Reading pressure, vacuum and bend figures for multilayer hose

Figure

What It Describes

How to Use It

Working pressure

Continuous pressure at a stated reference temperature

Compare with the highest sustained pressure in the transfer

Burst pressure

Failure point in a destructive test

Defines the safety factor only

Vacuum rating

Negative pressure resisted without collapse

Required for suction duty and for draining the line

Bend radius

Tightest bend that does not crease the film

Lay the route so the hose never goes tighter, even under pull

Working pressure on a multilayer hose is normally quoted with a safety factor of four to one, so a hose that bursts at four times a figure carries that figure in service. The safety factor absorbs surge, age and damage; it is not a service allowance.

Temperature changes the picture. The films and fabrics lose strength as they heat, so the working pressure at the top of the temperature range is lower than the ambient figure. Ask for the derated value rather than assuming the printed number applies everywhere.

Typical published figures for the EN 13765 family run from DN 25 to DN 300, 4 bar to 14 bar, and −30 °C to +150 °C, all subject to the model datasheet.

Figure 3. Working pressure, vacuum and minimum bend radius all change with bore size.

End Fittings, Earthing and Assembly

End fittings for a multilayer hose are usually bolted or clamped rather than crimped, because the layers have to be captured without cutting them; the guide to hose couplings compares the end connection families. A typical termination traps the film and fabric between a tailpiece and an outer sleeve, so the load transfers from the fabric into the metal.

A non-bonded construction means static charge has nowhere natural to go. Flammable-service hose is normally built with a conductive path from the fittings through the wall, and the assembly is designed so that both end fittings are electrically connected. Confirm the electrical grade when you order rather than assuming it.

Earthing continues on site. A hose used for a flammable product needs a bonding connection that ties both ends to a common ground, and the connection must be made before transfer starts and broken after it ends. Earthing completes the path that the conductive grade starts.

Safe Transfer Practice on Site

Static control starts with flow. Charge generation rises with velocity, so keeping the flowrate inside the figure the product and hose grade allow is the first control. Most guidance treats a low initial velocity for the first part of a fill as good practice, particularly where the receiving vessel may contain vapour.

Confirm the earth — bonding connection made to bare metal at both ends before the valve opens.

Check the flowrate — stay inside the velocity the product and the hose grade allow.

Walk the route — no point tighter than the minimum bend, and no contact with hot surfaces.

Watch the cover — sweating, bubbling or a smell of product means stop and investigate.

Drain and cap — empty the line and cap the ends before the hose is stored or moved.

Then check the earth before you open a valve. A bonding strap that has been left off, or a clamp that has been placed on paint rather than bare metal, defeats the whole protection scheme. Treat the earth connection as a step in the procedure with a confirmation, not as something an operator remembers.

Route the hose so it never sits tighter than the figure on the label and never rests on a hot surface. During transfer, watch for the cover sweating, which indicates permeation or a weep, and stop the transfer if the product appears on the outside of the hose. The hose gives plenty of warning before it fails, and the warning is only useful if someone is watching.

Inspection, Testing and Retirement

Inspect before every transfer and record the result. Look for cuts to the cover, exposed fabric, kinks that have left a permanent set, corroded or broken helix wire, and fittings that have moved on the tail. Each of these is a stop-use condition, not a maintenance note.

Pressure test on the interval your procedure sets, and hydrostatically rather than pneumatically, because a stored-energy test on a failed multilayer hose is far more dangerous than a water test. Where the duty falls under EN 13765, keep that record with the assembly so the compliance trail survives a change of crew or a shift in supplier.

Retire rather than repair. A hose with a cover damaged down to the fabric, a creased film, a fitting that has slipped on its tail, or a broken helix wire is finished. None of those conditions can be corrected in the field.

Composite Hose FAQs

What is the difference between composite hose and rubber hose?

A rubber hose has a bonded wall in which the tube, reinforcement and cover are cured together. A composite hose leaves its layers unbonded, so it bends more freely and resists crushing far better. The composite hose is usually lighter for the same bore, and its lining can be changed without redesigning the load-carrying structure.

Can I use a multilayer hose for full vacuum?

Yes, if the assembly is rated for it and the inner helix is intact. The spiral is what prevents collapse, and the vacuum figure published by the manufacturer assumes the hose is straight and supported normally. Bending the hose under vacuum reduces its resistance, so keep the line as straight as the layout allows when you pull a vacuum.

Why does the manufacturer want to know the exact medium?

Because the lining film is the only part that decides chemical compatibility, and the film choice drives most of the cost. Two duties that look similar on a process sheet can need different films, and a wrong film fails by swelling or by permeating rather than by bursting. Give the supplier the full composition, including minor components.

How much does the hose cost?

Price depends mainly on bore, length, lining film and end fittings, with PTFE films and stainless helixes at the upper end. A larger bore raises the figure sharply because both material and weight rise with diameter. Compare quotations only with the bore, film, helix material, length and fittings all matching, because a price that omits one of those fields is not a lower offer. Ask for a bulk order figure at the same time so the repeat cost is visible.

Do I need a conductive grade?

For any flammable or combustible product, yes, and the requirement usually follows from the area classification rather than from preference. A conductive or antistatic grade provides a path for static charge from the wetted surface to the fittings. The hose alone is not enough: it must also be bonded and earthed during transfer. Confirm the grade when you order.

What bend radius should I plan for?

Use the published minimum and then add margin, because the hose will be pulled and pushed in service. Lay the route so the natural resting position is well inside the limit, and avoid pulling the hose around a corner tighter than that figure to make a connection reach. A creased film does not recover, and a crease is where a multilayer hose eventually fails.

How long should the assembly last?

Service life depends far more on handling than on age. A hose that is coiled to a generous diameter, stored out of sunlight and never dragged over edges lasts many times longer than one treated as a rope. Set an interval in your procedure, inspect against it, and retire earlier if the cover or the film shows any damage. Handling changes the price of ownership far more than the purchase price does, because a hose treated well outlasts three treated badly.

Source Composite Hose Built to Your Specification

A composite hose is assembled from choices, so it can only be as good as the specification behind it. Where a plant standardises on one construction, a bulk order across several bores is usually cheaper per metre than buying sizes one at a time. Name the medium, the temperature, the bore, the film and the fittings, and the multilayer hose follows.

HENGHUA manufactures chemical transfer hoses and complete hose assemblies for chemical plants, tank farms, distributors, and OEM brands. Every hose we build is specified by its lining, its reinforcement, and its cover, and the assembly leaves the factory with bolted or crimped stainless steel fittings, a hydrostatic proof test, and a documented pressure rating. Our chemical hose range covers PTFE, FEP, polypropylene, UHMWPE, and EPDM linings from 1/2 inch to 8 inch bore, rated to 16 bar, in both bonded and multilayer construction.

A distributor planning a first range can also start from SKU rationalisation for distributors and keep the number of films and fittings small.

Because we control film extrusion, lining, winding, and fitting assembly in one plant, a bulk order moves quickly and the specification on the label is the specification you get. Every bulk order ships with a proof test record for each assembly. A clear specification also makes the price comparable between suppliers. If you are sourcing chemical hoses for a project, a distribution line, or OEM supply, send us your specification and we will quote against it. Get a quote and free samples

Working to the multilayer hose standard is the usual route where the duty sits under European rules, and the guide to the EN 13765 standard explains what that covers.
