Why a One-Piece 90 Degree Elbow

A 90 degree outlet is the most common port direction in hydraulic systems. Pumps, valve manifolds and cylinder heads all route hoses at right angles. This 90 degree ORFS female O-ring seal fitting replaces a straight fitting plus a separate 90 degree adapter, removing two potential leak points and extra length.

The elbow body is formed in one piece by hot forging or cold heading, then machined to tolerance. There is no welded seam at the bend. Our impulse testing found that a one-piece elbow survives pressure cycling significantly longer than a welded two-piece elbow of the same size. The compact 90 degree geometry also keeps the hose close to the machine frame, which reduces cover wear and protects the hose from snagging.

How the ORFS Flat Seat Works

The ORFS female fitting carries a flat face seat inside the threaded end. The O-ring itself lives in a groove at the tip of the mating ORFS male connector (our 14211 series). When the UNF female thread is tightened onto the male end, the male O-ring tip presses against this flat seat and the O-ring is compressed. The O-ring, not metal, carries the seal.

This is why ORFS is called the face seal system: the seal happens on the flat face, perpendicular to the thread axis, rather than on a cone. The design tolerates surface scratches and minor nicks on the seat, withstands high impulse pressure without loosening, and can be repeatedly assembled and disassembled with a simple O-ring replacement.

90 Degree vs 45 Degree vs Straight – Which One Do You Need

Use a straight fitting when the hose leaves the port in line with the port axis. Use a 90 degree elbow when the hose must turn immediately, such as at a pump port or valve manifold edge. Guide de montage : quatre étapes pour un montage sûr du tuyau

Follow this process for every crimped assembly. It applies to every 90 degree ORFS female O-ring seal fitting size from dash -04 to -24. Skipping one step is the most common cause of early fitting failure.

After crimping, measure the crimp O.D. with a digital caliper and compare it with the tolerance on the crimp data sheet. Record the value on your quality log. Then align the nut and tighten it to the torque value on the data sheet.

  • Never seal the ORFS flat seat with tape. The O-ring on the mating male end carries the seal. Thread sealant tape or paste on the seat destroys the seal.
  • Keep the flat seat clean and undamaged. A burr or deep scratch on the seat can cut the O-ring during assembly. Protect the seat during handling and storage.
  • Do not confuse ORFS with JIC. ORFS seals on a flat face with an O-ring; JIC seals with a 37 degree flare cone. The threads may be similar, but the sealing geometry is completely different.
  • Align the nut before final tightening. Rotate the 90 degree outlet to its final direction, then tighten. Do not use the hose to twist the nut into position after tightening.
  • Never reuse a crimped fitting. Once crimped, the ferrule zone is work-hardened. A re-crimp cannot restore the original grip.
