1. What a 9J Adapter Does
A 9J adapter is a hydraulic plug adapter with a female 74° seat: it is turned onto the external thread of a JIC 74° cone stud end, travels down the stud, and lands its internal cone on the external cone of that stud. Once made up, the stud is closed and the line behind it is dead-ended.
This is the plug that caps a male cone end. It is not the plug that blanks a female seat port: a female seat port is closed by a male cone plug of the 4J type, which seals on the same 74° seat from the opposite direction. Reading the two together makes selection simple, because the question is always which way the cone faces on the part already on the machine.
Typical uses are closing an unused manifold outlet that is fitted with a stud, capping the end of a branch that is not yet required, protecting a stud thread during transport, and closing one leg of a circuit during a pressure test without removing the stud.
Because the plug carries a seat rather than a bore, plain SAE adapter plugs of this type have no flow path and no pressure drop to consider. 2. 9J Specifications
2.1 Connection 1 – JIC female 74° seat (E)
- Thread standard and family: SAE J514, JIC 74° cone seat family, straight inch thread.

- Gender: female, an internal thread in a hex body with a closed end.

- Mating part standard: SAE J514 JIC 74° cone male stud end of the same dash size, for example a 1J straight stud, a 6J bulkhead body or an AJ tee end.
2.2 Connection 2 – closed end (no outlet)
- Thread standard and family: none. The second end is a solid closed head.
- Size range available: the closed head follows the same eleven sizes as connection 1, because it is formed by the same hex body.
- Gender: closed, not a port. There is no second connection, no outlet and no through bore.
- Sealing method: not applicable at this end. The body is solid and the hex is used to hold the plug.
- Mating port standard: not applicable. This end carries the hex S2 that turns the plug on and off the stud.
Connection 1 is the sealing side and connection 2 is the closed side, so a buyer of a JIC adapter plug specifies one thread size, from the E column of table 2.5.
2.3 Construction and Materials
This hydraulic fitting adapter is machined from bar stock on CNC lathes, with the internal cone, the internal thread and the external hex formed in one setup so that the cone stays concentric with the thread. That concentricity is what lets the cone seat evenly on the stud cone all the way round.
- Body material: carbon steel as standard; 304 stainless steel or 316 stainless steel on request; brass for selected sizes.

2.4 Pressure and Temperature
The working pressure of a 9J adapter is not set by the series code. It is governed by the thread size, the wall thickness of the stud and the plug, the sealing method and the material selected. Temperature is a material question and is stated here as a material fact. For NBR seals the working range is approximately -30°C to +100°C; for FKM (Viton-type) seals approximately -20°C to +200°C; for EPDM seals approximately -40°C to +120°C. The 74° cone joint of this series is metal-to-metal, so these figures describe the elastomer-sealed components of the same circuit rather than the plug.
Carbon steel with zinc plating suits general hydraulic adapter service. Specify 304 or 316 stainless steel where the plug is exposed to washdown, marine air or process fluid, because a pitted cone cannot be recovered.

What each column means
- PART NO. – the HENGHUA part number. The prefix
9Jmeans a JIC female 74° seat plug, followed by the dash size code. There is no second size code and no suffix in this series. - E – the internal thread of the plug, printed as diameter x threads per inch in the SAE style, for example
9/16"X18. This is the thread of the male cone stud the plug caps. - A – the seat-side length dimension marked A on the series drawing, in millimetres. It is the depth of the female seat connection, from the face of the seat end to the hex face, and it tells you how far the plug travels down the stud.
- L – the second length dimension marked L on the series drawing, in millimetres, printed at the closed end of the plug.

Read A and L together with the drawing, because they describe the two length references of the same body. Where the plug has to clear a specific envelope, the A and L pair for that size is confirmed per order by HENGHUA engineering against the series drawing.
Thread size and dash chart
The dash code follows the SAE convention of nominal tube outside diameter in sixteenths of an inch, so -06 is a 3/8″ tube size and -12 is a 3/4″ tube size. The printed thread and hex for each code are:

The hex of a given size matches the hex of the corresponding tee and the corresponding lock nut in this range, so one wrench set covers a whole station.
3. How to Read a 9J Part Number
A 9J part number has two elements: the series prefix and one dash size code. This series carries no geometry or sealing suffix, because the plug has one connection and one closed end.
The prefix 9J identifies the family: a JIC female 74° seat plug in the SAE J514 sizes. A different prefix indicates a different part in the same range, such as the 4J male cone plug that blanks a female seat port, the 1J straight stud, the 6J bulkhead body, or the CJ and BJ tees.
The dash size code carries the thread. Worked example: 9J-08.

