A chemical hose carrying its identification band at the coupling.

Short Answer: What EN 12115 Covers

The standard applies to hose assemblies made of rubber or thermoplastic material with metal end fittings, used to convey chemicals in liquid or gaseous form. It sets a default temperature range of −20 °C to +65 °C at a working pressure of 10 bar or less. Where the duty falls outside that envelope, the standard allows the manufacturer and user to agree different figures, provided the hose label states them.

The standard is about the assembly, not only the hose: fittings are part of the requirement, and a compliant hose with non-compliant fittings is not a compliant assembly. The default envelope is modest, so most hot or high-pressure duties sit in the agreed-extension case rather than inside the base scope. Chemical selection is not decided by the standard itself.

Scope: Two Types and Four Electrical Grades

The classification clause divides hose assemblies in two ways, and both divisions appear on the product label.

By duty, there are two types. Type D is for delivery duty only. Type SD is for suction and delivery duty, which means it must also resist the collapse load of a vacuum. The practical difference is construction: a Type D hose consists of a lining, a reinforcement and a cover, while a Type SD hose adds one or more helixes. The helix or helixes must be fully embedded in the wall so that the medium never contacts them.

By electrical properties, there are four grades. Grade M is electrically bonded. Grade Ω is electrically conductive. Grade M/T and Grade Ω/T keep the same lining properties as M and Ω respectively and add a requirement that the resistance through the hose wall does not exceed 10⁹ Ω. The lining resistance associated with the conductive grade is of the order of 10⁶ Ω, and the measurement method is the one defined for electrical resistance and conductivity testing. The differences between the types and grades are worth understanding before a hazardous area classification is applied to a line.

What EN 12115 Does Not Cover

Knowing the exclusions prevents the most common misuse of the standard. The scope lists a set of duties handled by other specifications.

Aircraft refuelling and fuel dispensing

Oil burners and refrigerant circuits

Fuel truck delivery and liquefied petroleum gas

Fire fighting and oil suction and discharge

Rotary drilling and vapour recovery systems

Anhydrous ammonia is also excluded.

The most important exclusion for chemical plant work is multilayer hose assemblies. EN 12115 does not apply to them; they fall under the EN 13765 and EN 13766 family instead. A composite hose with a film lining and wire helixes is therefore a different product category, and a quotation that cites EN 12115 for a composite hose has cited the wrong standard.

The standard also does not decide whether a lining suits a particular chemical. Annex F provides a list of lining materials against chemical substances identified by CAS number, and it is informative rather than normative. It is the supplier’s chemical resistance data, not the annex, that settles a real selection.

The Clause Map: Where to Find Each Requirement

The standard is organised so that design, test and identification requirements sit in separate clauses. Its terms follow the hose vocabulary standard EN ISO 8330. Table 1 maps the structure.

Table 1. The route through the standard, from scope to storage.

Materials and Construction Requirements

Construction requirements are deliberately prescriptive about the layers, even though the standard does not name specific polymers or a preferred liner material for a given chemical. The lining must be resistant to the chemicals conveyed, uniform in quality and thickness, and free from porosity, air holes and foreign inclusions that could impair service.

The cover has a different job. It must resist mechanical damage, wear, and the effects of weather and short-term chemical exposure, which is why a cover is judged on its own rather than on the chemistry of the product line. A cover that hardens in sunlight and cracks is failing the requirement even if it never touches the medium.

The reinforcement must be a textile material resistant to the medium conveyed. Some designs add steel wire helixes, and where they are used the requirement is that they are fully embedded so that contact with the product is avoided. Burying the helix matters for two reasons: an exposed wire becomes a corrosion site inside the hose, and it creates a path for static charge that the electrical classification may not have allowed for.

End fittings are part of the assembly requirement rather than an accessory. The lining material selection is the buyer’s responsibility and cannot be delegated to the standard, which is why a specification that names only the standard is incomplete.

Dimensions, Vacuum Stability and Bend Radius

The dimensional clauses set inside and outside diameters, minimum lining and cover thicknesses and minimum bend radius, with separate tables for the two types. They also define a vacuum stability requirement, which is the pressure at which the hose must resist collapse without an excessive change in diameter or length.

