It carries acids, alkalis, and oxidizing media at a quoted working pressure of 17 bar inside its stated temperature band, and it holds its bore under vacuum because a steel helix runs through the wall. If you are reading this specification sheet, this page explains what each line means, which limit binds first, and which duty cycle justifies the build.

The layer stack is read from the liner outward. The 17 bar class is read against the 10 bar envelope of EN 12115:2021. The steel helix is what allows the line to run on the suction side. The duty cycles below set out where that combination earns its cost.

About a 15-minute read at 250 words per minute; the page covers construction, the 17 bar class, the steel helix, liner limits, duty cycles, and sizing.

What Does Each Line of an XLPE Chemical Hose Specification Mean?

A cross-linked polyethylene hose specification sheet is a stack of claims, and each claim should point to a physical layer. Read the sheet from the liner outward, because the liner meets the chemical first. Then read the pressure class, the temperature window, and the electrical grade against the standard that governs them.

For a chemical suction hose, one claim decides more than the rest. The steel helix is what lets the line be pumped on the inlet side without collapsing. The cover, the textile plies, and the copper wires support that job, but they do not do it alone.

A chemical discharge hose and a suction line share the same wall until the helix is added. On the 17 bar chemical hose class, the higher rating sits on top of the same layer logic. The reading order does not change, and neither does the way you verify each claim.

Working pressure and temperature rarely move together on a chemical hose specification sheet. A rating quoted for one temperature band applies inside that band alone. The electrical path forms a second pair with the medium, because a liner that resists a chemical may still build static as the product moves.

Inside an XLPE Chemical Hose: Layer by Layer

This build is a tube within a tube. The inner tube, or liner, is cross-linked polyethylene. It is the only layer that touches the product, so it carries the chemical resistance claim. Everything outside the liner exists to protect it or to carry a mechanical load.

The construction follows a fixed sequence:

A cross-linked polyethylene liner forms the chemical contact surface.

Plies of synthetic textile cord wrap the liner and take the pressure load.

A steel helix runs through the wall to resist collapse under vacuum.

Two crossed anti-static copper wires give static charge a continuous path.

A white synthetic rubber cover shields the reinforcement from the outside.

Each of the five layers answers one question. The liner answers what the hose may carry. The textile plies answer how much pressure the wall can take. A pressure rating belongs to this exact stack, and every layer supports it.

The helix answers whether the line survives vacuum. The copper wires answer where static charge goes. Once a cover is cut through, moisture and product can reach the textile plies and shorten the life of the whole wall.

Each layer also has one defined role on the specification sheet:

Table 1. Five elements make the wall of a cross-linked polyethylene hose: the XLPE liner, plies of synthetic textile cord, a steel helix, two crossed copper wires, and a white synthetic rubber cover.

Why the Steel Helix Matters in an XLPE Chemical Hose

Pressure and vacuum load the wall in opposite directions. Internal pressure pushes the wall outward, and the textile plies resist that push well. Vacuum pulls the wall inward, and textile plies offer little resistance to that pull. A wall built only for pressure folds inward on a suction line.

That is why an XLPE chemical hose on the inlet side carries a helix inside the wall. The coil of steel wire holds the bore open while the pump pulls. Without it, the liner collapses, the flow stops, and product is trapped in a flattened tube.

The same structural difference decides the hose type. The distinction is the one covered in suction hose vs delivery hose, and a chemical suction hose simply adds the XLPE liner and the antistatic path to that same geometry.

A helix in a suction wall also shapes how the hose handles. A coiled wall resists the tight bend radius that a bare textile wall would allow, so the routing plan should sit inside the maker’s stated limit. Bending a suction hose tighter than intended can kink the wall and pinch the bore.

Duty decides whether the helix is essential:

Table 2. How the line position loads the hose wall, and whether a steel helix is needed to keep the bore open.

Line position

Load on the wall

Helix

Result

Discharge side

Internal pressure pushes outward

A delivery build is specified

Textile plies carry the pressure load

Suction side

External pressure pushes inward

Required

The helix keeps the bore open

Gravity drain

Low pressure in either direction

Chosen only for crush protection

Light duty with low wall stress

Mixed suction and discharge

Direction reverses each cycle

Required

Only a suction and discharge build suits it

Figure 2. On the suction side the steel helix carries the inward load from the pump, so the liner stays round and the bore stays open.