- The mating part is a 3/4″x16 JIC 74° cone male stud end of dash size 08, for example a 1J-08 stud or a 6J-08 bulkhead body.
A buyer ordering 9J-08 therefore receives one hex plug with the internal 3/4″x16 thread and the internal 74° seat, sized for a dash 08 stud. Because only one thread appears in the row, the size code is the complete specification of the connection.
The dash codes are shared across the JIC 74° cone family, so any hydraulic adapter part, a plug, a stud, a tee or a lock nut, of the same dash size works on studs of that size.
4. Installation and Fitment
A 74° cone joint is started by hand and then tightened to seat the cone. HENGHUA does not print a single torque figure for the series, because the correct tightening depends on the stud it caps, the cone condition, the stud material and the wall thickness behind the stud. Confirm the tightening figure with HENGHUA engineering per order, or follow the recommendation of the supplier of the stud. Bring the plug up by hand until it is snug on the cone, then tighten in stages, and never use a pipe extension or an impact tool.
Seat and cone handling: keep the internal cone of the plug and the external cone of the stud clean and free of nicks. Wipe both faces with a lint-free cloth, inspect them under good light, and throw away a plug whose internal cone has been cut or flattened, because no amount of tightening will restore it.
Thread preparation: the thread of this joint is not the sealing element, so do not wrap it with thread tape and do not use sealant as a leak cure. A light oil on the thread lets the plug run down smoothly and prevents galling on stainless studs.
Contamination control: cap the stud whenever the plug is off, and keep the plug in its packaging until the moment of fitting. Debris on the cone is pressed into the seat on the first tightening and leaves a weep that returns.
Alignment: start the plug square to the stud by hand. A plug started at an angle crosses the thread and, worse, drags the seat across the cone and scores it.
Reuse and protection: a plain plug of this type can be reused while the internal cone and thread are undamaged. Where it is also used as a shipping cap, replace it after transit and inspect the stud cone before the line is pressurised.
Common fitment errors and their symptoms:
- Fitting a 9J adapter onto a female seat port. Symptom: the plug bottoms early or spins without contact, because both parts carry seats rather than a stud.
- Fitting the wrong dash size. Symptom: the plug will not start by hand, or it starts and then bottoms without touching the cone.
- Overtightening to stop a seep. Symptom: a deformed internal cone and a leak that returns immediately.
- Leaving the plug loose after a test. Symptom: the plug backs off under vibration and the stud weeps at first pressure.
Six-step assembly
- Confirm the part number against the line list and check that the thread matches the stud to be capped.
- Inspect the internal cone of the plug and the external cone of the stud for nicks, corrosion and previous overtightening marks.
- Clean both cones and both threads with a lint-free cloth and a compatible cleaning fluid.
- Start the plug on the stud by hand and run it down until it is snug on the cone.
- Tighten in stages to the recommended figure, holding the stud steady, without an extension bar.
- Pressurise the circuit, check the capped end for weeping, and re-check the tightness after the first thermal cycle.
5. Applications and Industries

Cross-reference for this hydraulic fitting adapter series is organised by standard and sealing method, never by brand. Two hydraulic fittings interchange only if the standard, the thread size, the seat angle and the seal type all match.
The 9J series is an SAE adapter plug with an internal 74° seat, made to SAE J514 and arranged to cap a male 74° cone stud end. It is not interchangeable with the 4J male cone plug, which carries an external 74° cone and closes a female seat port: the two are mirror images, and each one fits only the port it was made for. - Seat angle and direction. Confirm that the part in hand carries an internal 74° seat and that the stud in front of you carries an external 74° cone. A 74° cone is wide and shallow; a 37° flare is narrow and steeper, and the two will not mate.
- Seal type. Confirm that the joint seals metal-to-metal on the cone faces and that there is no O-ring or flat face groove in the sealing path. A part with a captive O-ring or a flat face groove belongs to a different family.

8. FAQ
What is the difference between JIC 37° flare and ORFS, and which should I use?
A JIC 37° flare joint seals metal-to-metal on a 37° conical flare face under SAE J514. An ORFS joint seals a flat face against an elastomeric O-ring under SAE J1453. The 9J series is on neither of those two, because it seals on a 74° cone seat inside the SAE J514 JIC family. Choose the family that matches the part already on the equipment, then order the plug made for that seat.
Can NPT and BSPT be interchanged?
No. NPT is a 60° taper pipe thread under ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 and BSPT is a 55° taper pipe thread under ISO 7-1, so the thread form, the angle and the pitch differ and the two will not seal even where a size starts by hand. A JIC 74° cone thread is a straight inch thread and does not interchange with either. If the stud in front of you is a pipe thread, order a plug from the pipe thread family instead of running this plug onto it.
How do I identify the correct 9J adapter size?
Measure the outside diameter and the pitch of the stud thread, then read across the E column of table 2.5 for that thread. There is no elastomer in this plug, so no seal material is needed for the 9J adapter itself.