Vacuum stability is one of the differences between the types in practice. A Type D hose still has to withstand an internal vacuum to the value given in its table without collapsing or changing dimension beyond the permitted tolerance. A Type SD hose carries helixes specifically so that suction duty is repeatable over a long service life.

The dimensional clauses also support the pressure case, because lining and cover thicknesses set how much working pressure the wall can carry. Bend radius is a dimension with a safety consequence. Bending past the minimum creases the lining and, on an SD hose, folds the helix, and neither recovers. The radius is measured to the hose centreline, so the requirement applies to the inner side of the bend, which is where the crease appears first.

Performance Requirements and Test Methods

The standard relies on published test methods from the rubber and plastics hose family rather than defining its own. Table 2 lists the requirements a buyer will usually be asked to evidence, with the method behind each.

Table 2. Performance requirements and test methods referenced by EN 12115

Requirement

Test Method

Why It Matters

Hydrostatic behaviour

EN ISO 1402

Confirms the assembly holds proof and burst pressure

Dimensions

EN ISO 4671

Verifies diameter, thickness and assembly length

Resistance to vacuum

EN ISO 7233

Confirms the hose does not collapse on suction duty

Ozone resistance

EN ISO 7326

Guards against surface cracking in outdoor service

Electrical resistance

EN ISO 8031

Verifies the declared grade rather than assuming it

Adhesion between components

EN ISO 8033

Prevents layer separation under flexing and pressure

Flexibility and stiffness

EN ISO 10619

Sets the practical bend behaviour at ambient and low temperature

Two annexes add tests of their own. A crush recovery test applies to SD hoses only, which reflects the fact that helixed constructions are the ones expected to recover after being run over. A flammability test also applies, and it is relevant wherever a line runs near a heat source or carries a flammable product.

Figure 3. Each performance requirement is verified by a published method.

The frequency of testing is defined separately, and the standard distinguishes type tests from routine tests. Type tests qualify a design; routine tests check production. Ask which type tests the design has passed and in which laboratory. A supplier who can only offer a routine test certificate has not evidenced the design, and that distinction matters when a project requires documentation rather than a statement.

Electrical Properties, Marking and Storage

Electrical properties and identification sit in separate clauses, but they are read together on site, because the label is where the grade becomes visible.

Electrical Properties

The four grades are defined by resistance limits rather than by construction, which means two hoses with completely different builds can carry the same grade if they both meet the limit. The measurement is made to the published method, and the result depends on where the electrodes are placed, so a figure quoted for the lining alone is not the same as a figure quoted through the wall.

That difference explains the /T suffix. A grade without the suffix describes the conductive property of the lining. The /T grades add a through-wall requirement of 10⁹ Ω or less, which means the path runs from the inside surface to the outside of the hose. For a line in a classified area, it is the through-wall figure that matters, because it is the path the charge has to take.

Marking

A compliant label must identify the manufacturer, the standard and the type, and must state the grade and any temperature or pressure agreed outside the default envelope. It also has to survive service, which is why a printed band or an adhered label at the coupling is preferred over identification that can be abraded away.

Table 3. Documents and product checks for an EN 12115 order

Item

Evidence

When It Is Needed

Conformance statement

Declaration against the standard and the type

At quotation and at delivery

Proof test record

Hydrostatic test result for the assembly

With every delivered assembly

Type tests

Design qualification reports

Once per design, on request

Compatibility data

Supplier assessment for the product stream

Before the order is placed

Electrical verification

Resistance measurement against the declared grade

For graded hose, at delivery and after repairs

Read the marking before the first transfer, and record it against the order checks in Table 3. The label is the only place where the agreed temperature and pressure extension appears, and a hose used at an agreed 16 bar is compliant only if the label says so. Where the printed information is illegible, treat the assembly as unlabelled and replace or retest it.

Storage, Service Life and Retesting

Storage conditions and admissible storage time are covered by the standard, because an aged hose may no longer meet the requirements it was tested against. The temperature range of the storage area matters as much as the time. Keep assemblies out of sunlight, away from ozone sources such as electric motors, with the ends capped and the coils supported rather than stacked.

Service life is not a fixed figure in the standard. It follows from the duty, the product and the inspection regime, which is why a written procedure matters more than a shelf-life number. Set an interval, inspect against it, and retire on damage rather than on appearance.