A helix also resists crushing when the hose is walked on, driven over, or pulled across rough ground. That extra stiffness costs a little flexibility, and it is the trade to weigh: accept it where the line sees vacuum, and specify a plain delivery build where it never does.

How the 17 bar Class Sits Against EN 12115:2021

EN 12115:2021 sets a service envelope of −20 °C to +65 °C at a working pressure of 10 bar for rubber and thermoplastic chemical hoses. A 17 bar chemical hose sits above that base envelope. The higher figure therefore rests on the maker’s own test data rather than on the standard envelope alone, so treat it as a quoted class with a stated temperature band.

The standard also splits hoses into two types. Type D is a delivery hose built for pressure duty, and Type SD is a suction and delivery hose built for lines that see vacuum. A chemical discharge hose used only under pressure can be Type D, but any line that also draws vacuum needs Type SD.

Working pressure and temperature travel together. A hose qualified at a rating inside one temperature band is qualified only inside that band. Above or below that band, the usable pressure falls. Compare the rating at the real wall temperature, not at room temperature.

The standard also grades the electrical path. EN 12115:2021 divides hoses into four grades and verifies them with the EN ISO 8031 method. A conductive grade is measured at or below 10⁶ Ω, and an antistatic grade at or below 10⁹ Ω. The two crossed copper wires in this build give the hose a defined path to a safe point.

Table 3. The 17 bar class compared with the base EN 12115:2021 envelope (planning values; confirm against the current standard text).

Parameter

EN 12115:2021 envelope

This 17 bar build

What it means for the buyer

Hose type

Type D delivery and Type SD suction and delivery

Suction and discharge (Type SD duty)

Resists vacuum as well as pressure

Working pressure

10 bar

17 bar quoted class

A higher class than the base envelope

Temperature

−20 °C to +65 °C (hose envelope)

XLPE liner −40 °C to +100 °C (material window)

Two different scopes: confirm both

Electrical path

Four grades, tested to EN ISO 8031

Two crossed copper wires

Ask for the grade that was tested

Temperature and Chemical Limits of an XLPE Chemical Hose

Cross-linked polyethylene has a continuous service window of −40 °C to +100 °C, and the figure belongs to the liner rather than to the finished assembly. At the cold end that window reaches below the base EN 12115:2021 envelope; at the hot end it stops below the ceiling of EPDM and FKM. Both ends matter, because a process that runs near the top of the band leaves little room for a hot day or a blocked line.

The liner is specified for acids, alkalis, and oxidizing media such as hypochlorite. Aromatic solvents attack the polymer even when a general chart looks reassuring, so they fall outside the range of an XLPE chemical hose. For aromatic solvent duty, specify a PTFE liner instead.

Cost is the other side of the liner choice, and it is read at the same bore and pressure class. A fluoropolymer liner buys the widest chemical range at the highest material cost; XLPE covers acids, alkalis, and oxidizing media at a lower one. Treat that ranking as relative and confirm it against the current quote for the size you need.

Treat the cleaning agent as a chemical duty on the same wall. A liner that carries oxidizing media well may still need a flush between products, so note the cleaning agent, its concentration, and its temperature alongside the process fluid.

Table 4. Road tanker unloading, plant pump suction, and tank farm drainage all draw product on one side and push it on the other. A chemical suction hose rated for that duty keeps its bore, and a chemical discharge hose on the same run carries the pressure side without extra parts.

A 17 bar chemical hose also appears in smaller duties. Chemical dosing, drum transfer, and IBC transfer use a narrow bore that must survive tight routing without kinking.

The common thread across those duty cycles is reversal. Anywhere the same line is asked to pull and to push, the helix and the higher class earn their cost. Where the line only ever pushes, a plain delivery build does the same work with fewer parts.

A second group of duties on this XLPE line uses the hose for reach rather than for pressure. Where a fixed pipe cannot follow the load, a flexible suction and discharge line bridges the gap and still takes a vacuum at the start of the transfer. That is the case for tanker unloading and for temporary plant tie-ins.

Table 5. Choose the bore from the pump curve and the flow you need, then check it against the hose it replaces. A bore larger than the pump can fill adds weight and leaves product stranded in the line at every shutdown.

End fittings on the same hose carry the same chemical at the same pressure, so they deserve the same scrutiny as the tube. Match the fitting alloy to the medium, then decide between a factory crimp and a field clamp before you order. A crimp is permanent and repeatable, while a clamp can be changed but only at the correct torque.

