Two things are usually missed: the temperature the rating belongs to, and the pressure it carries. The headline working pressure in a datasheet is stated at a reference condition, and it falls as the wall temperature rises. The rating question is therefore never a single number: use the rated pressure, reduced for the wall temperature the service will see. A hose approved at ambient can sit outside its rating on a hot day with a hot product inside it.

Every resistance rating depends on three variables: the medium and its concentration, the wall temperature, and the exposure time. This article explains how a thermoplastic multi-layer composite hose is built, and what the EN 13765:2018 rating frame covers. It then shows how a published derating factor turns a headline pressure into a usable one, and why resistance and temperature have to be read together.

1. What a Composite Hose Is Built From

A thermoplastic composite hose is not a rubber hose with a plastic lining. It is a stack of thin thermoplastic films and woven fabric layers, wound around an inner wire helix and held together by the mechanical tension of the winding. No layer is vulcanized, so nothing in the wall is chemically cross-linked. The wall as a stack decides the chemical answer, not one extruded tube.

Typical build, from the inside out:

An inner wire helix that resists collapse under vacuum and stops the hose flattening when it is bent tight.

Inner film layers that face the medium and carry the primary chemical duty.

Woven fabric layers that carry the pressure load and stop the hose stretching.

Outer film and fabric layers that protect the reinforcement and take abrasion.

An outer helix or a coated finish that shields the wall from the ground and from handling damage.

Because the layers are separate, the medium meets the innermost film first. If that film swells or softens, the fabric behind it is exposed and the pressure capability of the wall drops. A composite hose chemical resistance answer is therefore a statement about a wall build, a medium and a temperature, not about a single material.

The chemical hose range on this site is built on the same logic. In HENGHUA’s own composite build, the film that meets the medium is selected for that medium and its concentration, and the fabric layers behind it are selected for the pressure and the flexing the duty demands.

Why that differs from a rubber hose

In a rubber hose the tube is a vulcanized compound, and the reinforcement sits over it. The tube is one continuous barrier. In a thermoplastic composite the barrier is a set of films that are bonded and compressed, and each layer can be selected on its own. You can put a solvent-resistant film against the medium and a different film behind it. That is why a thermoplastic composite hose can be tuned to a medium without changing the whole build.

Table 1. Layer stack in a thermoplastic multi-layer composite hose, from the inside out: inner wire helix, inner film layers, woven fabric layers, outer film and fabric layers, and an outer helix or coated finish.

Because the films are thin and are held only by winding tension, edge damage matters more than it does on a rubber hose. A cut that reaches the reinforcement opens a path for the medium to travel sideways between layers. Inspect the cover end to end, not only at the fittings.

2. What Composite Hose Chemical Resistance Data Actually Measures

A published composite hose chemical resistance rating is a screening result, not a service guarantee. It means something only together with the concentration, the temperature and the exposure time it was measured at. Change any one of those three and the rating no longer describes your transfer.

What a chart can and cannot tell you

A chart cell compresses three separate questions into one answer. It does not tell you how much the film swells, how its hardness moves, or how tensile strength and elongation change. Immersion testing to ASTM D471 for rubber and ASTM D543 for plastics reports exactly those quantities. A chart does not report them.

Table 2. Screening rating compared with immersion test output

Question

Resistance chart

Immersion test, ASTM D471 or D543

Will the medium attack the wall?

Broad rating at a stated temperature

Reported per material, medium and condition

How much does the material swell?

Not normally stated

Volume swell, reported

Does it soften or harden?

Not normally stated

Hardness change, reported

Does it lose strength?

Not normally stated

Tensile and elongation change, reported

Which temperature applies?

The test temperature only

The test temperature, stated as a condition

A rating is only valid with its conditions:

Concentration, because a dilute acid and a concentrated one are not the same service.

Temperature, because a material that holds at the reference temperature can fall outside its rating when hot.

Exposure time, because a splash is not the same as continuous immersion.

That is the practical difference between a chart and a test. A chart is a shortlist, and the test report is the evidence. When a supplier quotes a resistance figure, ask which of the three conditions it was measured at, and write that condition into the purchase specification. A 250 psi chemical suction and discharge hose is rated for the duty the test described, and for nothing wider than that.

3. The EN 13765:2018 Rating Frame for a Thermoplastic Composite Hose

EN 13765:2018 covers thermoplastic multi-layer, non-vulcanized composite hose for hydrocarbons, solvents and chemicals. It defines four types, numbered Type 1 to Type 4. It sets bores from 25 mm to 300 mm, working pressures from 4 bar to 14 bar, and working temperatures from −30 °C to +150 °C. This article applies the 2018 edition; check for a later edition before you write the specification.

Table 3. Two hoses can both be listed at 10 bar and still behave differently at 120 °C. A composite hose pressure rating quoted without its reference condition is an incomplete figure. A headline pressure applied at the top of the temperature range is a mistake. The pressure figure itself is proven on the assembly by hydrostatic and burst testing to ISO 1402; repeated flexing under pressure is covered by impulse testing to ISO 6803.