The proof test at delivery is the baseline, and a stored assembly is retested after its admissible storage time has passed.

Replace the assembly on a stop-use condition: a lining that is creased or blistered, a cover cracked through to the reinforcement, a braid that is broken, or a measured through-wall resistance outside the declared grade. A chemical hose assembly is replaced, never repaired in the field: an on-site repair leaves no valid proof test record.

Chemical Resistance: How Annex F Is Used

Annex F is the part of the standard that users reach for first. It is an informative list of liner material options assessed against specific chemical substances, identified by CAS number, and it is provided for information rather than as a requirement.

Two things follow. First, a material appearing on the list against a substance is not a guarantee for your duty, because concentration, temperature and the presence of other components all change the answer. Second, the list is organised by substance rather than by product family. A trade name such as a dilute acid or a branded solvent has to be resolved to the actual chemical before it is looked up.

Use the annex to shortlist between two candidate liner material options, then confirm the choice with the supplier against the full composition and the real temperature. Where the stream is a mixture, describe every component rather than the main one. The supplier’s compatibility work for hydrochloric acid is a worked example of how a single medium can move the material decision.

EN 12115 FAQs

Does EN 12115 apply to a composite hose?

No. Multilayer hose assemblies are explicitly outside its scope, and they are covered by the EN 13765 and EN 13766 family. This is the single most common citation error in chemical hose specifications, because a composite hose and a rubber or thermoplastic chemical hose can look similar in a quotation and behave quite differently under test.

What is the difference between Type D and Type SD?

Type D is for delivery duty only. Type SD is for suction and delivery duty and therefore includes one or more helixes embedded in the wall. A delivery-only line can use Type D, and a line that must resist vacuum or recover after being crushed needs Type SD. The choice is driven by the duty, not by the bore or the pressure.

What do the four electrical grades mean?

Grade M is electrically bonded and Grade Ω is electrically conductive. Grade M/T and Grade Ω/T keep those lining properties and add a requirement that resistance through the hose wall does not exceed 10⁹ Ω. The correct grade follows from the area classification and the product, not from preference, and the declared grade has to be verified by measurement.

Does the standard fix the working pressure?

Only within the default envelope. The base requirement covers a working pressure of 10 bar or less inside the default temperature range of −20 °C to +65 °C. Duties above those values can be agreed with the manufacturer, provided the label states the agreed figures. That label is what makes the extension valid, so an assembly without it is not covered.

Why does the labelled information matter so much?

Because the label carries the type, the grade and any agreed extension of the temperature range or pressure. It is the only place where the actual conditions of use are recorded on the product itself. A hose whose marking has been abraded away has lost the evidence of its own specification, and that is a stop-use condition for a documented installation.

How is the standard different from a chemical resistance table?

The standard defines construction, dimensional, performance and electrical requirements and the methods used to verify them. It does not decide whether a liner material suits a particular chemical. That decision comes from the supplier chemical resistance data, with Annex F as a shortlisting aid rather than an answer.

What should a purchase specification quote?

Quote the standard, the type, the grade, the bore and length, the end fittings, the agreed temperature and pressure if they fall outside the default envelope, and the qualification reports and other documentation you require. Name the product and its concentration separately, because the standard does not cover it. A supplier can then respond to a complete requirement rather than to a generic one, and the response will not change when a bulk order is placed.

Source EN 12115 Hose Against a Written Specification

The standard only delivers value when the specification names the type, the grade and the agreed envelope, and when the label on the delivered hose matches what was ordered. Confirm first whether the duty is delivery only or suction and delivery, because that single answer selects the construction. Check each of these at goods-in, and check them again before a bulk order is accepted.

Type — D for delivery only, SD where suction duty is also needed.

Grade — M, Ω, M/T or Ω/T, matching the area classification.

Label — manufacturer, standard, type, grade and any agreed temperature or pressure.

Documentation — the proof test record and the qualification reports for the design.

Length and bore — measured, not assumed, because a short assembly kinks at the coupling.

End fittings — the mating standard at each end, recorded with the assembly identity.

Condition — braid intact, cover sound, no crease in the lining.

Final verdict: two answers drive the specification. Those two are the duty (delivery only, or suction as well) and the grade that the area classification requires.