Route an XLPE chemical hose along a gentle path. Support it so that its own weight does not hang on the fittings, and keep the lowest point drained where the product can settle. A line that traps chemical between runs adds a cleaning step and a corrosion risk.

The selection pages below cover each of those decisions in detail:

Bore and flow connect through the hose size selection guide.

Fitting families are set out in the hose couplings guide.

Clamp materials and torque sit in the hose clamp selection guide.

A comparable rubber build is shown on the rubber suction hose product page.

A short checklist keeps the order of decisions straight:

Table 6. The liner carries the chemical, plies of synthetic textile cord take the pressure load, a steel helix keeps the bore open under vacuum, and two crossed copper wires drain static charge. The same build is also sold as a Type SD chemical hose, so match the construction and the pressure class on the quote.

What does the 17 bar rating mean?

The 17 bar figure is the working pressure the maker quotes for continuous service inside a stated temperature band. EN 12115:2021 sets a base envelope of 10 bar, so anything quoted above it stands on the maker’s own test data rather than on the standard alone. Ask which temperature band the figure was tested in, and ask for the test report that carries it, because the same hose is quoted lower once the wall runs hotter.

Why does a suction hose need a steel helix?

A suction and discharge line sees a partial vacuum on the inlet side and pressure on the outlet side. The wall must therefore resist an inward load as well as an outward one. A steel helix inside the wall carries the inward load and holds the bore open, and the same helix resists crushing from footsteps and vehicle wheels. On the specification sheet, confirm the hose type and the helix before you order.

Is XLPE the same as UHMWPE?

No. Both liners belong to the polyethylene family, but they are produced by different processes: cross-linked polyethylene links its polymer chains, while ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene uses very long ones. That changes the duty each one suits. Public datasheets also use the names loosely, so the liner named on the sheet is what a compatibility check has to use, not the family name. Confirm the exact liner marked on the assembly before you order.

Which chemicals should not contact an XLPE liner?

Aromatic solvents are the main group to avoid: they attack cross-linked polyethylene even when a general resistance chart looks reassuring. Concentration and temperature change that picture inside a group as well, so a dilute acid that is safe at ambient can move outside the liner window once the wall runs hot. Confirm the specific medium, its concentration, and the wall temperature together, and specify a PTFE liner where the aromatic solvents stay in the duty.

What temperature range does the XLPE liner cover?

Cross-linked polyethylene covers a planning range of −40 °C to +100 °C in continuous service, and the figure belongs to the liner rather than to the assembly. Both ends deserve attention: a process that runs near the top of the band leaves little margin for a hot day, a blocked line, or a slow shutdown. Confirm the real wall temperature against the maker’s data.

How do the anti-static copper wires work?

Two crossed copper wires give static charge a continuous path from the liner toward the end fittings. As product moves and rubs the liner, charge builds up, and an unguided charge can discharge as a spark. The wires drain that charge to a grounded point. The wire path is most exposed at the crimp, so inspect both ends for a broken or corroded wire when the hose returns to service. The wires support correct bonding and grounding practice, which remains a separate site responsibility.

What bore sizes does this hose come in?

Common bores for this class run from 3/4 in to 4 in as a planning range. The smaller end suits dosing and drum transfer, while the larger end suits tanker unloading and plant suction lines. Choose the bore from the flow the pump can actually deliver, then compare it with the hose it replaces. A duty outside that band needs a different build, so confirm it with the maker before you order.

How should the hose be installed?

Route the hose along a gentle path and support it so the end fittings carry no hanging load. Keep the bend radius inside the maker’s stated limit, because a helix wall resists a tight bend. Confirm the fitting material against the chemical before assembly, and follow the correct torque or crimp method. A line driven over or dragged across rough ground deserves a helix check: look for a flattened section.

What should I check before each use?

Inspect the cover for cuts, blisters, and soft spots, and feel the wall for any sign that the reinforcement has broken. Check both end fittings for movement, corrosion, and a sound seal. Confirm that the cover marking still matches the specification for pressure, type, and grade. On a suction line, watch for any flattening that suggests a weakened helix, and remove the hose from service if the bore no longer springs back.

About HENGHUA

HENGHUA manufactures chemical hoses and hose assemblies for distributors, retailers, and OEM brands worldwide.
