1. What a 5B9 Adapter Does
A 5B9 adapter is a 90° elbow hydraulic adapter with a BSP male 60° cone seat stud end at port E and a BSP female end made to ISO 1179 at port F. It turns the connection through a right angle and converts between the port side and the line side of the circuit.

2.1 Connection 1 – BSP male, 60° cone seat (port E)
Port E is a BSPP male stud end with a 60° cone seat, offered from G1/8″x28 to G1.1/4″x11. It screws into a BSPP port with a 60° cone, or into a flat-face port where a bonded seal washer is used.
The cone joint is metal to metal at the seat, so it needs no separate sealing element at this end and releases cleanly for service.
2.2 Connection 2 – BSP female, ISO 1179 (port F)
Port F is a BSPP female end dimensioned to ISO 1179, from G1/8″x28 to G1.1/4″x11. ISO 1179 covers ports and stud ends with ISO 228-1 threads in the BSPP family, including the 60° cone seat configuration, which is why a stud end produced to that standard makes up correctly in this port.
The female body is the longer of the two legs on this series, and the B dimension in the chart below gives that leg as drawn, so the elbow clears the mating stud end before it seats. Every part number in the 5B9 chart is a same-size elbow, carrying one thread size at both ends.

3. How to Read a 5B9 Part Number
A 5B9 part number has two elements: the series prefix and the size code.
- 5 – the BSP male to BSP female ISO 1179 family in the British Adapters range.
- B – BSP thread, here BSPP to ISO 228-1.
- 9 – the 90° elbow version. The 5B family is also supplied as a straight adapter, series 5B.
- Size code – two digits giving the nominal thread size in sixteenths of an inch: 02 is 1/8, 04 is 1/4, 06 is 3/8, 08 is 1/2, 12 is 3/4, 16 is 1, 20 is 1.1/4.
Worked example: 5B9-08. Port E is a G1/2″x14 male 60° seat end and port F is a G1/2″x14 female end to ISO 1179. From the chart, A is 39 mm, B is 31 mm and S1 is 30 mm. The longer B leg is the female ISO 1179 end, which is the dimension to check when the elbow has to clear a component beside the port.
A 5B9 adapter has a single size code, so it is not ordered as a reduced combination. If the two ports differ in size, use a straight adapter with an elbow in the line, or send the requirement to HENGHUA as a special.
4. Installation and Fitment
Port E is a cone seat joint and port F receives a cone seat stud end to ISO 1179. In both cases the thread provides clamping force and the cone carries the seal, so start each joint by hand, confirm that it turns smoothly, then tighten with a wrench until the cone seats.
- Do not use thread sealant or tape on either end, because both joints seal on a cone and not on the thread flanks.
- Where the male end is used on a flat-face port, fit a new bonded seal washer and tighten until the washer is compressed and the metal faces meet.
- Make up the male end first, set the elbow direction, then connect the female end so the hose is not twisted.
- Keep the internal cone of port F and the seat at port E clean and free of swarf, paint or old sealant.

This elbow may be reused if both cones, the threads and the hex are undamaged. Replace bonded seals and O-rings at every reassembly, and check the cone for an unbroken contact ring.

5.1 Why an elbow instead of a straight adapter
A 90° elbow changes the direction of the connection at the port, which is the reason to choose it over a straight adapter in four recurring situations.
Routing in a tight envelope: on a manifold, pump or valve block, the space directly in front of a port is often occupied by another component. The elbow turns the line away immediately, so the hose or tube leaves parallel to the machine surface instead of projecting into the free space.
Protecting the hose bend: a hose that leaves a port on the port axis and then has to bend sharply behind the machine is bent at a radius smaller than its design allows. The elbow moves that direction change into the steel body.
Respecting the minimum bend radius: every hose has a minimum bend radius below which the reinforcement is stressed and service life falls. Fitting an elbow at the port lets the hose run at a radius it was designed for, which matters most on the larger sizes in this range where the hose itself is stiffer.

Fluid-dynamic trade-off: a 90° elbow adds a local pressure loss that a straight adapter does not have, because the flow must turn and the turn creates turbulence and a small pressure drop. Keep the elbow bore matched to the hose and tube bore, avoid stacking several 90° elbows in one short run, and use a swept body where the circuit is sensitive to pressure loss.
