A blue IBC transfer hose with an unmarked cover, coupled to the bottom outlet of a 1,000 L intermediate bulk container.

What an IBC Transfer Hose Has to Solve in Small-Container Transfer

A drum or an IBC is moved by forklift and emptied where it stands. There is no loading rack, no boom and usually no second operator. The hose is short, handled at chest height, disconnected by hand, and then put down with product still inside it.

That combination makes an IBC transfer hose a different product from a bulk transfer hose. It must be light enough to route by hand, chemically correct for the medium, and electrically safe when the container cannot be bonded through a steel chassis.

The duties a small-container hose has to satisfy are:

Chemical resistance. The tube must resist the specific medium at the real concentration and temperature, checked against the manufacturer’s chemical resistance chart.

Static control. Moving liquid generates charge, so conductive or antistatic construction is used where the medium requires it.

Flexibility and length. A short run from outlet to pump inlet that bends without kinking.

Pressure and vacuum capability. Delivery duty and suction duty are separate duties, and an IBC discharge line often sees low pressure but a harder vacuum.

Cleanability. Residual product stays in the bore after decanting, so the line is drained or flushed at every changeover.

A rigid pipe cannot follow a drum that gets repositioned, and it cannot absorb the small misalignment between a pump cart and an IBC pallet. That is the practical reason small-container transfer stays flexible.

Container Geometry: 200 L Drums, 1,000 L IBCs and Their Outlets

The container decides everything downstream. A standard 200 L drum is a closed-head steel or plastic cylinder with small threaded bungs in the top. An IBC is a 1,000 L intermediate bulk container, normally a cube in a steel cage on a pallet, with a bottom outlet and a top fill port.

A drum has no bottom outlet at all. Product leaves through a pump tube lowered into the drum, and a tube of about 1 m reaches the floor of a standard 200 L drum. An IBC drains from a bottom valve that typically takes a cam and groove or threaded connection.

Table 1 sets out the geometry that drives both pump and hose choice.

Table 1. An IBC tote pump is usually the same pumping element mounted on a cart, because the operator rolls it from pallet to pallet instead of lifting it into a bung.

The main families and where each one fits are:

Rotary positive-displacement. Steady, low-pulsation flow for thin to medium-viscosity liquids, and the classic drum transfer pump layout.

Air-operated double-diaphragm. Tolerant of solids and of running dry, and simple to use in a flammable area when it is air-driven.

Centrifugal. High flow for thin liquids, but it needs flooded suction and dislikes entrained air.

Peristaltic and progressive cavity. For shear-sensitive product or metered dosing, where the tube or stator is the consumable part.

Manual drum pump. A hand crank or lever unit for small volumes where no power is available.

Wetted materials set the chemical limit, not the pump type. Polypropylene, PVDF, PTFE and 316 stainless steel cover most small-container work, and the same medium can force a different material in the pump than in the line. A chemical drum pump ordered for a solvent may arrive with a body the solvent attacks, so the wetted-parts list is checked line by line.

Table 2 compares the families on the criteria that decide most small-container jobs.

Table 2. A pump tube of about 1 m lowered through the 2 in bung of a closed-head 200 L drum.

The drum pump hose then has to survive the discharge behavior of the family chosen. A positive-displacement pump pushes a nearly steady stream, while a double-diaphragm pump delivers pulses that work the coupling and the clamp. On the pump discharge side, sizing follows the same rules used for pump discharge hose arrangements in other transfer duties.

IBC Transfer Hose Bore and Connection Sizing

Bore is chosen from flow and allowable velocity, not from the outlet thread. A bore that is too small raises velocity, which raises pressure loss and static generation. A bore that is too large leaves a heavier, stiffer line and more residual product to drain.

For small-container work the useful range is narrow, and the outlet usually caps the bore anyway. An IBC outlet of 2 in normally sets the line size. A 3 in line is for a viscous medium or a long run. The general method is set out in the hose size selection guide.

Connection sizing follows from the container and from the receiving equipment:

Cam and groove couplings. Covered by A-A-59326, which supersedes MIL-C-27487, in commercial sizes from about 1/2 in to 6 in.

