1. What a 2B9 Adapter Does
A 2B9 adapter is a 90° elbow hydraulic adapter with a BSP male 60° cone seat stud end at port E and a BSP female 60° cone end at port F. It turns the connection through a right angle and changes the port gender in one part.
Both ends must match their mating parts exactly, in thread form, seat angle and hex clearance, because a correct match at both ends is the precondition for eliminating leakage at the conversion point.

2.1 Connection 1 – BSP male, 60° cone seat (port E)
Port E is a BSPP male stud end with a 60° cone seat, offered from G1/8″x28 to G2″x11. It screws into a BSPP port machined to ISO 1179, or into a flat-face port with a bonded seal washer.
The 60° cone joint is metal to metal at the cone, so it holds without a separate sealing element and releases cleanly for service.
2.2 Connection 2 – BSP female, 60° cone (port F)
Port F is a BSPP female end with an internal 60° cone seat, from G1/8″x28 to G2″x11. It accepts a male stud end that carries the matching 60° cone, so it makes a female-to-male adaptation rather than a female-to-female joint.
Because port F is a cone joint as well, the same rule applies at both ends: the cone carries the seal, the thread only provides the clamping force. On a 2B9 adapter, the two ends normally carry the same nominal size, and reduced part numbers such as 2B9-10-08 combine a 5/8 inch male end with a 1/2 inch female end.

3. How to Read a 2B9 Part Number
A 2B9 part number has three parts: the series prefix, the size code, and an optional second size code.
- 2 – the BSP male to BSP female family in the British Adapters range, with the 60° cone seat at the male end and the 60° cone at the female end.
- B – BSP thread, here BSPP to ISO 228-1.
- 9 – the 90° elbow version. The number 4 marks the 45° version in the same range.
- Size code – two digits giving the nominal thread size in sixteenths of an inch: 02 is 1/8, 04 is 1/4, 06 is 3/8, 08 is 1/2, 10 is 5/8, 12 is 3/4, 16 is 1, 20 is 1.1/4, 24 is 1.1/2, 32 is 2.
- Second size code – when two codes are joined by a hyphen, the first code is port E, the male end, and the second is port F, the female end.
Worked example: 2B9-10-08. Port E is a G5/8″x14 male 60° seat end (code 10) and port F is a G1/2″x14 female 60° cone end (code 08). From the chart, A is 35 mm, B is 7.5 mm, S1 is 22 mm and S2 is 27 mm. This is the part to choose when a 5/8 inch port has to feed a 1/2 inch female connection around a corner.
4. Installation and Fitment
Port E is a cone seat joint and port F receives a cone seat stud end. In both cases the thread does not carry the seal, so bring each joint together by hand first, confirm that it turns smoothly, then tighten with a wrench until the cone seats.
- Do not use thread sealant or tape on either end, because both joints seal on a cone and not on the thread flanks.
- Where a flat-face port is used at the male end, fit a new bonded seal washer and tighten until the washer is compressed and the metal faces meet.
- Tighten the male end first, set the elbow direction, then make up the female end.
- Keep the internal cone of port F clean and free of swarf, paint or old sealant before the mating stud end is inserted.

A 2B9 adapter can be reused if the male cone, the internal cone, the threads and the hexes are undamaged. Replace bonded seals and O-rings at every reassembly.

5.1 Why an elbow instead of a straight adapter
A 90° elbow changes the direction of the connection at the port. It also allows the gender change to be made in the same part, which is why an elbow with one male and one female end is chosen in four recurring situations.
Routing in a tight envelope: the space in front of a manifold, pump or valve port is often occupied. The elbow turns the line away immediately, and because port F is female, the mating stud end is bolted in from the side, where there is room for the wrench.
Protecting the hose bend: a hose that leaves a port on the port axis and then has to bend behind the machine can be forced below its design radius. The elbow takes the direction change into the steel body and lets the hose leave in the direction it naturally runs.
Respecting the minimum bend radius: every hose has a minimum bend radius below which the reinforcement is stressed and service life falls. An elbow at the port removes the sharp bend, so the hose works at a radius it was designed for.
Access and service: a female end on the elbow leg gives a flat, open hex that a wrench can reach, which helps on ports buried behind other components. On this elbow this also lets a male hose end be removed without disturbing the adapter.
Fluid-dynamic trade-off: a 90° elbow adds a local pressure loss that a straight adapter does not have, because the flow must turn and the turn creates turbulence. Keep the bore matched to the hose and tube bore, avoid stacking several elbows in a short run, and favour a swept body where the circuit is sensitive to pressure loss. BSPT is the taper thread defined by ISO 7-1, where the joint seals on the thread flanks and needs a sealant. They are not interchangeable: a tapered male end damages a parallel female port, and a parallel male end will not seal in a tapered port.
