1. What a 5T9-SP Adapter Does

The 5T9-SP adapter is a 90° elbow hydraulic adapter with a BSPT male taper thread on one end and a BSPT female taper thread on the other. 3. How to Read a 5T9-SP Part Number

The code has three parts: the series identifier, the size code and the suffix. The series identifier is 5T9, and the SP suffix marks the taper thread (ISO 7-1) version of the series rather than the parallel thread version.

  • 5T – adapter family that takes a male taper end and a female taper end.
  • 9 – 90° elbow configuration.
  • SP – BSPT variant of the series, with R and Rc taper threads.

Two digit size codes use the standard British pipe sizes: 02 = 1/8″, 04 = 1/4″, 06 = 3/8″, 08 = 1/2″, 12 = 3/4″, 16 = 1″, 20 = 1-1/4″, 24 = 1-1/2″, 32 = 2″. In this series each part number carries one size code, because the male and female ends are matched in size along the table.

4. Installation and Fitment

  • Inspect both taper threads, the external thread on end E and the internal thread on end F, together with the mating port and the mating stud end. Burrs, swarf or a previously stretched thread will not seal.
  • Clean the threads and apply thread sealant or PTFE tape to the male thread. Keep the sealant or tape off the first thread crest so that nothing enters the fluid path. On end F the sealant goes on the male thread of the part being fitted into the adapter.
  • Plan the final orientation of the female end before final tightening. Screw end E into the port by hand until it seats, then tighten with a spanner on the hex until the female leg points where the hose has to go. If the elbow passes the required angle, back it out and restart with fresh sealant or tape instead of tightening further.
  • Tighten to snug plus the small additional movement needed to reach the angle. Stop when resistance rises sharply: a taper thread expands the port as it enters, and over-tightening can split the port boss.
  • Support the port body while tightening, especially on aluminium or thin-wall manifolds, so that the reaction torque is not carried by the boss alone.
  • Taper threaded joints are not designed for repeated assembly. Each reassembly distorts the thread slightly and requires fresh sealant. Replace the elbow if either thread shows flattening or if a thread gauge shows the taper has been drawn out.
  • Common fitment errors and symptoms: cross-threading on the first turn; too little sealant, which shows as a slow weep at the thread; over-tightening, which shows as a cracked port or a distorted female end; and fitting a parallel BSPP stud end into the Rc female thread, which will not seal because the forms differ.

BSPT is a taper thread to ISO 7-1, where the pressure-tight joint is made on the thread flanks with a sealant. They are not interchangeable: a taper male thread does not seal in a parallel port, and forcing one in damages the port.

Q2. What is the difference between a 60° cone seat and a bonded seal, and which should I choose? Both belong to the BSPP family and neither applies to this taper threaded series. A 60° cone seat seals by metal-to-metal contact between the cone of the stud end and the cone of the port, so it needs no separate part.