The four common camlock sizes. 1 in, 1.5 in, 2 in and 3 in cover nearly all drum and IBC connections.

Threaded ends. Pipe threads to ASME B1.20.1 NPT are the usual drum bung connection.

Flanged ends. Used when the IBC line terminates at fixed plant pipework on a PN or Class pattern.

Table 3 shows which hose end matches each common container outlet.

Table 3. Each extra adapter adds a joint, a thread seal and a potential leak path, and each one moves the hose further from the valve. Where possible the line is ordered with the correct end already fitted. The taxonomy of ends is covered in the hose couplings and selection criteria guide, and the material choice belongs to the fitting selection question.

Hose Construction Choices for an IBC Transfer Hose

Two standards frame construction for this duty. EN 12115:2021 covers rubber and thermoplastics hoses and hose assemblies for liquid or gaseous chemicals. It defines two assembly types, Type D and Type SD, and four grades based on electrical properties, with metal fittings. The rated envelope is −20 °C to +65 °C and working pressure up to 10 bar, and electrical resistance is measured by EN ISO 8031.

EN 13765 covers thermoplastic multi-layer composite hose and hose assemblies for hydrocarbons, solvents and chemicals. It names five types, bores from 25 mm to 250 mm, working pressures from 4 bar to 14 bar and working temperatures from −30 °C to +160 °C. Annex A deals with selecting the inner wall against the medium.

Rubber, UHMWPE, PTFE-lined and thermoplastic composite builds all appear in small-container service, and the choice follows the medium and the mechanical duty rather than the price. A single line may need suction capability at one end of the job and nothing more than delivery capability at the other, which is why the difference between suction and delivery hose is settled before ordering.

Table 4 relates the main constructions to small-container duties.

Table 4. The operator stands within arm’s reach of the outlet, the container is often on a plastic pallet, and the connection is broken by hand at the end of the transfer.

A steel drum resting on a steel pallet may still be insulated by the pallet or by a coated floor. An IBC in a cage sits on a pallet as well, so neither container is automatically earthed.

The bonding sequence we recommend for a drum or an IBC line is:

Identify the earth point. Use a verified building earth or a proven grounded conductor, not a painted handrail.

Bond the container to the receiver. Connect the drum or IBC directly to the vessel or pump frame that receives the product.

Earth the receiving equipment. Both ends of the transfer path should sit at the same potential before flow starts.

Clamp to bare metal. Remove paint, rust and product film at the contact point so the clamp bites clean metal.

Use an appropriate build. Where static risk is present, select conductive or antistatic construction for the IBC hose and the pump tube.

Verify and maintain. Check the path with a continuity meter, and inspect the clamp and cable at every changeover.

Figure 3. A bonding clamp biting bare metal on a 200 L drum before transfer begins.

Electrical grading of the hose itself belongs with the hose standard, not with the container procedure. The practical point is that bonding and earthing are completed before pumping starts and are left in place until the line is drained and disconnected.

Decanting Practice, Drip Control and Spill Response

The receiving vessel is positioned first, the secondary containment is placed under the connection point, and the route of the line is checked for kinks and low points before the valve is opened.

Free-falling discharge is avoided on chemical duty. Running the outlet into the body of the receiving liquid reduces splash, mist and static generation at the same time. Once the transfer is finished, the IBC hose is drained before disconnection, and any residual film stays inside the line behind a dry-break coupling or a cap.

The drum pump hose on a drum job is drained before disconnection too. Most IBC installations drain through the bottom outlet valve, so the run is short and works at low pressure. Such a line often fills an IBC from a drum or a small mixing tank. In each case the assembly is chosen for the medium, the outlet size and the suction condition.

What size hose fits an IBC bottom outlet?

Most IBC bottom outlets are 2 in, and they accept either a cam and groove coupling to A-A-59326 or a 2 in pipe thread to ASME B1.20.1. A 2 in line matches that outlet directly, with no reducer. Some chemical totes and smaller units use a different valve, so the outlet is measured before an assembly is ordered.