Convert with care when a US specification meets a metric datasheet. At 1 bar equal to 14.50 psi, 4 bar is about 58 psi and 14 bar is about 203 psi (calculated). At 1 in equal to 25.4 mm, 25 mm is about 0.98 in and 300 mm is about 11.81 in (calculated). HENGHUA’s own published ID program covers 3 mm to 102 mm, which runs from about 1/8 in to 4 in, and the site-wide design safety factor is 4:1. Keep the composite hose chemical resistance data and the pressure figure on the same line of the specification.

4. Derating: How a Hose Derating Factor Works

A hose derating factor is a multiplier published by the hose maker and applied to the rated working pressure to give the pressure you may use at a stated temperature. The arithmetic is one multiplication: derated working pressure equals rated working pressure times derating factor, and the result is labeled calculated. The judgment is in which factor to take, and at which temperature.

Why the wall temperature is the number that counts

The wall can run hotter than the air around it for three reasons:

The product itself may arrive hot, and a warm wall can sit at that temperature for the whole transfer.

A hose lying in direct sun heats above shaded ambient air, and a dark cover heats more.

A cleaning cycle, steam-out or hot wash can put the wall far above its normal service temperature.

Take the highest of those three, find the maker’s factor for that band, and apply it. If you use the shaded air temperature instead, you overstate the pressure the hose can hold. That is the most common derating error at a dock or on a tank truck, where the product is hot and the hose lies in the open.

How do I work out the pressure for a hot wall?

Build the table from the maker’s published hose derating factor values, not from a curve you sketch yourself. Take the maker’s factor for each temperature band, multiply it by the rated pressure, and label the result calculated. A worked example shows the arithmetic. The example factors below are placeholders that demonstrate the multiplication and nothing else.

Table 4. Worked example at a 10 bar rated pressure: each derated value is the rated pressure multiplied by an example factor, and each psi value is the bar value times 14.50 rounded to the nearest whole psi (illustrative arithmetic only; the real factors are published by the hose maker)

Wall temperature

Example factor, assumed

Derated working pressure, calculated

Derated pressure, psi, calculated

−30 °C to +40 °C

1.00

10.0 bar

145 psi

+60 °C

0.90

9.0 bar

131 psi

+80 °C

0.80

8.0 bar

116 psi

+100 °C

0.65

6.5 bar

94 psi

+120 °C

0.50

5.0 bar

73 psi

+150 °C

0.33

3.3 bar

48 psi

Every derated value in Table 4 is simple multiplication of the rated pressure by the example factor, and the factors are placeholders, not data. Replace them with the factors your hose maker publishes, and keep the label calculated so nobody mistakes the result for a tested figure. Use 1.00 as the ceiling: a derated pressure never rises above the rated pressure. Take the factor from a published band, and interpolate only when the maker states the curve is linear between bands, because the fall in pressure is steeper at the top of the range.

Read the derated figure against a real number. HENGHUA publishes a 4:1 design safety factor across its range, so a hose with a 10 bar rated working pressure implies a nominal 40 bar burst figure (calculated). That margin belongs to a new hose at the reference condition. It is not a license to run a hot wall at rated pressure, and it is not a substitute for the derating factor.

A tank truck hose guide covers derating from the vehicle side, where one shift can give the wall an ambient product at the outlet and a hot one at the inlet. Hold the composite hose temperature rating in view while you derate, because the two are read from the same axis.

5. Composite Hose Chemical Resistance and Temperature, Read Together

Two effects act on a hot wall at the same time: the film softens and its mechanical strength drops, and the medium becomes more aggressive as it warms. That is why a hose approved on a room-temperature chart can still be the wrong hose for a hot duty. Resistance data and the derating factor are never read on their own, and the lower of the two decides the duty.

I have the resistance data and the derating factor: in what order do I read them?

Fix the order so that neither data set is read alone:

First, fix the highest wall temperature the service will see.

Second, find the resistance rating for the medium at that temperature and concentration.

Third, take the maker’s derating factor for the same temperature.

Fourth, check that rated pressure times factor still covers the duty.

If either the resistance check or the derating check fails, the hose is not suitable, even when the other one passes. A screen that passes on resistance but fails on derating is still a failure, and the reverse is equally true. The oil hose range shows the point. A hydrocarbon duty that looks easy at ambient can need a different wall build once the product is hot.

Figure 2. Temperature-Critical Failure Modes to Inspect For

Heat rarely fails a composite hose in one event. It softens the wall first, and pressure, bending and flexing then finish the job. The signs are usually visible before a leak, if you check the cover, the wall under pressure and the couplings.

A temperature-damaged wall usually shows some of these:

A cover that has hardened, crazed or cracked along the run that gets hottest.

Blisters or raised areas where a film layer has separated from the layer behind it.

A kink that no longer springs back after the hose is straightened.

Soft spots that stay soft while the line is at pressure, not only at rest.

Discoloration or a sharp smell around the couplings after a hot transfer.

Corrosion on the inner helix where the wall has let moisture or medium reach it.

Coupling leakage that appears only when the product is hot.

Figure 3. Cover inspection on a composite hose after a hot transfer: a faint crack and a raised blister, with the coupling at the edge of the frame.