Can one IBC hose serve both a drum and a tote?

Only where the outlet size, the medium and the duty genuinely match. A drum line normally ends in a pump tube or strainer and enters through a bung, while a tote line ends in a coupling that matches the bottom valve. The bore may differ too, because a drum outlet is smaller than an IBC outlet, so one line is adapted only when the ends are chosen deliberately.

Is an IBC tote pump different from a drum pump?

The pumping element is often the same and the mounting differs. A drum unit is built to sit on a 200 L drum with a tube of about 1 m reaching the floor. An IBC tote pump is normally cart-mounted so that one operator can move it from pallet to pallet, because the container drains from a bottom valve rather than from the top.

How long should a drum pump hose be?

Long enough to reach the receiving vessel with a gentle bend, and no longer. Excess length adds product that must be drained at changeover and creates low points where liquid collects. On an IBC the run is usually shortest, because the pump stands beside the container. A longer line is justified only when the pump must sit outside a bunded area for access.

Do I need an antistatic hose for drum transfer?

It depends on the medium and the area classification. Non-conductive liquids moving through a line accumulate static charge, and a plastic drum or an IBC in a cage gives no reliable earth path by itself. Where the medium requires it, conductive or antistatic construction is used and the complete path is bonded and earthed. The chemical resistance chart and the site assessment settle the choice.

What working pressure should a small-container line have?

Small-container pumps are low-pressure machines, so the hose rating is rarely the limiting factor. The rating still has to exceed the pump discharge pressure with margin, and the assembly is selected from the published working pressure of its build. EN 12115 assemblies are rated up to 10 bar, while EN 13765 composite assemblies are rated from 4 bar to 14 bar. Suction duty is usually the binding case.

Why does my chemical drum pump lose prime when the drum is nearly empty?

Air is entering the suction path. The usual causes are a pump tube that does not reach the liquid, a loose or damaged suction joint, an unsealed bung, and a tube that is too short once the drum is nearly empty. On an IBC, an outlet valve that is only partly open has the same effect. Checking tube length and every joint before the next transfer normally locates the fault.

How do I stop drips when disconnecting an IBC hose?

Close the outlet valve first, then let the line drain into the receiving vessel. Fit a dry-break coupling or a dust cap so that the residual film stays inside, and keep a drip tray under the connection point during the transfer. A line that is drained before disconnection leaves far less on the floor.

How often should a drum pump hose be replaced?

No single interval fits every medium. Replacement is driven by the chemical service, the working temperature and how the line is handled between transfers. A pre-use check for cover damage, soft spots, bulging and coupling wear is more useful than a fixed calendar, because one build behaves differently in different media.

Final Verdict: IBC Transfer Hose and Pump Selection Checklist

Small-container transfer is decided at specification time. Get the pump family, the bore, the ends and the bonding method right once, and the daily work becomes routine.

Before the next drum or IBC job, confirm the following:

The medium, its concentration and its temperature are written down, and the chemical resistance chart has been checked against them.

The container outlet has been measured, and the assembly is ordered with the correct end rather than an adapter stack.

The pump family matches the viscosity, the flow needed and the area classification, with wetted materials confirmed part by part.

The bore is sized for flow and velocity, and suction duty is called out separately where the pump pulls from the container.

The hose build is appropriate for the medium, whether that is rubber, UHMWPE, PTFE-lined or thermoplastic composite.

Bonding, earthing and the earth point are defined, and conductive or antistatic construction is selected where the medium requires it.

Secondary containment, a drip tray and a dry-break or cap are in place at the connection point.

Whoever handles the line has done it before, or has been shown the drain and disconnect step.

HENGHUA is a professional manufacturer of chemical hoses, chemical hose assemblies, industrial hoses and hose fittings, supplying distributors, EPC contractors and OEM brands worldwide. Chemical hose construction covers rubber including EPDM and other compounds, UHMWPE, PTFE-lined and thermoplastic composite builds. Assemblies are terminated with crimped, swaged or banded hose ends, and with flanged ends to ASME or EN patterns.