Inspect a hot hose cold where you can. A warm wall is softer and more flexible than it will be in storage, so a soft spot is easier to confirm after the line has cooled. For a nonmetallic transfer hose, 33 CFR 156.170(c)(1) states the inspection rule: the hose must show no unrepaired loose covers, kinks, bulges or soft spots, no gouges or cuts penetrating the first reinforcement layer, and no external deterioration. Under a static liquid pressure of at least 1.5 times the maximum allowable working pressure, it must not burst, bulge, leak or abnormally distort.

A composite hose chemical resistance rating covers chemistry only. Mechanical damage is a separate check: a hose that passes on chemistry can still fail on a cut cover. A petroleum transfer and bulk loading drop hose guide shows how the same inspection discipline is applied at a loading rack, where the hose is dragged and the cover takes the punishment. Cover abrasion has its own test, ISO 6945, run on a new sample; a hose already in service is judged by inspection.

7. Specification Checklist for a Transfer, Loading or Dock Application

Write the temperature into the specification before you write the pressure. Most over-specification and most field failures start with a pressure number copied from a datasheet and a temperature left blank. It should state the derating factor it applied, the temperature that factor belongs to, and the reference condition behind the headline composite hose pressure rating. It should also give the resistance rating for your medium at your concentration and temperature, the assembly test pressure, and the marking the hose will carry.

Table 5. For an application review, contact HENGHUA with the medium, the concentration, the wall temperature and the required working pressure, and the answer will be checked against both the resistance data and the derating table.

FAQ

Does a composite hose chemical resistance table replace a test?

No. A composite hose chemical resistance table is a screening aid, while an immersion test to ASTM D471 or ASTM D543 reports volume swell, hardness change and tensile or elongation change under stated conditions. The table shortlists a wall build, and the test is the evidence behind it. Use the table to narrow the choice, then confirm the duty with the test data or with the maker’s service recommendation for that medium.

What temperature range does a thermoplastic composite hose cover?

EN 13765:2018 sets working temperatures from −30 °C to +150 °C for thermoplastic multi-layer non-vulcanized composite hose, with bores of 25 mm to 300 mm and working pressures of 4 bar to 14 bar. That is the outer envelope of the standard. The pressure you may use at the hot end is lower than the headline figure, which is why derating applies inside the range.

How does a hose derating factor work?

Take the maker’s published factor for the temperature band that covers your highest wall temperature, multiply the rated working pressure by it, and label the result calculated. The hose derating factor is an interpolation rule as much as a number: use the factor for the band that covers your service, and treat a factor above 1.00 as unavailable. If the maker publishes no factor for your band, ask before you approve the duty.

Does the composite hose pressure rating change with temperature?

Yes. A composite hose pressure rating applies at the reference condition it was measured at, not anywhere else in the temperature range. A hose listed at 10 bar can hold far less at 150 °C, and the derating factor is how you find the figure for your duty. Quote the temperature next to the pressure on every line of the specification, and keep the derated number, labeled calculated, beside the headline figure it came from.

What is the composite hose temperature rating based on?

The composite hose temperature rating is set by the wall build, not by one material. Every film and fabric layer in the wall has its own limit, and the hose takes the lowest of them. That is why the innermost film, the fabric that carries the pressure and the outer cover all have to clear the temperature the service will see, not just the inside face of the hose.

Are composite hoses suitable for solvents and hydrocarbons?

Yes. EN 13765:2018 covers composite hose for hydrocarbon, solvent and chemical service. Suitability still depends on the medium, its concentration and the wall temperature. A hose that handles one solvent well may not handle another, so check the resistance data for the exact medium and keep the temperature in view at the same time.

Why is the headline pressure not valid at every temperature?

The headline pressure is quoted at a reference condition, not across the whole working temperature range. As the wall heats, the film layers soften and the fabric reinforcement carries a greater share of the load, so the safe working pressure drops. The standard sets the envelope, and the maker’s derating factor sets what is actually available at your temperature.

My hose lies in the sun and the product arrives hot: which temperature do I derate to?

Use the highest temperature the wall will actually see. That is usually the hottest of three values: the product temperature, the wall temperature of a hose lying in direct sun, and the peak of any cleaning cycle. Take the highest of them rather than the air temperature, and apply the derating factor for that band.

How do I build a derating table for my transfer?

Ask the hose maker for its published derating factors by temperature band. Multiply each factor by the rated working pressure, put the results in a column labeled calculated, and convert to psi if your specification uses US units. Keep the maker’s factor, the temperature band and the rated pressure together, so the table can be checked later by anyone.

I have just finished a hot transfer: what should I check on the hose?

Work through four zones. On the cover, look for hardening, crazing or cracking. On the wall under pressure, look for blisters, a kink that will not spring back, and soft spots that are still soft with the line under pressure. At the couplings, look for discoloration, a sharp smell, or coupling leaks that show up only with a hot product. On the inner helix, look for corrosion. Inspect the hose cold where the layout allows, because a softened wall can mask a soft spot.

About HENGHUA

HENGHUA is a hose manufacturer supplying distributors, chemical plant operators, EPC contractors, tank-terminal operators and OEM programs.
